The "New Perspective on Paul" represents a significant shift since the 1960s in the way some scholars, especially Protestant scholars, interpret the writings of the Apostle Paul.

Paul, especially in his Epistle to the Romans, advocates justification through faith in Jesus Christ over justification through works of the Law.

New Perspective on Paul - Wikipedia

we cannot reconsider the Christian doctrine of justification without grappling with the meaning of “righteousness.” We have already argued that righteousness is not simply the imputed merit of another. But our criticism of traditional approaches must go beyond that. Dunn argues against the Greek view that righteousness is an impersonal, abstract standard, a measuring-stick or a balancing scale. Righteousness in Scriptural terms, he argues, grows out of covenant relationship.40 We forgive because we have been forgiven (Matt. 18:21-35); “we love because” God “first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

That is the meaning of a socially responsible and ecumenical doctrine of justification by faith.

...What do you think justification is? Can your understanding make sense of Paul's use of the term?

I have understood justified means person is found and declared righteous.

For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
Mat. 12:36-37

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Luke 18:10-14

As that example shows, person is justified by actions and it means, person is found righteous. When there is evidence that person is righteous, it can be declared that the person is righteous.

Righteous person is faithful/loyal to God and that is the reason why righteous will get eternal life.

Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith."
Galatians 3:11

But the righteous will live by faith. If he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.
Hebrews 10:38

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Mat. 25:46

Though Augustine was convinced by the arguments of his earlier patristic peers, he made use of the apostle Paul’s letters, especially the one to the Romans, to develop his own ideas on original sin and guilt. Today, however, it is accepted that Augustine, who had never mastered the Greek language, misread Paul in at least one instance by using an inadequate Latin translation of the Greek original.
:scratch: The Douay-Rheims was translated from the Vulgate that was written in Latin by St. Jerome in 382 A.D.

The Douay-Rheims had a large influence on the King James Version.

The doctrine was already known to the Jews and early Christians. As it is found in the fourth Book of Esdras, a work written by a Jew in the first century after Christ and widely read by the Christians. This book represents Adam as the author of the fall of the human race, as having transmitted to all his posterity the permanent infirmity, the malignity, the bad seed of sin.

So it is therefore impossible to make St. Augustine, who is of a much later date, the inventor of original sin.

Why is the anti-Catholic agenda so rife in this forum?

Judaism and Eastern Orthodoxy teach the fall had consequences, which all men suffer from. They don't teach all are born culpable, Original Sin.

Q: How can a sinful person like me become justified, since I am not righteous?.

A:
2 Corinthians 5:21...IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS!
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Justification:...judicial / LEGAL concept related to God as the righteous Judge of all the earth...Justification removes the guilt and penalty of sin for us. Experiential sanctification removes the growth and power of sin in and over us. JUST-IF-I-NEVER-SINNED. Found not qulity. Penalty Paid.

Imputation...“charging to the account” of one what properly belongs to the account of another.

Because of the person and work of Christ, God imputes our sin to the person of Jesus Christ AND imputes His righteousness to our account through faith in Him....
Romans 4:3-8 ...believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned (logizomai) as righteousness...
2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him

Judaism and Eastern Orthodoxy teach the fall had consequences, which all men suffer from. They don't teach all are born culpable, Original Sin.
I already posted the Jews understood the doctrine. As for eastern Orthodox, they are in schism so their views along with yours are the heresy of Pelagianism.

Job 14:1,4 – man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? All humans are afflicted with original sin, and this includes babies as well. This is why the Catholic Church has baptized babies for 2,000 years.

Psalm 51:5 – I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. We have inherited Adam’s sin from the moment of our conception.

Rom. 5:19 – by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners. Original sin is passed on as part of the human condition, and only God in the flesh could atone for our sins by the eternal sacrifice of Himself. Through this sacrifice, God has re-opened the doors to heaven, and through baptism, we are once again made children of God.

