As I close in on being 50 years-old and learning more about faith and living for God, not man, I am getting this new desire to look into a non-profit type business where I can help others in some capacity how having God as the center point in their lives will change them. The problem is I have absolutely no experience about non-profit organizations or what it takes to get one going.

I work for a private company where there's no joy or satisfaction for what I do. It's just a routine duty and not very exciting at all. Typical American job, working for the man. Although, it pays the bills but that's about it.

I'd like to wake up in the morning and feel an overwhelming joy and sense of reward and accomplishment in my duties while I have some time left on this planet. I'd like to start something on the side, something in my spare time, that may lead into making a living doing it. My goal is not being wealthy, just enough to sustain a living and pay bills. The more important thing for me is working for the Lord and job reward.

Anyone familiar with non-profit type businesses or links where I can look into it more? As of now I don't know what direction it would be at all, just getting ideas for now.

Thanks folks!

Go for it if you think you can do it!

Be prepared for government officials to go after you ruthlessly and unreasonably in the pretence that you are a rich entrepreneur who owes them money, fees and bureaucratic control (especially in some areas). You might need a good lawyer to tell intrusive officials legally and politely to go away.

The first thing you need to do is talk to an attorney who handles non-profits. One who knows what paperwork needs to be completed and given to the government to apply for non-profit status.
Then you need to find an accountant who can set up your bookkeeping in accordance with GAAP for a non-profit. The books need to be completely transparent.
If you do these two things successfully you should be set to go and not run into problems with the IRS or other government authorities.

Right now this is just sticking my big toe out there to see if the waters are too cold, or hot to even venture into something like that. I've become accustom to working for someone else and I know taking on a personal nonprofit venture would be 24/7 extremely hard work and that's not something I'm use to! Not that I'm lazy, but it would have to be something I'd really get in to. The issue is, I don't know what. I need to really pray about this to seek answers. But I feel there's something waiting for me in life on this earth, I just need time to discover it and look for signs that will guide me to it. What I'm doing now is pointless, boring and a waste of human time. At least I know this much.

I hear about stories constantly about nonprofit organizations doing this, and doing that and they joy it brings to everyone involved. If they can do it, why can't I? After all, somebody had the idea, they just acted on it.

Sorry, just rambling.... :)

Maybe the thing to do is to find out what are the needs of people in your community. What needs are not being sufficiently be met. Then decide if that one of those things is something you would want to do and have the basic knowledge to do.

@CoolDude68 I'll keep you on my list of people to contact in the future. I am trying to work on a Christian business/foundaton. In the meantime don't give up hope.

I was in the exact same situation you are in a year ago.

I started a non-profit side project interview Christian business owners about how their faith impacts their businesses. It's been a tough slog, especially since I only have 2-3 hours each week to work on it.

There are TONS of businesses that you can start with only a few hours per week though (my choice was one of the harder ones...). I would highly recommend starting slowly, as the learning curve can be quite high when starting something on your own for the first time.

My website has 7 interviews (and growing) with Christian business owners, and I think you may find helpful, or at the very least inspiring: www.marketplacedisciples.com.

I have also been compiling a huge list of resources: blogs, books, websites, podcasts – all of which would be helpful for the Christian entrepreneur or someone starting a non-profit. If you're interested I can clean it up and send it to you.

My name is Asa Dunnavant and I have an idea that you might be interested in. What if there was an investment fund that distributed it's dividends and capital gains to Christian charities. Tell me what you think.
