In the Bible angels appear to people in unpredictable and various ways. From a casual reading of Scripture, a person might get the idea that angelic appearances were somewhat commonplace, but that is not the case. Likewise, in our society there has been increasing interest in angels, and it would seem that angelic appearances are normal and common today. Angels appear in every religion, and generally seem to have the same role of messenger. In order to determine whether angels appear today, we must first get a biblical view of their ancient appearances.

The first appearance of angels in the Bible is in Genesis 3:24, when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. God placed guardian angels, or cherubim, to block the entrance with a flaming sword. The next angelic appearance is in Genesis 16:7, about 1900 years later. Hagar, the Egyptian servant who bore Ishmael to Abraham, was instructed by an angel to return and submit to her mistress, Sarai. Abraham was visited by God and two angels in Genesis 18:2, when God informed him of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The same two angels visited Lot and instructed him to escape the city with his family before it was destroyed (Genesis 19:1-11). The angels in this case also displayed supernatural power by blinding the wicked men who were threatening Lot.

When Jacob saw angels (Genesis 32:1), he immediately recognized them as the army of God. In Numbers 22:22, an angel confronted the disobedient prophet Balaam, but Balaam did not see the angel at first, although his donkey did. Mary received a visit from an angel who told her that she would be the mother of the Messiah, and Joseph was warned by an angel to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to protect them from Herod’s edict (Matthew 2:13). Often when angels appear, those who see them are struck with fear (Judges 6:22; 1 Chronicles 21:30; Matthew 28:5). Angels deliver messages from God and do His bidding, sometimes by supernatural means. In every case, the angels point people to God and give the glory to Him.

Modern reports of angelic visitations come in a variety of forms. In some cases, a stranger makes a statement or does something which prevents serious injury or death, and then mysteriously disappears. In other cases, a winged or white-clothed being is seen momentarily, then is gone. In both situations, the person is often left with a feeling of peace and assurance of God's presence. This type of visitation seems to agree with the biblical pattern as seen in Acts 27:23. Another type of visitation which is sometimes reported is the “angel choir” type. In Luke 2:13, the shepherds were visited by a heavenly choir as they were told of the birth of Jesus. Some people have reported similar experiences in places of worship. This experience seems to stretch the model, as it typically serves no purpose other than an emotional high. A third type of visitation is the physical feeling. Elderly people have often reported feeling as though arms or wings are wrapped around them at points of extreme loneliness. God is certainly the God of all comfort, and Scripture (Psalm 91:4) speaks of God covering with His wings. This may well be an example of that covering.

God is still just as active in the world as He has always been, and His angels are certainly still on the job. Just as they protected God's people in the past, we can be assured that they are guarding us today. Hebrews 13:2 instructs us, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” As we obey God's commands, it is quite possible that we may encounter His angels, even if we do not realize it. In special circumstances, God allowed His people to see His unseen servants, so they would take heart and continue in His service (2 Kings 6:16-17).

While we can be encouraged by this knowledge, we must also heed the warnings of Scripture: there are fallen angels who work for Satan who will do anything to subvert and destroy us. Galatians 1:8 warns us to beware of any “new” gospel, even if it is delivered by an angel. Colossians 2:18 warns us against the worship of angels. Several times in the Bible, when men bowed down before angels, those beings firmly refused to be worshiped. Any angel who receives worship, or does not cause glory to be given to God, is an imposter. Second Corinthians 11:14-15 clearly states that Satan and his angels disguise themselves as angels of light in order to deceive and lead astray anyone who will listen to them.

We can certainly be encouraged by the knowledge that God's angels are at work, and in special circumstances, we might even have one of those rare personal visitations. Greater than that knowledge is the knowledge that Jesus Himself has said, “Surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Jesus, who made the angels and receives their worship, has promised us His own presence in our trials.

I have seen angels several times. But only when I've prayed for help for others in difficult circumstances. Once, I was the only person around someone who was threatening to jump from a window. When the angel arrived, there was such a pervading sense of peace in the whole place it was almost palpable. The person didn't jump, thank God. They calmed down immediately.

