Well when I read this:

tulc(didn't want to jump to a false conclusion which is why he asked) :)
I believe the day will come that we to completely stop sinning, but it isn't easy and we need the Lord's help.

would that day be after we die or before?
tulc(is again just trying to understand) :)
It would be a mistake, I think, to wait till after we die before we repent. I think it can be done now. Heaven is waiting for us. Check out Matthew 4:17 again.

I'm seeing we're sort of missing each others point here: I believe we should repent before we die. I also don't believe we can be sinless until we die. See my point? We repent because we sin, we sin because we're sinners and wont stop until we're in Heaven. But in this life? Not so much. :)

But they will claim that we can't stop sinning.

Yes, it's nearly impossible to stop sinning.

But I think it's also wrong to discourage anyone who's trying not to sin.

If anyone is trying to live righteously, what they deserve is encouragement, not rebuttals.

It's a tall mountain to climb, but I think that's where heaven is.

If we weren't related to Adam.

Jesus was the only perfect one (sinless).
Even if you lived in a cave and lived off worms, your mind still has the sin nature.
Of course, we have all sinned, but the Lord commanded us to repent.

My problem with that is that the most mature Christians that I've either had the pleasure of meeting or read about over the years are also the ones among us who seem the most thrilled about/beholden to God's grace, mercy, forgiveness, loving-kindness and patience (because the more they've come to know Jesus, and the more they've grown to be like Him, the further apart from Him and His perfection they all seem to realize that they are, or so I've been told/read).

But there is a time when will be like Him :amen: (but that will not be on this side of Glory I'm afraid)!

The thing about sin is that it brings trouble into our lives. That is why the Lord told us not to do it.

I think an issue people can have when they are conversing about repentance is that the english definition of repent means various things and so we need to communicate with clarity what type of repentance we are speaking of.

Repentance unto salvation is "metanoia/metanoeo" and it means to "change your mind." when Jesus says, "repent and believe the gospel." He means that you need to change your mind about what you are trusting, be any of your "righteous deeds" or another god, to get you to heaven and you need to start trusting Jesus to get you to heaven only.

Epistrepho is the greek word for "turn" and shub is it's counterpart in the hebrew old testament. these terms reflect sanctification after salvation...that is that we obey God by His strength in us and resist temptation by the Holy Spirit.

Thankfully we aren't saved by obedience, but by grace, lest it be of works. But we certainly ought to keep near to the Lord, delighting in His salvation, for the joy of the Lord is our strength, and dwelling on Him and His mercy will inspire us and strengthen us to obedience by the Spirit and not the letter.

No, it wasn't that long ago I yielded to temptation.
me too, but thank Jesus for these scriptures:
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One." 1 John 2:1

And Acts?
Actually on this site a lot of OPs used to challenge the Gospel of Luke, Acts and all of Paul's epistles as not inspired by the Holy Spirit. That actually prompted a site rule change.

I think some Christians sort of skip over the four gospels.
The NT epistles do speak of repentance. Yet remember they were written to the ekklesia and not unbelievers.

Perhaps so. Some seem to limit their focus to Paul's letters.

yep, there is a whole false church that relies on the gospel of Paul. They reject what Jesus and the Apostles say and claim that only what Paul said relates to the gentiles. Another lie that will cost many who are deceived by it. I have been declared a heretic by the Paul worshippers. Very sad for them. If only they could grasp the Truth according to Jesus Christ--as relayed by everyone including Paul instead of a warped version only based on Paul's letters in response to the issues God was dealing with in the churches Paul wrote to--which incidentally included converted Jews as well as Gentiles.

Dear dreadnought. In Matthew 22: 35-40: Jesus tells us: The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour as thyself. In verse 40 we are told: On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters. The Bible tells us: give up all selfish thoughts and wishes, Love God and love thy neighbour. Neighbour is all we know and all we meet, and we treat them as we would love to be treated. Jesus died that we might live, and Jesus is our Saviour. God is LOVE, and Love will always lead us aright. My point of view is: Love God and love each other. Love will always lead us aright, and Satan and his followers will always run away from LOVE. Let us all follow Jesus: Jesus is the WAY. Let Love rule us, and always bring the best out in us. God is LOVE, and Love will ALWAYS be the VICTOR. Try it, dreadnought, and we will always be the Children which God wants us to be. Love will ALWAYS be victorious. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.
