Hawaii residents received false emergency alert about an incoming missile

The notification was quickly labeled a false report: Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard a screenshot of the alert, saying that it was a false alarm, and that she had confirmed with officials that there was no danger to the island. Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency likewise confirmed that there was no threat, and that it was investigating the incident. The US Pacific Command noted that the message was sent in error, and it took more than 30 minutes for authorities to push out a correction.

30 minutes to push a correction...

I just heard it was 38 minutes before a 'false alarm' message was finally issued  Also, Hawaii has no bomb shelters, so people are supposed to protect themselves from a nuclear blast by moving away from the windows in their offices and homes, or by getting out of their cars and lying flat on the ground.

I'm curious how that works because I don't use a cellphone. A government agency can just send out messages to every phone number? Or do people subscribe for something like that?
The former. Possible alerts include imminent threats to safety, messages from the US president, and AMBER (child abduction) alerts.

People actually predicted that trump would use this message system quite often. As per usual, they were wrong.

You mean most states in America don't have bomb shelters. But the trouble maker Trump.

As someone who grew up in the Cold war I can appreciate the fear of imminent nuclear annihilation that characterised most of my childhood. It is a real shame that American administrations over the last 20 years have turned a blind eye to the growing problem in North Korea and done nothing about it. Now that same fear has returned after decades of relief. Trump might be too late to correct the damage but he is right that the era of strategic patience with North Korea has been a disaster. China is the key to this crisis and until they see that it is not in their best interest to have a nuclear armed rogue state on their doorstep little will change.

OR - as they told us when we were kids:

When you see the flash
Get under a desk or heavy table
Place your head between your knees
Kiss your [backside] goodbye.

Look for a spike in the birth rate in October...

At least it does demonstrate that the warning system works, even if it works a touch too well. There've been quite a few idle questions here (UK) about what we've got, which it turns out is announcements on TV and Radio and that's about it.
