The internet's pretty great sometimes.
Score!
I seen this pic yesterday and I never had a bad thought about it. But I like plants. I never even thought it was unusual.
I have to admit, I thought it was an internet hoax put on to mock the former President. But no, this is his official portrait.
Talk about removing all dignity from the office.
I guess that's partly why I like it. It's bright and colorful. There's actually something interesting there to look at.
You got 44 boring, old white guys in pretty much the same, unoriginal pose and then you got the cool, young black guy that brings a bit of color and some originality to the tradition.
Will he be painted with a thick head of hair? perhaps dressed like the Monopoly Man for all of the "winning" he did?I'm sure Donald Trump will bring dignity back to the presidential office with his portrait.
I don't seem to see that in this painting.
I can see why it might be off-putting to some from what is expected of a presidential portrait but I think he'd look even more floaty if there weren't any overlap of some of the leaves. It's not overly done, just a bit much on the one leg but he has to be a part of the scene too. Obama himself looks stone-faced and almost more like a statue which I think kind of counters the lightness of the flowers and leaves around him.I'm not criticizing the painting because it is colorful and so forth. Were I president, I think I'd want my official portrait to be more interesting as well. I just don't think it looks very good. Something about the leaves... covering him up and so forth. I don't know, I just don't like it. Maybe if he were painted in front of a garden or leaves or something.
the way he is just floating there, on the leaves, in front of a wall of leaves, but with the leaves covering up his legs... it just doesn't look right. It looks weird. Unprofessional.
I think you might be right about this.I think he was trying something new, but didn't have the heart to say to the artist, I reject this one and "try again".
It looks like someone redrew a photograph in front of a flat background and then slapped a few flat leaves in front of the photo to make it appear to have more depth.I'm not criticizing the painting because it is colorful and so forth. Like then, hate them all formal portraits in dignified presidential settings.
Then there is this.

I wonder just how difficult it could have been to actually look at other Smitsonian presidential portraits to find this one ...
What you missed him?! His state of the Onion Address was astonishingI never realized that Mr. Potato Head was a president.
I expect something like this:
