Hey, brother, part of the process of sanctification is a growing of faith and trust of God. With that comes the faith and trust that God has you right where he wants and thinks you should be, and that he will bring to completion the work that he began in you when you were saved. He might be using this as a way to teach you patience, look at it that way. You have an eternity to become and be more like Christ, because worst case scenario is that you will go to heaven at a younger age than you would have expected; and once that happens, you'll never sin again. So I would read Ecclesiastes 3 and study what the vanity of human labor is verses the riches of God's workmanship; because if you try to force yourself to become more like Christ quickly on your own accord, you're not going to do it the way God wants you to do it, which will result in counter-productivity. This is from personal experience.
I also have personal experiences about that. That's why I created this thread, to know how I should do the sanctification. I learned that I should do it more slowly.

What kind of examples He uses to teach us?

Life, is there any other? It's good that you desire and hunger for righteousness but we can't rush the process we can only long, but that builds longsuffering.

Matt 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied

Galatians 5:22-26

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Gal 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Gal 5:26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.

So it's a walk, we grow/mature as we walk in the Spirit not the flesh.

What does Gal 5:24 mean? I still struggle with the desires of my flesh. How is it possible if I have crucified it?

How are diamonds formed? Most natural diamonds are formed at high temperature and pressure at depths of 87 to 118 mi in the Earth's mantle.

In order to be like Christ, you must be purified, put through the fires of purification.

These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold--though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. (1 Peter)

Wanting to be more like Christ is a difficult process. It feels as if I have been in the process ever since I've been saved and I've never left the fire!

Thanks, I'll try to remember that when I'm tempted to sin!

I know it's my sinful nature that temps me. What's the difference between tempting and testing?

Maybe God allows trials to come into your life if you are pre-disposed to sin. That is if you're walking mostly in the flesh God allows events in your life to tempt you. God doesn't create the temptations, you do through your fleshly desires.

The closer you come to God and pray that He deliver you from sin, the more you walk in the Spirit, so He prevents the circumstances from arising which would tempt you.

It's a thin line God doesn't control our lives He allows free will but He also wants us to exercise our righteousness, that is walking in the Spirit.

What does Gal 5:24 mean? I still struggle with the desires of my flesh. How is it possible if I have crucified it?

God wants us to be conformed to the Image of His Son, that is His desire for us. Remember, Christ suffered for us on a cross;

Col 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions.

1 Pet 4:13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.

So we live this life in our bodies, that is we are still alive in our flesh. But we also partake in His Spirit by the Holy Spirit who lives in us, we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. So, if we are suffering in the flesh (we still live in the flesh) instead of gratifying the flesh we draw closer to Christ.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

To me the flesh isn't just carnal desires like sex or alcohol or any of the other physical pleasures like over-eating but the flesh is also our pride, vanity, ego. So anything we indulge in that boosts our ego can also be considered walking in the flesh.

None of us are perfect and we all sin in various ways, anything that doesn't proceed from faith is sin. Faith is relying on God walking in the Spirit.

Yes, flesh includes lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life. Btw I made a thread about those recently.

Now that I try to walk in the Spirit again, I feel a little sad all the time because I can't do all the little sins and be unbiblically proud all the time. Shouldn't the opposite be happening? One of the fruits of the Spirit is joy, but how can I get it?

Good question, I'm working/living on that so if I ever find out I'll tell you.

So that you know, for about two months I have been basically ignoring God and not caring about sins so much. Thankfully I try to walk in the Spirit now.

It's a life long process, the question of course is how long do we have left?

So I can understand your anxiety at reaching that state, all I can say is to trust God, we can do nothing else really of benefit.

Your threads are good Fish, they ask the right questions.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the process of transforming to be more like Christ? I know I can pray, read the Bible and obey God, but is there something else I can do?

Forgive everyone for everything no matter what, past present and future. This is the mark of a true follower. The only way to receive God's gifts, it is a requirement, there is no way around it, you will always be godless until this is done to absolute. You do it because it is the way things are, it is the natural state of heaven where there is no need for it because all is already forgiven, no one in the kingdom of God lacks forgiveness even in the slightest because any shred of judgement will keep the gate shut tight.

I don't remember ever not forgiving people if they repent in the last couple years. What do you do if someone doesn't repent or insists what they did was right?

Know, love, and submit. That's the heart of it. Know God (John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 2 Timothy 1:12), love Him with all you've got (Matthew 22:36-38), and submit your will and way to His (Romans 12:1; James 4:10). Do these things persistently and consistently and you will find yourself shining brightly for Christ and being a clear reflection of him to the world. The keys to Christlikeness are simple, but the "turning" of them in the lock of spiritual living is not. In fact, it takes the power of God for any of us to faithfully do any of these three basic things. From beginning to end, our walk with God is fundamentally His doing. (Philippians 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

The whole Christian life is a process of becoming more Christ-like. I believe everything gets better when I'm more like Him so it's natural to want to speed up the process.

You can't speed up the process, nor would you want to.

When trying to discern ones vocation, it's always best to start in your immediate life situation.

A great book on this subject would be Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux. If you can get past the Catholic jargon, there is alot of wisdom there.

Actually, the more perfect you become, the heavier the crosses you will bear. Temptation is not a result of sin, but happens to the greatest of saints. That's why it's important not to rush the process. Pride goeth before a fall.

When I was younger, I was more devoted to asceticism of all kinds, until I broke down and realized in the end my greatest sin was pride, envy, all those really difficult sins. You don't want to rush the process by having a self-styled spirituality built on a foundation of pride. What the monastics called "vainglory". There are stories of monks facing spiritual harm because they tried to rush into places they did not belong.
