Hi Galatea, if you're looking for forums that are similar to this one, but are about books, I've had some luck doing internet searches for "book forum" and have found some sites that way. I don't have any particular recommendations since I'm not a regular on any of them and just pop in to read when I'm in the mood, but most populated tend to be on the first page of the search, so it could help to visit a few of the links and see if they are what you are looking for.

For Goodreads specifically, it helps to join one or more of the clubs based on topics that interest you and they will usually have "book clubs" in which everyone reads one or two books each month and discusses it, and those are also set up similar to forums rather than all the general social media connectional stuff.

Does anyone know of any websites where people talk to each other about books? I am on Goodreads to inventory my books, but entirely too stupid to understand the social aspect of the site. I find it unwieldy.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has any suggestions.

Well, Galatea, from what I can tell, it looks to me like it's going to be tough finding a website which cadres to your particular literary interests. I did find this website [booktalk.org], BUT I don't know that it's exactly the kind of thing you're wanting.

So, if discussing books of fiction is something you enjoy, it might have to be something you do locally in your own town or city, perhaps through some proxy club affiliated with a local library.

Of course, you could also persist in trying to round up individuals here who will discuss books with you ... the caveat is that you also might need to ask them to commit to the discussion before commencing. That way, you don't have happen what transpired a few months back when you tried to read and converse over "The Scarlet Letter" (which just happens to be one of my favorite books.) But, I know you tried, and the people seemed to dissappear before you even got half way through the book. Am I right? :dontcare:

Peace,

I went to one meeting of a book club in our city, but not much came of it. Everyone made one comment, and that was that. There was no real conversation.

Thank you for the link, I will have to check out the site.

It was my fault the discussion about The Scarlet Letter quit half way through reading the book. I dropped the ball as I was sad the person I wanted to read and discuss the book, changed his mind and did not enter the discussion. So I was rather selfish, as usual.

I doubt people would want to try again as my track record with online book clubs is pretty lousy.

I did not know The Scarlet Letter was one of your favorite books. I liked it very much when I read it in high school, but had not reread it as an adult.

Thanks for your post and suggestions, and always being very kind.

I can imagine that local books clubs might not be the most popular thing with a lot of people.

Whatever happened, I remember I was pretty close to joining in the discussion for that book, but ... then the participants all disappeared. ^_^ And I thought, "What?!"

From what I could tell on my side, it didn't look like it was your fault. But, being that this is a public forum, its always hard to tell who is doing what much of the time.

Oh yeah. It's been one of my favorites since high school.

Thanks for your post and suggestions, and always being very kind.

You're welcome, Galatea. If at some point you think you might want to try another book discussion here on CF. I'm always game. I think it'd be interesting.

Peace,

There were not many people there, and it felt kind of strange, like everyone was afraid to speak up, and get into a conversation. I was disappointed, I had pictured it like book clubs on tv with people elaborating about some literary topic.

I kind of dropped the ball, and lost motivation since the one person I wanted to participate changed his mind.

I did not know you were about to join the discussion.

I will attempt to start another one, here. What are your interests? I read anything.

... in that discussion, I noticed that it seemed you were the only one putting in a strong effort to get into the social/psychological nuances of the setting and characters.

I mainly read non-fiction (philosophy, theology, science, etc.), BUT I do enjoy science fiction or fantasy, whether it be classic or not, and I'll even wade knee-deep (maybe waist-deep) into a good classic like the Scarlet Letter. However, I'm also open to exploring other genres of fiction. Just be warned ... if I'm going to discuss a book, I'm going to really discuss it, like one would in a college classroom. ;)

What genres are within your literary interests?

I thought the Lutheran guy, Firedragon, had some interesting things to say.

It has been a while since I was in college, so I will endeavor to keep up.

I don’t read a lot of philosophy or religion. The nonfiction I read is generally history. This does not mean I would not read it, I just haven’t.

I don’t read much contemporary writing. I like classic literature best.

I am really open to reading anything, to be very honest. Thanks for the conversation. I’ll make a book club post soon and see if you are interested and have time.

Sounds good. Let me know what you'd like to do (...because I need a break from all of this debate stuff I've been doing in apologetics, and a discussion over a good book of fiction would be a nice alternative for a while.)

Don't worry, I'm not going to try to talk over anyone's head. The aim is for a discussion to be enjoyable, but at the same time, I'd like for it to be substantive. None of this where situation where someone reads five chapters and then comments on it all with a mere two or three sentences.

I don’t read a lot of philosophy or religion. The nonfiction I read is generally history. This does not mean I would not read it, I just haven’t.
No problem. I'm flexible, and I'm open to hearing about what interests other people, too.

Ok. I'm sure we can find something that everyone will enjoy reading.

OK. Sounds good, Galatea!
