One belief is that James was the son of Joseph by a previous marriage. He was 12 years old when Jesus was born and Mary agreed to raise James and take care of him along with Jesus.

Not certain.

James the son of Alphaeus, when preaching in Jerusalem was stoned to death by the Jews, and was buried there beside the temple.

James, the brother of Yahshua was also stoned to death by the Jews. With this testimony of Hippolytus there is good reason to assume that James the son of Alphaeus is the same person as James the brother of Yahshua.

I think that is the Orthodox version. The Catholic has him as a cousin. (both assume Mary to be a lifelong virgin)

James was the bio brother of Our Lord, son of Joseph and Mary.

He was the senior congregational leader of the congregation in Jerusalem.
At the same time he was also Rosh Yeshiva for one of the main Pharisee schools in Jerusalem, IMO it was probably Beit Shammai.

He was killed by his students circa 65 ad when he refused to distance himself from his Brother. They took him to the top of the Temple and threw him off.

He was replaced by his cousin Simon bar Clopas as leader of the Jerusalem congregation.

James son of Alpheus was one of the 12. James the brother of the Lord was not a believer until after the resurrection.

At ACTS.15:1-29, James the Just, the Bishop of Jerusalem, had to be confronted by Peter's inspired testimony about the power of God/Holy Spirit before he was reluctantly(.?) convinced by Paul's arguments.

GALATIANS.2:9-17 says that Apostle Paul had disliked Bishop James the Just, who was the leader of the Judaizers, a group of early Jewish Christians in Jerusalem/Judea, who demanded that the new Gentile Christians converted by Paul, be required to keep Moses Law, just like themselves and the Jews.

ACTS.20:23; 21:11 & 18-40 say that James had likely conspired against Paul, which eventually led to Paul being arrested by the Roman soldiers, imprisoned and a few years later executed in Rome.

Peter, the Apostle to the Jews, surprisingly, did not become the first Bishop of Jerusalem. Instead, it was James the Just, a brother of Jesus Christ. Nepotism.?

Some etymological research leads me to believe that the names were either written down to be ambiguous or changed from a specific doctrinal perspective.

Alphaeus originally a Semitic name is the same as Clopas (same name, different dialect), and both come from the verb חלף (halap), meaning to change, exchange or renew.

Now could these two names that mean 'renew' or 'exchange' have been substituted for Joseph?

A somewhat kindred verb is יסף (yasap), meaning to add, increase or do again, and this verb is the root of the name Joseph, belonging to the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus.

Interesting. Clopas was Joseph's brother. There were two disciples called "son of Alphaeus." That would make James the Less and Matthew Yeshua's cousins.

Considering that there is some documentation that the 'mother church' actually suppressed both informational and bodily what was called the desposyni, the Lords family because it didn't fit in with their ideal of a virgin mother continually.

The reason James was the leader of the true 'Mother Church' was that it was a dynastic succession and James was next in line after Yeshua.

The second-century historian Hegesippus wrote that following James’s death, the 'Church' chose another of Jesus’ blood relatives, His cousin Simon or Simeon.

Was that a cousin or was this the younger brother?
