Yes, as you were comparing a portrait done for the National Gallery to official White House portraits.
check Presidential Portraits and scroll through and compare THAT portrait with the other White House portraits.
I noticed your first image in the OP had his real White House portrait blocked out - why? So we wouldn't see it and think the other one was it?

Also, you're making a broad assumption that he knew it wasn't the official WH portrait. The news media has been rather terrible at making it clear that this was not his WH portrait, and I thought it was as well when I first read the news the other day.

That's what I am wondering. Is that the official portrait? because it is a photo rather than a painting. Maybe it is just there until the painting is completed. Seems weird to use a photograph rather than a painting.

Yes. President Obama was the first one to have his portrait done by digital camera.
It is still the official White House portrait as opposed the one in the National Portrait Gallery.

A photo of a person is a portrait. It describes the composition of the image. They don't necessarily have to be paintings to be called portraits. Also, both Bush and Clinton have their photographs in the OP instead of a painting. I guess those count as official portraits but not Obama's photo?

Photos and portraits are not mutually exclusive. A portrait is a type of photograph, painting or drawing that shows a person in a non-candid pose, looking into the camera, usually taken from the chest or shoulders up.
