And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication,

And again the Lord said to Raphael: 'Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.

And Enoch went and said: 'Azazel, thou shalt have no peace: a severe sentence has gone forth against thee to put thee in bonds: And thou shalt not have toleration nor request granted to thee, because of the unrighteousness which thou hast taught, and because of all the works of godlessness and unrighteousness and sin which thou hast shown to men.'

Azazel is the name of the goat elected by lot "to Azazel" on the day of Atonement. Translators biased against the Book of Enoch translated his name to nonsense, "scapegoat".
Azazel is bound, in darkness, in the " wilderness" [sheol], until the Day of Atonement was fulfilled in the "70th generation", from the time of Noah's writing which is a fragment included in the Book of Enoch.

* List of some Church Fathers and Others mentioning Fallen Angels mating with human wives to create Giants :

• Justin Martyr - Second Apology - Chapter 5 (100-165 A.D.)

But the angels transgressed this appointment, and were captivated by love of women, and begat children who are those that are called demons; and besides, they afterwards subdued the human race to themselves, partly by magical writings, and partly by fears and the punishments they occasioned, and partly by teaching them to offer sacrifices, and incense, and libations, of which things they stood in need after they were enslaved by lustful passions; and among men they sowed murders, wars, adulteries, intemperate deeds, and all wickedness. Whence also the poets and mythologists, not knowing that it was the angels and those demons who had been begotten by them that did these things to men, and women, and cities, and nations, which they related, ascribed them to god himself, and to those who were accounted to be his very offspring, and to the offspring of those who were called his brothers, Neptune and Pluto, and to the children again of these their offspring. For whatever name each of the angels had given to himself and his children, by that name they called them“.

CHURCH FATHERS: The Second Apology (St. Justin Martyr)

• Athenagoras of Alexandria - A Plea For The Christians - Chapters 24 and 25 : (133-190 A.D.)

Just as with men, who have freedom of choice as to both virtue and vice (for you would not either honour the good or punish the bad, unless vice and virtue were in their own power; and some are diligent in the matters entrusted to them by you, and others faithless), so is it among the angels. Some, free agents, you will observe, such as they were created by God, continued in those things for which God had made and over which He had ordained them; but some outraged both the constitution of their nature and the government entrusted to them: namely, this ruler of matter and its various forms, and others of those who were placed about this first firmament (you know that we say nothing without witnesses, but state the things which have been declared by the prophets); these fell into impure love of virgins, and were subjugated by the flesh, and he became negligent and wicked in the management of the things entrusted to him. Of these lovers of virgins, therefore, were begotten those who are called giants. And if something has been said by the poets, too, about the giants, be not surprised at this: worldly Wisdom and divine differ as much from each other as truth and plausibility: the one is of heaven and the other of earth; and indeed, according to the prince of matter,- Chapter 24

These angels, then, who have fallen from heaven, and haunt the air and the earth, and are no longer able to rise to heavenly things, and the souls of the giants, which are the demons who wander about the world, perform actions similar, the one (that is, the demons) to the natures they have received, the other (that is, the angels) to the appetites they have indulged. But the prince of matter, as may be seen merely from what transpires, exercises a control and management contrary to the good that is in God:- Chapter 25

• Irenaeus - The Proof of the Apostolic Preaching 18 (130-202 A.D)

“And for a very long while wickedness extended and spread, and reached and laid hold upon the whole race of mankind, until a very small seed of righteousness remained among them: and illicit unions took place upon the earth, since angels were united with the daughters of the race of mankind; and they bore to them sons who for their exceeding greatness were called giants. And the angels brought as presents to their wives teachings of wickedness, in that they brought them the virtues of roots and herbs, dyeing in colours and cosmetics, the discovery of rare substances, love-potions, aversions, amours, concupiscence, constraints of love, spells of bewitchment, and all sorcery and idolatry hateful to God; by the entry of which things into the world evil extended and spread, while righteousness was diminished and enfeebled.”

• Titus Flavius Josephus - The Antiquities of the Jews - Book 1 - Chapter 3

(37-100 A.D.)