1 Cor. 15:21 – for by one man came death. In Adam, all die. In Christ, the new Adam, all now may live.
Eph. 2:1-3 – we were all dead through sin and all lived in the passions of our flesh until Christ came to save us.

Physical death became a blessing in that it kept man from an eternally fallen condition.

Q: Why is the anti-Catholic agenda so rife in this forum?

A: Because this forum allows the TRUTH as revealed in the Bible through Scriptura Suprema to Shine unprotected by RCC filters.

It is impossible for it to be the truth when it is actually a twisted lie. Martin Luther in his Commentary on St. John: "We are compelled to concede to the Papists that they have the Word of God, that we received it from them, and that without them we should have no knowledge of it at all."

It was the Catholic Church that compiled the bible around 382 A.D. So for nearly four centuries the early Christians had NO BIBLE! That which is recorded in history makes Sola Scriptura impossible! As does Luther's testimony.

Sola Scriptura is Luther's 15th century doctrine Not the Churches, so no filters around, to make such a claim!

Provide the verse:

  • Say(s) God created the world/universe out of nothing,
  • Say(s) Scripture is the sole authority (i.e., there is no other authority for learning about God and/or salvation),
  • Say(s) salvation is attainable through faith alone,
  • Tell(s) us how we know that the revelation of Jesus Christ ended with the death of the last Apostle,
  • Provide(s) a list of the canonical books of the Old Testament,
  • Provide(s) a list of the canonical books of the New Testament,
  • Explain(s) the doctrine of the Trinity,
  • Tell(s) us the name of the "beloved disciple",
  • Contain(s) the name of the author of the Gospel of Matthew,
  • Contain(s) the name of the author of the Gospel of Mark,
  • Contain(s) the name of the author of the Gospel of Luke,
  • Contain(s) the name of the author of the Gospel of John,
  • Contain(s) the name of the author of the Acts of the Apostles,
  • Tell(s) us the Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the Trinity,
  • Tell(s) us Jesus Christ was both fully God and fully man from the moment of conception (e.g. how do we know His Divinity wasn't infused later in His life?) and/or tells us Jesus Christ is One Person with two complete natures, human and Divine and not some other combination of the two natures (i.e., one or both being less than complete),
  • Tell(s) us Jesus Christ is of the same substance of Divinity as God the Father.

The Original View of Original Sin

Quote
Augustine’s association with Neoplatonic philosophers led him to introduce their outlook within the church. This had its effect in the development of doctrine. For example, Jesus was considered immaculately conceived—without sin in that His Father was God. But because His mother, Mary, had a human father, she suffered the effect of original sin. In order to present Jesus Christ as a perfect offspring without any inherited sin from either parent, the church had to find a way to label Mary as sinless. They did this by devising the doctrine of her immaculate conception, though this inevitably leads to further questions.

Other babies were not so fortunate. Some eight centuries later the Catholic theologian Anselm extended the implications of Augustine’s concept of original sin and claimed that babies who died, did so as sinners; as sinners, they had no access to eternal life but were condemned to eternal damnation.

Again I already refuted your post on the matter.

Ansleme who exactly, Antoine Anselme, Anselm of Laon, Anselm of Liege, Anselm Eckart, Anselm of Canterbury, Saint, Abbot Anselm, Saint, George Anselm Touchet, and the list goes on?

Where exactly is this information in the bible? For Sola Scripture is the doctrine you go by. You can't on one hand say the bible alone is all I need, then in the other hand go outside if it.

Anselm of Canterbury, if it makes any difference.

We refer to the Bible when studying what it says about a certain view. We refer to outside sources while studying what different denominations say about a certain view, obviously:

This is a Christian belief based on Paul’s statement, “Therefore just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). The doctrine was fully developed by the church father, Augustine of Hippo (354-430).

Genesis chapter 1+2;

Rev.4 (ALL NASB)
11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power;

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

There was no denominational, organized RCC in 100 AD nor late 300's AD to "produce"/canonize the Bible

ONLY ...men moved by (God) the Holy Spirit spoke from God...

