Would you kiss the hand of Christ, or do you think perhaps you may have a knee jerk reaction to kissing anyone's hand? (This may be just an American thing.)

Forgive me...

If you're referring to kissing the hand of a priest then yes it does bother me and yes it's probably more of an American thing.

It's not a requirement. After having done it for several years, I begin to see how my mindset has changed on the subject. At first, you can't get away from the idea that you're kissing the hand of a man. I don't see it that way at all anymore. Now I am kissing the hand of Christ. My knee jerk reaction is gone and I feel I would behave better in Christ's presence for having had the opportunity to practice this short liturgical movement. ^_^

Forgive me... :liturgy:

Is a priest saying Kiss the hand of Christ? Then wanting everybody in church to kiss His own hand?
Does ortodox priests get married?
What does the wife think about it in case they are married?
In case they are not married I suppose they really want a kiss, maybe what they want is a wife?
Well that was my thoughts but really the thought of kissing a priests hand and trying to pretend it is Jesus, well, I can hopefully try not to laugh out loud. But I might smile and shake my head and think, priests should be allowed to be married like other folks and there would be less scandals.

I got a little laugh out of that... yes, our clergy marry.

Forgive me...

Well good for You, does Your priests wives also go and ask the congregation to kiss their hands :) or are they more... reluctant to handkissing. I suppose some might not be satisfied with kissing only the hand, they might have no rings left and have druel up their elbows. I mean no harm, I come from a place where we shake hands and not kiss hands so I am simply curious.

Yes. I have kissed the cheeck, forehead, hands..given hugs, fed and clothed..
I've been in the trenches, walked for miles to find the lost, given the coat off my back to the needy, looked into the eyes of the forgotten.
Disciples will go to the end of the earth to follow Christ.

No, the wives don't get hands kissed. :) Some people have germ-a-phobia too...

So, how do you think you might act at the throne of God, and your are allowed to approach... and the greeting is "with a kiss of peace"...

Perhaps we won't be reluctant?

Forgive me...

Welcome to CF and GT. I am a former Baptist myself!

Great to hear you are doing the work of God. I think that is exactly what he desires from us. May we all be found praying and doing HIS will.

Forgive me...

You know sir, God the Father is alright and I hope I meet Him again. But pretending a priest is Christ is slightly a serious matter for me. I tend to see hungry beggars on the street as Christ instead...

I'd kiss the hands or feet of Christ. No question.

Though this does remind me of the Mary of Bethany who anointed Jesus' feet with nard in Matthew 26:6

Perhaps it slips by you that our corporate worship together is a training ground.

I guess we are pretending, but it is more serious than play.

Would you bow? Would you come to your knees? How do you think we might react in this "less than awake" state where we will encounter HIM next? Will our physical habits betray us?

Forgive me...

I think it is good of OrthodoxyUSA to tell us that some priests marry. Hang in there. Maybe other priests can learn that it is a good thing too. Also all churches are different so it is not always easy to know what is expected in a new church in a part of the world one has still not discovered. Still I think christians around the globe will meet in heaven so we better get to learn each others habits in church on earth already.

I would kiss the hand of 'Jesus'.
Sounds scriptural to me:

Psa 2:12
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way,
For His wrath will soon be kindled.
Blessed are all they that take refuge in him.

But no, not the Pope's ring.......but then again, I might be inclined to if I actually met the him.

How about greetings others members of the holy assembly with a kiss?

Rom 16:16
Salute one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ salute you.
1Co 16:20
All the brethren salute you. Salute one another with a holy kiss.
2Co 13:12
Salute one another with a holy kiss.
1Th 5:26
Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.

An open heart. You make me smile. Hang in there... that's funny too. The Orthodox Church that I was baptized into became a Church in the year 38ad. So, hang in there is kind of funny... well, at least to me.

First experience with any of The Orthodox Churches? It happened one day for me. And thank you for your kindness.

The Orthodox Churches never forbade marriage of clergy.

They do have a policy on Bishops, but it's for the practical reason that most of them were Monks to start with and not just clergy. I do know at least one Bishop that is a widower.

Forgive me...

No can do.

I believe if I follow the Holy Spirit the rest of my days, my recognition of Christ in myself will grow. When I meet Christ He will be so familiar to me, like running into the arms of my father, I will be home where my soul belongs.
He will know me like His child that has returned.
He is the greatest love I know. He lives in us...how could we feel fearful?

Don't Orthodox traditional kiss the ring of their Bishops? I had assumed it was a sign of the Peace of Christ as well as respect for the Episcopate?
