Can money be an idol, do we worship God or mammon?
I think Christians can become idolaters if they let immoral lust, addictive substances, or pride govern their lives.
To call in subconscious anything "it is my God", if it is not the God of Theism, is the denial of the God of Theism existence. Thus, the atheism is the basic idolatry behind any idolatry.

Idol = anything which is between you and God which make you unable to focus on God like : pride , inappropriate content ,money , iphone .

Idolatory = worship of Idol like holding your Iphone and checking it every 5 min to see if somebody liked your post .

Idolatry:
You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:3

Idol:
You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God.

Exodus 20:4-5a

What is an idol or
idolatry?

I'd say whatever you think of as above the Lord, spend the most time on (the total of how you spend your time is your life), are the most anxious to get to again, and the thing you enjoy most over the Lord Jesus Christ. Not to mention a literal idol that is worshiped other than the Lord (I don't count Roman Catholics here, nor Eastern Orthodox or any others, the latria/hyperdulia/dulia distinction and all).

I find it interesting what people consider idols, and yet there's the critics of Catholicism who thinks we worship Mary and statues. It's good where all these contributions are going, though. An idol is something you put more importance in than the importance you give God. So if you don't go to Church on Sunday because you want the extra money to buy toys for your kids, you might be venturing into idolatry. Note: I didn't say if you work because you need to put food on your table on Sunday, or because your job requires you to work on Sunday, or the like. I said CHOOSE to earn money to buy frivolous things.

What is an idol or
idolatry?
Idols are common, as is idolatry, on earth, among most religious groups and organizations and corporations and governments.
Freedom from idols is rare, and given only in Christ Jesus, as the Father grants.

How often, or is "idol" and/or "idolatry" mentioned in the Epistles and Revelation ?

How did/ does/ YHVH (God) deal with it ?
