So he didn't clap for a totalitarian country who brainwashes and starves their own people? Why is that a big deal? May not be politically correct, but when China turning you into a complete puppet state would significantly bolster your way of life, I don't see the big deal.

He also didn't clap for one of our closest allies.

What Pence did was disgusting. If it was JUST North Korean athletes entering, that would be one thing maybe. But north and south entered as one group, a unified Korea group. He should have showed some respect at least for the South Korean aspect of the group.

What a disgrace to America. Yes, we all know both Koreas ever unifying may never happen. But the Olympics are about coming together as one. Where differences are put aside for the sake of global peace during a big sporting event. Heck, even NK decided to be part of the it.

Pence thus should have also been with the rest of the world and putting aside differences. Then he even skipped the meal because the NKs would be there. Ugh. So much for america being some sort of light. Pence, it was only for TWO WEEKS! You can't show respect for two weeks?

After the games we can go back to disliking NK, for now though we were all suppose to be one. And now america will be mocked because of Pence's stupid actions. I always hoped Trump would be impeached so we would have Pence at least whos a bit better. But now I hope Pence gets impeached too.

Maybe because you ought clap for the host country - regardless of whether or not they’ve chosen to bring in the North as a peace offering?

Maybe because the Olympics is about setting aside differences for a brief period of time?

Maybe because I expect more out of my nation than I do out of third world bellicose nations?

Maybe because strength is shown by knowing how and when to behave certain ways, and not feeling insecure about behaving appropriately in the moment? We’ve got more than enough to fight you if the fighting comes?

Maybe because in the fight for the hearts and minds of the world - our clapping for athletes there to compete in good faith would have been a nice contrast to the stony faced nonsense of Kim Jong Uns sister during the entrance of the US athletes? That we are stronger, that we are better, and we are more confident than that third world nation?

Maybe for those types of reasons? lol

I’d have gained a lot of respect for Pence if he’d clapped during the entry of Korea - both South and North - but no such luck.

Missed opportunity IMHO
He brought Fred Warmbier with him. It would've been a severe insult to his special guest had he clapped.

Then maybe don't bring the parents of Warmbier along - if it's going to jeopardize your ability to do the right thing and clap for both one of your greatest allies (South Korea) and participate in the spirit of the Olympics?

Of course then again, this is the group that brings along people like Gennifer Flowers to debates and buys tickets to NFL games simply so they can make a spectacle of themselves leaving.

The point in bringing Warmbier is to remind us and our allies that North Korea should not have been allowed to participate. How is it reasonable to play games with someone that publicly displays their eagerness to kill you? We're just giving Kim more propaganda to enslave his people with.

I think people are missing the point. We know NK is bad. However MAYBE, and its a super tiny maybe, NK did this to try and take the country in a better direction. To unify Korea and change NKs ways.

Or in easier terms would you turn your back on someone whos showing a sign of possibly wanting to change things for the better? Or would you prefer to judge them by their past? Would Jesus judge Kim if Kim really wanted to change?

Yes, again we realize the odds of things changing are tiny. But we should take any small show of unification as a glimmer of hope for a unified Korea. Where people are not starved to death. People are no longer eaten by a group of attack dogs. Where Kim maybe says "My system is broke and I am corrupt. Lets work together to create something better then what my family has always offered!".

By Pence turning his back, it shows he took a gesture of possible change and said "I don't care about you maybe wanting a good change! I'm gonna have a tantrum in a corner and kill any hope people have!". Its easy for us in America to throw away two divided countries hope. But for them, South Korea, they hang onto hope still. Just like we hang onto our hope of Jesus.

I don't watch the Olympics, and so I had no idea that they came out together. Your post made it sound like he was not clapping for North Korea specifically. Then again, I think that the Olympics is a bunch of claptrap, so I don't see it as this sacred thing. He should have clapped for South Korea, sure, but I think that you're being way too over dramatic about it. Like I said, he should've clapped for South Korea, but I don't think that it is worth getting all cringy over it.

Of course, there is a place for giving others an opportunity to repent, but you need to do it in a manner that will induce humility. The Olympic games are not that place, especially since everyone is clapping for you. Moreover, Kim will have plenty more propaganda now to display to his people.

South Korea understands why Pence didn't clap. We've been protecting them from North Korea for decades from an evil dictatorship that would rather starve their own people than take the finger off the button. I'm thankful that our VP knows that Kim competing in a contest of who runs faster and who jumps higher is in no way evidence that he could be having a change of heart. He marched into South Korea the day before with a parade of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

I couldn’t help but thinking about how Russia has done this to America when I read that.

Coming from someone whose party leader has never met a communist that he didn't want to snog, that's hilarious.
