A deadly “miracle cure” is resurfacing with potentially fatal consequences.

At least six British police forces have questioned families over allegations children as young as two were forced to drink bleach to "cure" autism, reports the Mirror.

It’s a product sold online called Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), which has developed a cult-like following of anti-vaxxers for nearly a decade. They claim it can cure diseases like AIDS, cancer, malaria, and autism.

When combined with citric acid as instructed, MMS (28 percent sodium chlorite) creates chlorine dioxide (industrial bleach). The solution is administered orally or via enema.

The concentration being used is about 10-20 times stronger than what's necessary to sanitize a countertop, which is enough for a small dab to kill 99.99% of the germs on the countertop. 22% is 220 g/L. I just tested my tap water at 0.00088 g/L (0.88mg/L) chlorine. That's just to put things into perspective. Despite the differences in molecular weight between sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and chlorine (a dissolved gas), it still gives a pretty good ballpark. I couldn't find anything on their web site about how to use it, or if any dilution was involved. Their "church" web site was a joke. They say that there's a vast difference between chlorine and their bleach, but the truth is that both are actually rather comparable in many ways, mainly regarding their effect on living tissues.

I wish I could find the meme that explained - given that people with Autism were more likely to work in the science fields, and therefore in those professions which worked to develop new vaccines - that in fact, rather than claiming that vaccines cause autism, it could in fact be said that autism causes vaccines.

The anti-vaccination movement strikes again, these parents should lose custody of their children.
Agree, Except foster home are full. And Autism is hard to care for. So an autistic toddler, child or teen is less likely to get a stable home.

I'm into "alternative medicine" myself but drinking chlorine is not my idea of "holistic" medicine. It's more like crazy. Tapwater already contains chlorine. Which is one reason I use a Brita water filter, because I don't want it in my body.

It just shows the desperation of some people that they'ld even try something like this.

Thankfully my parents were never that desperate. They instead put me on five different medications at once which doctors later said I shouldn't have been on four of them.

Being autistic sucks.

As somebody that was diagnosed as autistic seven years ago, it is really a case of learning to appreciate it as a gift instead of fighting it all the time, and learning that the autistic label is descriptive, not prescriptive.

Autism is a sign that society is trying to over-rationalize life. Many people with autism are talented individuals, and seeing them as only a problem is one of the weaknesses of the way our society is structured.

I don’t understand Brita filters. They remove chlorine but not the bacteria the chlorine is supposed to kill?

Am I missing something?

Chlorine is not so great for your kidneys, pure water is better, that's my rationale.

Chlorine is a necessary evil in modern society to keep tap water safe, but in no way does that make it ideal. It's not healthy in itself.

Plus, purified water tastes so much better. Brita filters will remove some pathogens from water but it shouldn't replace boiling for emergencies.

I use a water filter on my shower head because I have mild asthma, too. Chlorine isn't great for your lungs, either.

Chlorine does kill the legionella that can build up in shower heads :(

The filters are clever, though. They can screen out the chlorine (that has hopefully done it’s job by the time it gets to the taps) but leave the fluorine to help keep our teeth healthy.

What I have found in these sorts of cases is that it is less about knowledge and intellect and more about anger and distrust.

There are plenty who hate the government, establishments, and corporations. They control our lives, shove their products down our throats, and make the occasional mistake that kills us by the hundreds or thousands.

So the hate and distrust build up inside of us until we become emotional and angry. Once emotional and agree we are susceptible to all manner of influence.

Now enter these sorts of anecdotes and cures.

Find one example where medicine failed someone or got it wrong then follow it up with "one" example in which the alternative cure worked and that is that.

Nevermind the mathematical probabilities, never mind the actual statistical data, forget about the decades if not centuries worth of historical data... no. All you need is "one" anecdote to convince the masses.

Combine the anecdote with the emotional anger and distrust that has built up in our heads and hearts over the years and you have a winning formula for seducing some lemmings and convincing them to follow you as you walk off of a cliff