Now this posterity of Seth continued to esteem God as the Lord of the universe, and to have an entire regard to virtue, for seven generations; but in process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers, and did neither pay those honors to God which were appointed to them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness; whereby they made God to be their enemy, for Many Angels Of God Accompanied With Women And Begat Sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians Called Giants. But Noah was very uneasy at what they did; and, being displeased at their conduct, persuaded them to change their dispositions and their acts for the better; but, seeing that they did not yield to him, but were slaves to their wicked pleasures, he was afraid they would kill him, together with his wife and children, and those they had married; so he departed out of that land.

The Antiquities of the Jews, by Flavius Josephus

• Philo of Alexandria - On The Giants - (25 B.C.-50 A.D.)

And when The Angels of God saw the daughters of men that they were beautiful, They Took Unto Themselves Wives of all of them whom they Chose." Those beings, whom other philosophers call demons, Moses usually calls angels; and they are souls hovering in the air. And let no one suppose, that what is here stated is a fable, for it is necessarily true that the universe must be filled with living things in all its parts, since every one of its primary and elementary portions contains its appropriate animals and such as are consistent with its nature; --the earth containing terrestrial animals, the sea and the rivers containing aquatic animals, and the fire such as are born in the fire (but it is said, that such as these last are found chiefly in Macedonia), and the heaven containing the stars: for these also are entire souls pervading the universe, being unadulterated and divine, inasmuch as they move in a circle, which is the kind of motion most akin to the mind, for every one of them is the parent mind.

Philo: On the Giants

• Archelaus - The Acts of The Disputation with The Heresiarch Manes - Chapter 32 (3rd Century)

Hence also certain of The Angels, refusing to submit themselves to the commandment of God, resisted His will; and one of them indeed fell like a flash of lightning upon the earth, While Others, harassed by the dragon, sought their felicity In Intercourse With The Daughters Of Men, and thus brought on themselves the merited award of the punishment of eternal fire.

• Commodianus - The Instructions of Commodianus - Chapter 3 - (3rd Century)
When Almighty God, to beautify the nature of the world, willed that that earth should be visited By Angels, when they were sent down they despised His laws. Such was the beauty of women, that it turned them aside; so that, being contaminated, they could not return to heaven. Rebels from God, they uttered words against Him. Then the Highest uttered His judgment against them; and from their Seed Giants are said to have been born. By them arts were made known in the earth, and they taught the dyeing of wool, and everything which is done; and to them, when they died, men erected images. But the Almighty, because they were of an evil seed, did not approve that, when dead, they should be brought back from death. Whence wandering they now subvert many bodies, and it is such as these especially that ye this day worship and pray to as gods.

• Eusebius of Caesarea - Preparations - Book 5 - Chapter 4 - (263-339 A.D.)

And this argument is still further confirmed by Plutarch, in the passage where he says that the mythical narratives told as concerning gods are certain tales about daemons, and the deeds of Giants and Titans celebrated in song among the Greeks are also stories about daemons, intended to suggest a new phase of thought.

Of this kind then perhaps were the statements in the Sacred Scripture concerning the giants before the Mood, and those concerning their progenitors, of whom it is said, 'And when The Angels of God saw The Daughters Of Men that they were fair, They Took Unto Them Wives Of All That They Chose,' and of these were born 'The Giants the men of renown which were of old.'

For one might say That These Demons Are Those Giants, And That Their Spirits Have Been Deified By The Subsequent Generations Of Men, and that their battles, and their quarrels among themselves, and their wars are the subjects of these legends that are told as of gods. Plutarch indeed, in the discourse which he composed On Isis and the gods of the Egyptians, speaks as follows word for word:

Sure Thing. There are a bunch more on this site : The Book of Enoch - Page 3

• This is A Collective Post of Early Church Fathers and Others Mentioning The Book Of Enoch OR mentioning Fallen Angels mating with Human Women :

1. • Tertullian - On the Apparel of Women - Book 1 - Chapter 3:1-3 (160-220 A.D.)

