It has been pointed out to me that my avatar is a violation of the second commandment against idolatry and images, based on the Presbyterian
Westminster Catechism (Questions 108-110). This seems to be a misapplication of the Westminster standards and a misinterpretation of the second commandment. Am I wrong? If so, how?
Your avatar is a lie (because it is not a picture of the real Jesus).
It is but wind and confusion. For it is written,
"See, they are all false! Their deeds amount to nothing; their images are but wind and confusion." (Isaiah 41:29) (NIV).
God destroys idols. For it is written...
"... I will slay your people in front of your idols. I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars... your idols smashed and ruined, your incense altars broken down, and what you have made wiped out." (Ezekiel 6:4-6) (NIV).
Those who make idol images are vain and the things that they delight in will not profit them. For it is written...
Everyone who makes an engraved image is vain. The things that they delight in will not profit. Their own witnesses do not see, nor know, that they may be disappointed." (Isaiah 44:9) (NHEB).
Flee idolatry. For it is written...
"Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry." (1 Corinthians 10:14).
How is one fleeing idolatry if they have an image or idol that they are promoting that CAN lead others to fall into idolatry? Are we not to love our neighbor? Are we are own masters looking to only please ourselves? Or are we looking to truly love others and protect them?
Do not even bring an idol into your own home unless one be as a cursed thing like it.
You shall detest such idols.
You shall abhor such idols.
For it is a cursed thing.
For it is written...
"Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing." (Deuteronomy 7:26).
