I have to admit, I thought it was an internet hoax put on to mock the former President. But no, this is his official portrait.

Talk about removing all dignity from the office.
I seen this pic yesterday and I never had a bad thought about it. But I like plants. I never even thought it was unusual.

I guess that's partly why I like it. It's bright and colorful. There's actually something interesting there to look at.

You got 44 boring, old white guys in pretty much the same, unoriginal pose and then you got the cool, young black guy that brings a bit of color and some originality to the tradition.

I'm not criticizing the painting because it is colorful and so forth. Were I president, I think I'd want my official portrait to be more interesting as well. I just don't think it looks very good. Something about the leaves... covering him up and so forth. I don't know, I just don't like it. Maybe if he were painted in front of a garden or leaves or something.
the way he is just floating there, on the leaves, in front of a wall of leaves, but with the leaves covering up his legs... it just doesn't look right. It looks weird. Unprofessional.

I think he was trying something new, but didn't have the heart to say to the artist, I reject this one and "try again".

I'm sure Donald Trump will bring dignity back to the presidential office with his portrait.
Will he be painted with a thick head of hair? perhaps dressed like the Monopoly Man for all of the "winning" he did?

I don't seem to see that in this painting.

It's not. I'm just making note of how if Dubya's portrait painter had a habit of painting white women killing black women, I don't think that he would have made more than one before the left called for his execution. People can paint what they want, but when I know that the people excusing the guy would be leading the witch hunt if you reversed the political or racial or religious viewpoint, I tend to point it out.

I can see why it might be off-putting to some from what is expected of a presidential portrait but I think he'd look even more floaty if there weren't any overlap of some of the leaves. It's not overly done, just a bit much on the one leg but he has to be a part of the scene too. Obama himself looks stone-faced and almost more like a statue which I think kind of counters the lightness of the flowers and leaves around him.

I think he was trying something new, but didn't have the heart to say to the artist, I reject this one and "try again".
I think you might be right about this.

It looks like someone redrew a photograph in front of a flat background and then slapped a few flat leaves in front of the photo to make it appear to have more depth.

But this is the style of this artist, and Obama chose him, so it's propably what he wanted.

yeah that's exactly what ti looks like.

It just doesn't make sense to me that it should cover up his legs so much but not his shoulders and so forth.

I think I'd want to be painted wearing something other than a monkey suit.

Like then, hate them all formal portraits in dignified presidential settings.

Then there is this.

I wonder just how difficult it could have been to actually look at other Smitsonian presidential portraits to find this one ...

That's not a bad picture, I suppose. His skin tone seems to match the gold color in the background. I hope when he has his portrait painted, he doesn't use either of the next two facial expressions.

He's actually smiling (?) in this picture here.

Pretty disingenuous when the portraits you are comparing his new portrait with are official White House Presidental portraits and is not Obama's official White House portrait which is here:

Presidential Portraits

The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery has interesting portraits like this of Nancy Reagan:

Nancy Reagan | National Portrait Gallery

or this of Nixon:
Richard Nixon | National Portrait Gallery
(you may have to click on savable image to see it).

Or this of Jimmy Carter by Ansel Adams:
Jimmy Carter | National Portrait Gallery

(you may need to click on savable image to see it)

You do know the difference between official White House portraits and a National Art Gallery, right?