I am aware that The Scripture Of Enoch which has assigned this order of action to angels, is not received by some, because it is not admitted into the Jewish canon either. I suppose they did not think that, having been published before the deluge, it could have safely survived that world-wide calamity, the abolisher of all things. If that is the reason for rejecting it, let them recall to their memory that Noah, the survivor of the deluge, was the great-grandson of Enoch himself; and he, of course, had heard and remembered, from domestic renown and hereditary tradition, concerning his own great-grandfather’s ‘grace in the sight of God,’ (Genesis 6:8) and concerning all his preachings; since Enoch had given no other charge to Methuselah than that he should hand on the knowledge of them to his posterity. Noah therefore, no doubt, might have succeeded in the trusteeship of his preaching; or, had the case been otherwise, he would not have been silent alike concerning the disposition of things made by God, his Preserver, and concerning the particular glory of his own house.
“If Noah had not had this conservative power by so short a route, there would still be this consideration to warrant our assertion of the genuineness of this Scripture: he could equally have renewed it, under the Spirit’s inspiration, after it had been destroyed by the violence of the deluge, as, after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian storming of it, every document of the Jewish literature is generally agreed to have been restored through Ezra.
But since Enoch in the same Scripture has preached likewise concerning the Lord, nothing at all must be rejected by us which pertains to us; and we read that ‘every Scripture suitable for edification is divinely inspired.’ (2 Timothy 3:16) By the Jews it may now seem to have been rejected for that very reason, just like all the other portions nearly which tell of Christ. Nor, of course, is this fact wonderful, that they did not receive some Scriptures which spake of Him whom even in person, speaking in their presence, they were not to receive. To these considerations is added the fact that Enoch possesses a testimony in the Apostle Jude.” (Jude 1:14-15)

CHURCH FATHERS: On the Apparel of Women (Tertullian)

2. • Tertullian - On the Apparel of Women - Book 2 - Chapter 10 - (160-220 A.D.)

But, if the self-same angels who disclosed both the material substances of this kind and their charms— of gold, I mean, and lustrous stones— and taught men how to work them, and by and by instructed them, among their other (instructions), in (the virtues of) eyelid-powder and the dyeings of fleeces, have been condemned by God,As Enoch Tells Us, how shall we please God while we joy in the things of those (angles) who, on these accounts, have provoked the anger and the vengeance of God?

CHURCH FATHERS: On the Apparel of Women (Tertullian)

Tertullian Quoting 1 Enoch 99:6-7

3. • Tertullian - On Idolatry - Chapter 4 (160-220 A.D.)

Enoch had preceded, predicting that the demons, and the spirits of the angelic apostates, would turn into idolatry all the elements, all the garniture of the universe, all things contained in the heaven, in the sea, in the earth, that they might be consecrated as God, in opposition to God. All things, therefore, does human error worship, except the Founder of all Himself. The images of those things are idols; the consecration of the images is idolatry. Whatever guilt idolatry incurs, must necessarily be imputed to every artificer of every idol. In short, the same Enoch fore-condemns in general menace both idol-worshippers and idol-makers together. And again: "I swear to you, sinners, that against the day of perdition of blood repentance is being prepared. You who serve stones, and you who make images of gold, and silver, and wood, and stones and clay, and serve phantoms, and demons, and spiritsin fanes, and all errors not according to knowledge, shall find no help from them "

• Tertullian

CHURCH FATHERS: On Idolatry (Tertullian)

And again I swear to you, ye sinners, that sin is prepared for a day of unceasing bloodshed. And they who worship stones, and grave images of gold and silver and wood (and stone) and clay, and those who worship impure spirits and demons, and all kinds of idols not according to knowledge, shall get no manner of help from them.

4. • Origen - de Principiis - Book 1 - Chapter 3 - Section 3 (185-254 A.D.)

That all things were created by God, and that there is no creature which exists but has derived from Him its being, is established from many declarations of Scripture; those assertions being refuted and rejected which are falsely alleged by some respecting the existence either of a matter co-eternal with God, or of unbegotten souls, in which they would have it that God implanted not so much the power of existence, as equality and order. For even in that little treatise called The Pastor or Angel of Repentance, composed by Hennas, we have the following: "First of all, believe that there is one God who created and arranged all things; who, when nothing formerly existed, caused all things to be; who Himself contains all things, but Himself is contained by none." And In The Book Of Enoch Also We Have Similar Descriptions.