Well I would like to study his writings first before commenting.

We refer to the Bible when studying what it says about a certain view.
But why would one need to if one is sure their interpretation is correct, and everything required for ones salvation is contained in the bible?

Quote
Jews do not believe in the doctrine of original sin. This is a Christian belief based on Paul’s statement, “Therefore just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). The doctrine was fully developed by the church father, Augustine of Hippo (354-430).

You merely provide a link to an anti-Christian who has rejected the entire NT And Jesus. Anyone that denies the Jesus is the Messiah is of the..........

The same Jews that in their 90AD council rejected the New Testament and Christ. The same council that the protestants used to reject the Catholic bible and again the NT and Jesus.

Augustine was not the originator of that doctrine, I refuted your claim already, so why keep pasting the same link over and over?

Genesis chapter 1+2;

Rev.4 (ALL NASB)
11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power;
for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

Genesis 1,2 - Provide the passages!

Rev 4 - That verse does not explain how God made the universe/world out of nothing!

NOT "sola scriptura"...SUPREMA SCRIPTURA

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Sola Scriptura, which ever way you'd like to dress it.

Hebrews 4:12-13: 12 Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. 13 No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

Paul is quoting Psalm 95. He has used the Psalm as both a warning to Christians to exposing human weaknesses and to urge them not to fall into sin and to lose their inheritance in the kingdom of heaven as their ancestors lost the hope of entering the Promised Land. Paul is talking of Jesus (Word) not bible alone!

I already posted on (2 Tim 3:16) to add 2 Tim. 3:16-17 – if these verses really mean that Paul was teaching sola Scriptura to the early Church, then why in 1 Thess. 2:13 does Paul teach that he is giving Revelation from God orally? Either Paul is contradicting his own teaching on sola Scriptura, or Paul was not teaching sola Scriptura.

Ephesians 2: 4-5,8-10
4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5 MADE US ALIVE with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions
—it is by grace (unmerited Love/Mercy/favor) you have been saved.

10 For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Refers to the Mosaic Law! James 2:24 – the phrase “faith alone” (the Greek “pisteos monon”) only occurs once in the Bible. “Man is justified by works and NOT faith alone.”
REV. 22
18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book:
if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book;
19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy,

This book! Nothing at all to do with the death of the last apostle!
Bible does not provide "lists" of books before or after "canonization".IMPOSSIBLE!
Of course it does not, so how was it decided which books should have been included in the bible? After all there were many spurious gospels around.
Mattthew 3: 16-17: The Beginning of Jesus' Ministry

"When the Counselor (God the Holy Spirit) comes,
whom I (God the Son/Jesus) will send to you from the Father (God the Father),
the Spirit of TRUTH (God the Holy Spirit) who goes out from the Father (God the Father),
he (the Spirit of TRUTH) will testify (to the spirit of Man) about me. (God the Son/Jesus)

John 14:26(NASB)
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things, and
bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Non of those verses explain the Trinity

All of John the Elder's writings condidered.

Your answer does not answer the question.

You are having to go outside of bible alone to answer. The bible alone doctrine fails!
ohn 14:26
But the Helper, (God) the Holy Spirit, whom (God) the Father will send in My (God the Son's) name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

John 14:16[ Role of God the Holy Spirit ]
I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

John 15:26
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the "Spirit of Truth" who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
Those verses do not describe how the Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the Trinity.
Tell(s) us Jesus Christ was both fully God and fully man from the moment of conception (e.g. how do we know His Divinity wasn't infused later in His life?)
Not answered.
Colossians 2 ....
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity (TRUE GOD) dwells in bodily form, (TRUE MAN)
10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

Colossians 1 ....
18b...For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness (of Deity) to dwell in Him,
  • Tell(s) us Jesus Christ is of the same substance of Divinity as God the Father.

and/or tells us Jesus Christ is One Person with two complete natures, human and Divine and not some other combination of the two natures (i.e., one or both being less than complete). Not answered!