Angels have never spoken to me, and for that matter, I've never even seen their faces.

I knew a man named Steve who was paralyzed and lived in one of those polio type camps in the depression. One night in the midst of his trials he had an angel pick him up and coddle him like a baby. Having been healed he left that type environment. Every time you would see the man he would rehearse the story in the ears, and then make a gesture like a mother coddling her baby as he told it!

I certainly believe angels are as active as they ever have been.

Do they appear? Maybe sometimes.

I think they can often do what is necessary without being seen. If they need to be seen, they could be. They might not be identifiable as angels though. Or if necessary, they could be. All of these are possible. :)

One thing we need to remain aware of though is the warning that Satan can appear as an angel of light. Deception is always possible, so the fruit of any encounter needs to be carefully discerned (and sometimes it can't be right away).

But yes, I think angels are actually quite active in ways we might not even realize. Thank God for them, and for God's mercy in sending them. :)

Angels, messengers sent by YHWH, certainly have been doing all that YHWH appointed them to do.

More often in this world, people see the dis-obedient angels/ visions/ apparitions.
These evil appearances are much much more common on earth,
even when they occur to assemblies or religious people.

Thus test always. If 'they' reject Jesus the Messiah who came in the flesh,
or if they oppose/contradict YHWH'S WORD (SCRIPTURE),
know that they are not of YHWH.

I would love to see my Guardian Angel.
As would I. My guess, though, is that if he and I ever meet on this side of the veil, some serious craziness must be going on so I can't imagine it would be a pleasant meeting.

I've had two experiences with what I believe were angels. The first was while I was resting in the afternoon lying on my bed about 30 years ago. I was in that state where you are not asleep, but not fully awake. I could hear the TV audio, see the room and hear sounds from outside, but was in a very restful state. Suddenly there was a figure in the shape of a human dressed in a bright white robe standing at the foot of the bed. I could see the face and the entire figure was bright. I was able to converse with the being, but not by speaking. The being spoke but I just heard a voice in my head. Afterwords I didn't retain much of a memory of it all but what I could recall was that the being said it only spoke this way, with the mind, and was an angel and was not male or female. I know I was told other things, but to this day I can't remember what, but I do know whatever I was told, it caused me know I was not having a hallucination. Later, the more I thought about it, but still not able to remember, it did come to me that the being was my guardian angel and the name Polarius came into my mind.

The 2nd is a longer story. My wife and I were traveling by car after a long day. We still had a fairly long drive to get to a motel in a small town in Maine for the night en-route back to Michigan. It became very dark and we were on an old state road that was very hilly and curvy. I was tired and having a hard time driving due to fatigue, it being very dark and the road as it was. Some headlights showed up in my rear view mirror and a car came rapidly up close behind me. I was traveling about 50 mph because I was tired and on a strange hilly, curvy road. So I slowed and let the car pass. But instead of rapidly going on down the road, once the car got a ways in front of me it slowed and began to match my speed. Between my headlights and the lights from that car, I could see much better. This continued for the next hour or so, and as we went through a couple small towns, that car made every turn we needed to take to get where we were going and even slowed up to make sure I caught up when I had to stop for a stop sign or a traffic light. My wife and I both began to wonder what in the world was going on, as it became obvious it was like the car was our guide. Oddly, it did not cause us to became wary or afraid. We kept remarking to each other about this. Finally, some time later we went through another small town and we saw the motel sign up ahead where we were going. The "guide" was still in front of us and when we got near to the parking area off the road, that "guide" car put on it's turn signal and pulled in an stopped in front of the office. I pulled up near by and got out and headed to the office. I could see 3 people sitting in the front seat of the "guide" car and it sat there with the lights on and idling. When I went into the motel office, one of the figures, a younger man got out and followed me into the office. I turned and looked at him and he looked at me and gave me a large smile and nodded and turned around left the office and got back into the "guide" car and it backed out and drove away. To this day, my wife and I believe we experienced the care of angels, 3 of them.

When angels came to visit Lot neither the men of Sodom nor Lot recognized them for what they were.

So that "can happen"

Heb 13:2 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
