Oh no. I love Tom Petty. He's of my grandfather's generation, but an anthem of my own childhood was his song. I've had significant health issues since infancy, and during an especially challenging hospitalization when I was nine a music therapist began to work with me to develop coping mechanisms. She'd suggested having a song that would be like my personal motto. I chose this:

The song feels like a source of comfort and strength, of a precept to follow, on a day of national sorrow.

Wow. I would have guessed that he was much older.

So did I.

I was hoping to get to see him. By all accounts, his band is/was great, and his engineer is something of a legend.

For anybody who's interested, the HBO documentary The Defiant Ones features Tom Petty several times during the parts about Jimmy Iovine's early career (Iovine produced some of Petty's albums, including his duet with Stevie Nicks). There are some really funny moments where they contrast Petty's laid back artistry against always-hyper Iovine's unabashed commercialism.

FunFact: Petty did the voice of Lucky, Luanne's redneck boyfriend on the show King of the Hill.

He hasn't passed yet, but the report was that he had no brain function so...

TMZ retracted their statement. The news outlets jumped the gun on this.

Yeah, the news sites are backtracking. Let's hope for the best.
