Harvesting Lavender Seeds

Winter's decided to arrive again and now is a good time to get out my seeds from last summer to get ready to plant soom. Lavender has tiny seeds in tiny pods and I've been extracting each seed from each pod with my fingers. Is there a different method to getting those seeds out? 'Cause I've gotta lotta seeds! :swoon:

My wife said she has trouble growing lavender here.
I have used a screen in the past to separate small flower seed from the chaff. there are different sizes of screen, and the older metal screen works best. I just crushed the pods or heads over the screen, then rub what's on top and forth, sometimes blowing the lighter stuff off the top. Usually the seeds are heavier.

I’m a big lavender grower and unless you got a hybrid or a lavender lady English variety, growing from seed is a pointless exercise. Most don’t bloom until the second year, they take 2 weeks to a month to sprout, and grow slowly. Many areas in the US, it may be too late for planting from seed. I just started mine last week and I live in New England and I waited 1-2 weeks too long already.

I've had quite a bit of success growing from seed! White lavender and munstead mostly. It does take alot of patience and planning at the right time, for sure!
@Humble me Lord I had thought of doing something similar to that technique. I was thinking of using a light roller to roll over the pods to release the seeds. When I cut the seed stems off the plant, I hang them upside down in a paper bag and some of the seeds drop to the bottom. For the most part they're stubborn and just wanna stay snuggled up in their cozy pods. It takes alot to get them out and my thumbs, fingers and shoulders are getting mighty weary. lol Not to mention, the smell of lavender downright puts me to sleep! :yawn:

Lol, I just pictured you, face down in the pile of dried lavender, like in the Wizard of Oz.
You might have to resort to wearing a mask to keep you from falling asleep >

Unfortunately Lilac and lavender don't grow where I live, it's too hot. but we have similar flowers in color and shape. Wisteria grows nice, and smells nice! And there is purple lantana. something like catmint grows around here, there's an aquatic flower that is an invasive species that is pretty, but it is a pest because it takes over and pushes out native plants and flowers. i like lavender, lilac flowers.

So do you see many orchids in your sub-tropical climate? You would enjoy the Mediterranean coastal area of France, anyway, where a lot of lavender is grown.

You must have intricate fingers to be able to deal with such tiny seeds.

Well, it was a job but I got 'er done! lol I didn't fall asleep, either! Now I've planted some and within a week they are already sprouting up. Waiting for at least 2 sets of leaves to grow before transplanting to individual pots. Fun stuff!
