County jails aren't on the same level as prisons. A good many of the people held in county haven't even been convicted of anything - they're just too poor to make bail for their parking ticket or jay walking violation. The ones who have been convicted are only guilty of misdemeanors - otherwise they'd be in a state prison or a federal prison.

Sexual violence against men in prison is not a dirty joke to be laughed at or tolerated. It's a serious crime which is not inevitable unless the culture permits/encourages it.

I don't know, but he was censured for not investigating sex crimes committed against minorities in his county.

Ignoring his political views and all the pros and cons in his long tenure as sheriff, it just seems to me that age 85 is a bit much to be running for the Senate.

The issue, which has been conflated, is that there are reports of minorities reporting rapes and sexual abuse (not occurring in prison) and Arpaio department not investigating the cases. And this is beyond the issues of abuse by deputies of prisoners in his care; the county paid out at least $43 million in settlements; including in 4 deaths that evidence shows is directly attributable to abuse by the detention officers. And this is separate from another complaint that required physicals were not being down within 14 days of being jailed, and that medical treatment was denied -- including that only 1/3 of prisoners with communicable diseases or infections received medical treatment.

He would be a solid Republican candidate, and the Arizona GOP's best hope is to support him as quickly as possible.

So what's your point? That is neither what I said nor implied.

Actual rapists may be held in county jails and may work in county jails as well, by many accounts; however, "alleged" would mean they haven't been found guilty which would mean they may, in fact, be not guilty of the charges.

The democrats need the GOP to run people like Sheriff Joe and Roy Moore.
