Stephen Hawking dies aged 76
He died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday, his family said.

The Briton was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

At the age of 22 Prof Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease.

well, if it is correct that he was an atheist it will now be an interesting time for his soul. The question of where to spend eternity.
Lots to admire about the man, achieved great things but he was just a man. All equal in death. If he truly rejected God then he has chosen to go elsewhere. God grants our wish to choose.

There is a time for everything...this is not the time. It was worth arguing as to his deficits in metaphysical pronouncements and it will be in the future however, a little respect in the present should be in order. Now is simply a time to at least give credit to the man for his advancement of science, accomplishments, and overcoming his disabilities.

Respect for what? If you're a Christian, you believe that after death the soul immediately goes before God for the judgement. Or if you adhere to the soul sleep doctrine, you think that Hawking is currently asleep just like everyone else until Christ returns.

What's this respect Christians request for a certain period of time after someone dies? Does God wait a few months to show respect before He judges their souls? To be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. I don't think respect is the feeling we should show towards the recently deceased, but rather joy because they are in Paradise or sorrow because they are in hell.

I think some, including me, think that after a death of a loved one who was not a believer our Christian love is to pray for the family that they be comforted during this period of sorrow. That goes for all and not just famous geniuses.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 New King James Version (NKJV)
Comfort in Suffering
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
