Is getting a tattoo a sin?

I wish to get a Christian tattoo ...
My wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite Bible verse and mine also; and I'm sure other conversations have arisen as a result of her having had the confidence to have it done.

"But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin." - Romans 14:23

14:23 "But he who doubts" This is a present middle participle. This refers to the over-scrupulous Christian of Rom. 14:3.

▣ "is condemned This is a perfect passive indicative from kata + krinō, meaning

1. "placed in a guilty light by contrast" (cf. Harold K. Moulton, The analytical Greek Lexicon Revised, p. 216)

2. "not condemnation, but the punishment following sentence" (cf. Rom. 5:16,18; 8:1 [cf. Moulton and Milligan, The Vocabulary of the Greek Testament, p. 328])

Here it refers to the violation of one's conscience and the resulting pain associated with the convicting of the Holy Spirit.

▣ "if he eats" This is a third class conditional sentence.

▣ "and whatever is not from faith is sin" In ambiguous biblical areas, sin is a violation of our conscience, not a violation of law. We must walk in the light we have-always open to more light from the Bible and the Spirit.

Believers' understanding of God's will (the sense of "faith" in this context) must determine their actions. It is possible for mature believers to hold different views on biblically ambiguous issues and both be in the will of God.

I used to self harm and have some very ugly scars on my left arm. I wish to get a Christian tattoo to cover it so my daughter doesn't grow up seeing these scars and not confined to long sleeves anymore. Would it be a sin to do so?
It might be better to let her see them and explain them to her confidently in Christ, in case the secret gets out anyway, and she learns from the example of her mother to hide her own scars should she ever make any. Yahweh forbid!

Seek His Way.

This would be one way, yes. This is another way to do it.

@Blood Bought 1953 Thanks for your 'Agree', above. So often it's a question of finding the confidence, isn't it?

The young lady with whom my wife and I talked, who had the whole of John 3.16 inked onto her wrist are actually seemed rather shy. But despite the shyness of the young lady an inner confidence also seemed to radiate from her. It's refreshing when Christian young ppl find ways to express their faith powerfully.

And I have a 12 year old scar on my wrist from a steak knife that reminds me every now and then why I love Yahweh more than death.

I'm amazed I can still play guitar.

Praise Yahweh!

I guess that your personal history of the grace of God is a different life experience that of the other example given. God's grace is indeed wondrous!

I want to be careful not to throw it in His face. If one verse were all I needed, there wouldn't be a Bible to bother with.

When it comes to those type of things that are not so clear cut, you have to rightfully judge it in accordance to the Word as an individual.
Some Christians might feel they have strong personal / witness reasons for having it done; others less so.

I don't know about them, but I don't trust my feelings. That's why everyone has to work it out for themselves and rightfully judge their own hearts when it comes to thing not totally spelled out. That means gather info about it, reading on what God say about it, and making an informed decision.

..it was more against idolatry, and that it wouldn’t apply to most of the tattoos today.
Some ppl today are motivated to witness with an inked Bible verse, Christian fish sign <><. The previous verse also seems to say about not trimming one's beard; do preachers shave? The context of Old Testament Jews in the land under the law and New Testament believers is distinct.

Instead of 'might feel', I guess I could also have said instead 'are convicted', etc.

I suppose the fact is among Christians there is likely to be a wide variety of ideas about this very widespread preference and practice. FYI:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

PS" So what would you think of something like a simple, small Christian fish sign <>< on a wrist or foot or whatever?

Simple as in unobtrusive.

No matter if its big or small, "christian" or "non-christian", God will know the heart.