Since the Son of God is always one and the same, He gives to those who believe on Him a well of water [springing up] to eternal life, but He causes the unfruitful fig-tree immediately to dry up; and in the days of Noah He justly brought on the deluge for the purpose of extinguishing that most infamous race of men then existent, who could not bring forth fruit to God, since the angels that sinned had commingled with them, and [acted as He did] in order that He might put a check upon the sins of these men, but [that at the same time] He might preserve the archetype, the formation of Adam

CHURCH FATHERS: Against Heresies, IV.36 (St. Irenaeus)

18. • Irenaeus
- Against Heresies - Book 4 - Chapter 16 -
(130-202 A.D.)
Enoch, too, pleasing God, without circumcision, discharged the office of God’s legate to the angels although he was a man, and was translated, and is preserved until now as a witness of the just judgment of God, because the angels when they had transgressed fell to the earth for judgment, but the man who pleased [God] was translated for salvation.

19.
Clement - The Stromata - Book 5 - Chapter 1 -
(150-215 A.D.)

And we showed in the first Miscellany that the philosophers of the Greeks are called thieves, inasmuch as they have taken without acknowledgment their principal dogmas from Moses and the prophets. To which also we shall add, that the angels who had obtained the superior rank, having sunk into pleasures, told to the women the secrets which had come to their knowledge; while the rest of the angels concealed them, or rather, kept them against the coming of the Lord. Thence emanated the doctrine of providence, and the revelation of high things; and prophecy having already been imparted to the philosophers of the Greeks, the treatment of dogma arose among the philosophers,

Clement of Alexandria: Stromata, Book 5

20.
• Lactantius (3rd to 4th Century) The Divine Institutes - The Epitome, - Chapter 27
But when God saw this, He sent His angels to instruct the race of men, and to protect them from all evil. He gave these a command to abstain from earthly things, lest, being polluted by any taint, they should be deprived of the honour of angels. But that wily accuser, while they tarried among men, allured these also to pleasures, so that they might defile themselves with women. Then, being condemned by the sentence of God, and cast forth on account of their sins, they lost both the name and substance of angels. Thus, having become ministers of the devil, that they might have a solace of their ruin, they betook themselves to the ruining of men, for whose protection they had come.

Here's A Video that I found that shows some of the Quotes from Church Fathers also :

this alone does not account for the vast lack of knowledge in the OT. I'm happy you like my post but I did not offer it for accolades I did so because I see serious inconsistencies presented as a pre-flood text. The rest of the OT simply does not support any knowledge of the book of Enoch and this is too important to pass off as a genre conflict especially when it is claimed to pre-date them all. It's not just Sheol either it's heaven as well. The righteous and the unrighteous indiscriminately go to Sheol when they die in the OT and it is not dichotomized into a good/bad heaven/hell type place. There is no concept of "going to heaven" after you die in the OT this is only revealed in the NT. Enoch's concepts of the afterlife are too close to greek mythology and too abstract for a pre-flood text, this is why it is a better fit around 300 BC then it is 3000 BC. It simply does not fit the OT worldview and especially not a pre-flood worldview.

Eusebius argues that what the Greeks called gods and heroes are in fact evil angels and demons that they have deified and worshipped. He says Plutarch even admitted the heroes and titans were demons. He proceeds to quote Genesis 6 from the Septuagint where, rather than 'sons of God' we read 'the angels of God'.

Eusebius of Caesarea - refers to the narrative story from the Book of Enoch.

From "Preparations" - Book 5 - Chapter 4 - (263-339 A.D.)

"And this argument is still further confirmed by Plutarch, in the passage where he says that the mythical narratives told as concerning gods are certain tales about demons, and the deeds of Giants and Titans celebrated in song among the Greeks are also stories about demons, intended to suggest a new phase of thought.

"Of this kind then perhaps were the statements in the Sacred Scripture concerning the giants before the flood, and those concerning their progenitors, of whom it is said, 'And when the angels of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair, they took unto them wives of all that they chose, and of these were born the giants the men of renown which were of old.' (Genesis 6:1 & 4b)

"For one might say That These demons are those giants, and that their spirits have been deified by the subsequent generations of men, and that their battles, and their quarrels among themselves, and their wars are the subjects of these legends that are told as of gods."

