Talk to God when you feel the need... Don't see prayer as some kind of obligatory work you have to do every day... See it as the opportunity to talk to the important One in all existence...

If your in distress call out to him and express your distress..
If your experencing great Joy then share it with Him..
If your in doubt and don't know what to do tell Him about it..

Talking with God is talking with God.. Don't turn it into some dead works.. God knows when people are being fake and shallow...

I've heard people say you need to set aside time to talk to Him every day though? I am confused.

Yes you have heard people say this....

Is Christianity about following people or following the Word of God?

It's just someone reading the Bible, like a book on tape. I am alone when I listen to it. It's easier for me that way for some reason. Whenever I try to read the Bible I can't concentrate. Thank you for the post. :)
I myself have listened to part of the Bible on CD while driving. It was from the Psalms. :)

To get closer to God, I am listing to my Audio Bible every night. And I try to pray every day, but sometimes I don't have anything to talk to God about other than thanking Him for things and how much He's done in my life. What can I do?

Gosh, I think you're doing great.
Friendship isn't always talking. It's listening, singing, laughing, weeping. God is not stoic. If we treat him as unable/unwilling to laugh, speak, weep... then he can hardly do those things with us because of our belief. (It's just like when someone doesn't have confidence in us. makes it harder for us to function.)

Believe that He has the ability and yearning to relate to you in this way and He will. It will turn some of your devotional times into amazing experiences. It will jazz it up a bit so it's not always the same. :)

You're doing great.

There are already so many good replies to your situation on here. I feel it's almost unnecessary to add anything, but one thing I do see that I haven't really heard mentioned yet, is your faithfulness. I just want to encourage you, in saying that you're doing better than most. Many "Christians" aren't setting aside a time to talk to their Creator. You're setting aside time every day. Keep on going!
Even when you feel all talked out, and feel you have nothing to say just have faith that God is working behind the scenes, and bends His ear down to you every time you go to Him in prayer. Every time you pray sincerely, no matter how lengthy or short, know your prayers are rising up as a sweet fragrance to the Father.
I don't know you personally, but I'm believing for the Lord to revitalize your time of communion with Him. He is a faithful God, and will honor your sincerity to meet Him and to strengthen your prayer time. I've knelt down to pray many times at a altar thinking God, what am I even doing? With no words on my heart to say, I would just thank Him for being gracious to me.
All I can say is remain faithful, and trust Him. Keep praying, and letting your roots grow deeper in Him.
Praying for you! <3

Oh, my... I'm thinking, wow, hearing your thanksgiving must bring great joy to God! That's a beautiful way to pray. You know, since your pray is a conversation between you and God, why don't you just ask Him what to should talk about, and see what He says...

BTW- I love listening to the Bible on my ipod, too! :)
