• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

non-weight bearing exercise such as warm water exercise or swimming, but only with a doctors approval first.....

you must be gentle with yourself and do what you are able to do without aggravating your knee.

ask for a referral to a registered dietician for medically sound guidance, that is very important.

ask the RD for any helpful info on support groups or cooking classes

losing weight is only temporary, as the real goal should be life style change, and to keep that for life.

G-d bless you and keep you on your journey!

I've been vegan for a while and have lost weight while also gaining health. I suffered from chronic back pain due to being overweight and have found that turmeric (the root more so than the powder) has helped a lot as well as soy products with inflammation. Plus, eating more nuts and seeds offers better calcium sources and absorption in my experience.

Salads can certainly help with weight loss; the challenge is to discipline oneself not to eat a lot of other things as well as salads. :)

please give some ideas to lose weight. I have arthritis in my knee. thanks
Well the basic idea behind weight loss is eating less calories than your body expends during the day. I always think diet is 90% of a weight loss plan, exercise being the other 10%. Check with your doctor to see what you can do; what joints are affected, what range of motion gives you problems, then you can see what exercises are appropriate and won't agitate your condition.

Sorry for the vague answer, but try and get your diet correct with fruits/veggies/essential fats, see how many calories (estimate) you expend each day, and take it from there :)

I'd also like to throw in my hat for veganism. Never thought I could make the switch, but it happened 4 months ago in June 2017, and I've been feeling downright euphoric at times. What's more is my increased energy and reduced joint pain allowed me to start walking around my lake almost every day.

Another indispensable tool I found was CRON-O-Meter: a website that allows you to record everything you eat in a day and see all of the micro and macro nutrients you're actually consuming. Through careful monitoring, this allowed me to reduce my sodium and saturated fat intake as well as meet my daily requirements of fiber, folate, calcium, potassium, Vitamin D, etc.

I have lost 52 pounds since July 1st of this year. Your knees will be an issue because one thing that you need to do is some exercise to increase your metabolic rate. That aside some tips... try intermittent fasting. Essentially, have a 6 hour window within which you eat and fast the rest of the day. It isn't as hard as it sounds. :) Also, >>NEVER<< eat at night... NEVER. 6:00PM at the latest. We need time to allow our bodies to burn the food away and when we eat late into the night it just turns straight to fat. There are more things I do.... certain foods I avoid, etc.

Try intermittent fasting (between 12-16 hours fasting) and high fat low carb low protein diet. Keep your "high carb" diet for dinner (you want to spike your insulin at night)...a good meal is 5-6 chicken wings (with skin) sauteed (not fried) in lard (vitamin d), guacamole using 2 avocados, and a bunch of kale sauteed in the left over oil of sauteing the wings.

Basically, you will be eating 2 meals without any snacks in between.

But most importantly, get rid of any vegetable oils, gums, heavy metals (such as dough conditioners) etc. Try to eat WHOLE FOODS. Anything that says Sunflower, cottonseed, olive oil etc get rid of. Coconut oil (non hexane processed is OK). Make sure to understand how these products are processed, it is very important.

My meals are below (athlete):
5 egg omelet + large amount of spinach all sauted in a lot of butter
1x tea with full fat goat milk for breakfast
Lunch I will usually skip
1x tea with full fat goat milk for afternoon
Dinner I will have usually 6 chicken wings with 2 avocado guacamole + tons of kale sauteed in the left over lard from the wings

I keep it the same for 5 days and for the other 2 days, i mix it up (still low carb)

Respectfully... while I realize that some things work for some and not others and that this might work for you... most people cannot handle the amount of saturated fats you are suggesting. There is no nutrition in what you are eating almost at all, save for protein and it is protein with excessive amounts of saturated fats. Lard? Wings?

I will leave this thread with this.... some animal proteins are fine but mainstream and alternative medical sources will tell you to be lean on the animal protein. Get additional protein from plants... the same place the animals get their from.

On July 1st I was 265 pounds, my BP was averaging 150/100, and my testosterone level was 179. Without ANY meds I have lost 52 pounds, my BP averages about 118/72, and my testosterone is now 439 and probably higher since I took the test about 2 hours after it releases in the body.

Some good advice on the thread and some I don't agree with as much.

In general, intermittent fasting can work quite well to utilize fat stores as energy and is a good strategy to utilize.

The length of the fast, does not have to be as long if you are someone who is very physically active and 12 hours would suffice. If you are more sedentary, than 16 hours is what you should shoot for.

In essence, the less physically active you are, the more crucial what you put in your mouth becomes. The more active you are, you can get away with a bit more in regards to diet.