John 10
29 My Father, who has given them (saved sheep) to Me (Good Shepherd), is greater than all;
and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30 I and the Father are one.”

Again not answered but you do add your own in brackets, to try and shoehorn Scripture in an attempt to answer.
Eisegesis: Reading into the Biblical text what isn't there in order to force the interpretation of the text to conform to certain preconceived ideas or theories.

The coming Catholic Church that will be founded by Jesus. Isa. 35:8, 54:13-17 – this prophecy refers to the Church as the Holy 'Way' where sons will be taught by God and they will not err.

Acts 9:2; 22:4; 24:14,22 – the early Church is identified as the “Way” prophesied in Isaiah 35:8 where fools will not err therein. Blink and you will miss the Catholic Church mentioned in Scripture!

Matt. 10:20; Luke 12:12 – Jesus tells His apostles it is not they who speak, but the Spirit of their Father speaking through them. If the Spirit is the one speaking and leading the Church, the Church cannot err on matters of faith and morals.

Matt. 18:17-18 – the Church (not Scripture) is the final authority on questions of the faith.

Matt. 28:20 – Jesus promises that He will be with the Church always. Jesus’ presence in the Church assures infallible teaching on faith and morals. With Jesus present, we can never be deceived.

John 14:16 – Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit would be with the Church forever. The Spirit prevents the teaching of error on faith and morals. It is guaranteed because the guarantee comes from God Himself who cannot lie.

John 16:12 – Jesus had many things to say but the apostles couldn’t bear them at that point. This demonstrates that the Church’s infallible doctrine develops over time. All public Revelation was completed with the death of the last apostle, but the doctrine of God’s Revelation develops as our minds and hearts are able to welcome and understand it.

John 16:13 – Jesus promises that the Spirit will “guide” the Church into all truth. Our knowledge of the truth develops as the Spirit guides the Church, and this happens over time.

Matt. 16:18 – Jesus says, “I will build my ‘Church’ (not churches).”

Matt. 16:19; 18:18 – Jesus gave the apostles binding and loosing authority. But this authority requires a visible Church because “binding and loosing” are visible acts. The Church cannot be invisible, or it cannot bind and loose.

Rom. 15:5 – Paul says that we as Christians must live in harmony with one another. But this can only happen if there is one Church with one body of faith.

Rom. 16:17 – Paul warns us to avoid those who create dissensions and difficulties. This includes those who break away from the Church and create one denomination after another. We need to avoid their teaching, and bring them back into the one fold of Christ.

Eph. 1:22-23; 5:23-32; Col. 1:18,24 – again, the Church does not mean “invisible” unity, because Paul called it the body (not the soul) of Christ. Bodies are visible, and souls are invisible.

Eph. 5:25 – the Church is the Bride of Christ. Jesus has only one Bride, not many.

Col. 1:18 – Christ is the Head of the one body, the Church. He is not the Head of many bodies or many sects.

2 Tim. 4:3 – this is a warning on following our own desires and not the teachings of God. It is not a cafeteria where we pick and choose.

Rev. 7:9 – the heavenly kingdom is filled with those from every nation and from all tribes, peoples and tongues. This is “catholic,” which means universal.

1 Peter 3:8 – Peter charges us to have unity of spirit. This is impossible unless there is a central teaching authority given to us by God.

Dan. 7:14 – Daniel prophesies that all peoples, nations and languages shall serve His kingdom. Again, this catholicity is only found in the Catholic Church.

1 Cor. 14:33 – God cannot be the author of the Protestant confusion. Only the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church claims and proves to be Christ’s Church.

Now let the devil speak.....

The early KJV had the same amount of books as the Douay-Rheims.

I forgot to add you must have skipped Luther's statement here it is again:
Martin Luther in his Commentary on St. John: "We are compelled to concede to the Papists that they have the Word of God, that we received it from them, and that without them we should have no knowledge of it at all."
Direct from the horses mouth. You ought to see his words on Mary. Praise indeed!
