Wow! Most of my Bible study has been new testament, but sometimes it's easy to forget how relevant the old testament can be!
Hi Seraphin, welcome to the forum, it's a great place to be with lots of Christian fellowship.
We work our way through Proverbs every month and it always seems fresh and new!
This is a verse that speaks to me

4 Wise words are like deep waters;
wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.

isn't it a beautiful verse and soooo true!

This is an un-changing, immutable truth. He IS our Rock and Strong Tower, and our refuge.

Proverbs 18:

In verse 3 there is an unusual word that i have never seen anywhere before. I understand it is of Latin origin. The word is "ignominy".

Ignominy = disgrace; dishonor; public contempt; shameful or dishonorable quality or conduct. (It's associated with "ignoble" = of low character; mean; base )

This verse appears to be saying that this is the legacy of the wicked.

Tragic.

the NKJV says for verse 23
23 The poor man uses entreaties,
But the rich answers roughly.

it all says the power of the tongue is so great...

I think of Psalm 141
3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips.

This is also quite profound. God bless all those who have spoken words like this to me...they are literally "words of life", unctioned by our God Himself, through His faithful vessels:

Proverbs 18:

Arrogance: the root of all evil.

"Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility." ~Pro 18:12

iu
Whoa! God has THAT right, doesn't He? When He repeats again and again how "pride" and "arrogance" and "haughtiness" are, bottom line, the "root" of all evil. It was the "starting point" of Lucifer's sin that was found in his heart. This was the sin that is the foundation for all sins that "grow" from this "root" of sin. This of course, includes jealousy and envy. Lucifer was "jealous" of God. This stemmed from the root of pride, that very sin that was "found in him". THIS was the downfall of Lucifer, as described by Jesus Himself:

"And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." ~Luke 10:18

The "remedy", as is written in God's Word, is: "humility".

Humility is the core of what is present in a heart, soul, and mind, that "fears the Lord."

Humility is merely bowing one's will before God's will, and thus acknowledging that HE is God Almighty, and we are NOT. It's acknowledgement that HE is Creator, and that we are the "created".

Humility, stemming from the "fear of the Lord", is the antithesis to arrogance, which is the "fruit" of the root of pride.

8 The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,
And they go down into the inmost body.

This is such a good way of looking at things, with the accent on junk food these days, don't you think?

It reminds me of this:

"It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment." ~Proverbs 18:5

And this:

This comes to mind as well. May God grant us wisdom, DISCERNMENT, and clarity to recognize those very tricky wolves in sheep's clothing, and may we never have or develop or turn a "blind eye" to them or get caught up in defending these wolves in sheep's clothing, amen?
