It's par for the course with today's corruption in the Vatican.

Impossible, unreal...
Nah, that cant be it seeing how our current pontif got elected by the conclave first and foremost to deal with corruption and scandals FIVE years ago already !

I dont trust the vatican, I mean its a distrust on such a fundamental level that I really doubt if pope Benedict is even alive anymore...

Says alot imo.

Like, you think they’re staging an elaborate Weekend At Bernie’s style hoax?

Huh. I’m pretty sure he’s very much alive. Do you know how many people would by nature have to be in on a conspiracy so immense?

Digitally manipulating this photo was a foolish move and whoever was responsible for it should be sacked immediately. People have enough trouble trusting the Catholic Church, there’s no reason to give them information that confirms their biases.

So am I of course, but to have such a distrust in the churchs officials says something about some of the upper-clergy. At least I see it as a huge issue.
Much is wierd about the Papa Emeritus and the pope Fransisco situation so who knows whats what anyway.

This wont improve until theres been a new conclave.

I think we all know what’s what. We know that Pope Benedict is not such a coward that he would cooperate with a coup. Judging by the way he’s lived his life, this man would surely die before dishonoring Christ’s Church so. We know from their statements that Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus have been and remain on good terms and have we have no reason to speculate otherwise. And we know, of course, that Pope Benedict has noted the internal continuity of the two Pontificates. To believe that there is not such continuity is to say some rather uncharitable things about Pope Benedict or to subscribe to a conspiracy theory so immense as to be laughable.

I just dont fully trust that everything supposedly said or written by the pontiff actually has been said or written by him (as was proven in this very article).
Some of his Francis praise in the past was equally strange.

Misquoted perhaps or worse...

What does this article say he said that he didn't?

Occam's Razor. What he said was most likely his sincere thoughts on the matter. It is possible that there is a grand conspiracy afoot, and if one hunted for evidence to back up such a belief they'd find it the same as flat-Earthers and Halocaust deniers do.

I tend to be a person who leans toward the fact that a conspiracy requires to many moving parts and to many people to stay quit. It is however sad that it is not surprising that more scandal is coming out of the Vatican.

OK. So a massive conspiracy is silly. Conspiracy of even a minor sort is silly too.

The note from Benedict was manipulated to cover up a very critical detail in the story. That critical originally hidden detail is that Benedict endorsed the Francis booklets after at best skimming them.

Somehow someone in the Vatican Press Office wanted that particular factoid kept invisible. I think that was because the note from Benedict has already been weaponized by 'friends of Francis'. Fr. Martin has made a HUGE deal of it for example.

What's odd is what the note actually said versus the use that was made of it. I interpret it as a polite note saying that Benedict isn't going to have a 'pithy blurb' about the eleven booklets because he didn't spend the time or effort to read them. But it is being used as a cudgel against anyone who ever questioned pope Francis.

So here is what Benedict wrote, in a translation by Fr. Zuhlsdorf:
I thank you for your courteous letter of January 12 and for the attached gift of the eleven small volumes edited by Roberto Repole.

I applaud this initiative which is intended to oppose and react to the foolish prejudice according to which Pope Francis would be only a practical man devoid of particular theological or philosophical formation, while I would be solely a theoretician of theology who could understand little of the concrete life of a Christian today.

The little volumes demonstrate, rightly so, that Pope Francis is a man of profound philosophical and theological formation, and they therefore help in seeing the interior continuity between the two pontificates, albeit with all the differences of style and temperament.

Nonetheless, I do not feel that I can write a brief and dense theological page about them because for my whole life it has always been clear that I would write and express myself only on books that I had also truly read. Unfortunately, even if only for physical reasons, I am not able to read the eleven little volumes in the near future, all the more so in that I am under other obligations to which I have already agreed.

I am sure that you will understand, and I extend to you my cordial greeting.

What's odd is that I have never heard anyone contrasting an unformed Francis with an out of touch theoretician Benedict. Francis, as a Jesuit, is nothing if not 'formed'. The juxtaposition seems artificial. I don't know. I have trouble making any literal sense of it. It doesn't seem to actually work as a polemical item although it is being used that way.

Its absurd to think this is the doing of just one person at the vatican two or more people conspiring to hide the truth from others is a conspiracy

In general What is happening in the vatican and this pontificate. Some will be in on it others wont be some will be aware and go along with it others wont some will speak out and others remain silent out of fear of reprisells.

How much pope benedict knows and goes along with is hard to say when you have become a cloisterd monk...a nice term for saying he has been put in "prison" information in and out of the prison is controlled as proofed with this story by the prison masters

What i will say is prophecy on the subject seems to suggest there is much more to happen between now and pope benedicts death and he is 90 now so within the next 10yrs but others suggest he will die quickly in exile and that most of the chastisments will come after his death so who knows either way are in for quite a rollercoaster ride

I'm thinking pope Benedict is not a prisoner but has chosen to spend a life of quiet prayer and reflection, cutting himself off from the hubbub, doing so if his own volition. I hope he is working on one final grand book, but we shall see. He is becoming more frail and in that sense his body may be a bit of a prison, but as to him being gagged, I just don't think so.