The myth may be influenced by canaanite religions but I see Enoch as a ball tossed back and forth, where the original source may have been from the Hebrews but undeveloped and kept through oral tradition. This is passed down to the Phoenicians where the Greeks picked it up and further developed it. It then comes full circle and influences the hebrews during the hellinization period where the hebrew account adopts the more developed features of the Greek. It's like a game of telephone where the last person whispers the message back the first person and the first person decides their version is better.

The two accounts are too closely related for thousands of years to be their connection. Their closeness suggests a first hand influence. There is no first hand hebrew-greek historical evidence but there is greek-hebrew.

Abraham had his own copy of the book of Enoch. He got it from Noah and Shem. He lived with them for 30 years.
Shem outlived Abraham.
The Tower of Babel fell when Abraham was almost 50 years old. Men knew why.
Noah was alive when it fell and when language was confounded and when the earth began to be divided into separated continents and men began to be scattered over earth by their tribes' tongues, and the lives of men were cut short.
Abraham's descendants filled the east. He had 8 sons by 3 wives, and he taught them well.
Men knew. Paul said all men of all the nations/tribes knew.
They changed the truths of what they knew, to lies. Men still do that.

History of the nations is traceable by records left.
Abraham's descendants, through Isaac, were elected to be the tribe the promised Messiah would come into the world through.
The timeline of history is not hidden in darkness, and the myths you want to make so much of as not being connected to the truth that Abraham delivered to his sons, which truths were made into lies, as Paul said in Romans, are those things that Enoch wrote and warned about.

Azazel is also mentioned in The 1901 Jewish Study Bible and The America Standard Version in : Leviticus 16:8, 16:10 and 16:26.

and he shall place lots upon the two goats, one marked for the LORD and the other marked for Azazel.
Leviticus 16:8

while the goat designated by lot for Aza zel shall be left standing alive before the LoRD, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel.
Leviticus 16:10

He who set the Azazel-goat free shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may reenter the camp.
Leviticus 16:26

Reposted from another poster's thread:

Irenaeus refers to the Book of Enoch. Notice Irenaeus says the era of Watcher misrule lasted "for a very long while". I'd suggest this indicates he had a copy of Enoch. According to Enoch's book, if you do the math, the era of Watcher misrule lasted 1,000 years.

From "The Proof of the Apostolic Preaching" 18 (130-202 A.D)

Sure Thing. There are a bunch more on this site : The Book of Enoch - Page 3<snip>
Hello Jude1:3Contendforthefaith. I have to say this is one of the best posts I've read on this subject in a long time. It just goes to show, we are not inventing something new, but rather rediscovering the roots of something that was well received in ancient times.

May I ask, is this post the result of your own research or have you grabbed it from somewhere else? I'm thinking I'd like to see how far we can push this. In my research into Enoch over the years, I have avoided the history of the Book of Enoch's use and/or influence in the history of the Church in Latin and Greek Christendom. I'd like to delve further...

You may be interested that my focus has been in excavating this theme from earlier epochs, namely the Apostolic Age and earlier. I've found a lot. If you can wade past my eschatology (which I suspect is quite different from your own as I gather you are Orthodox. For me eschatology is peripheral anyway. What matters is Christ will return and rule supreme forever), I suspect you will find my research engaging, unless you've already done it yourself! :)

Yeah, Definitely.

I wanted to post a collective post with all those quotes because I was surprised that there wasn't more places on the Internet that showed them honestly.

There is actually even more that I didn't post from Barnabas, more from Origen, Clement, Jerome, Augustine and others. Maybe someone will post more quotes to add to the list.

Also, just to let you know I picked up that book you put out from Amazon (The Book of Enoch) "Time Capsule to the Last Generation". I'm reading through it now.

Maybe we can post all these citations somewhere online where the the post would be "sticky" and we could aggregate the citations. We could then break them down according to era, like "Before Christ", "Apostolic Era", "Ante-Nicene", etc.
