Dear jenniferdiana. In Matthew 22:35-40: Jesus tells us: The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour as thyself." In verse 40 we are told: on these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophecy. The Bible tells us: give up all selfish and unkindly words and thoughts, Love God and love thy neighbour. Neighbour is all we know and all we meet, friend and not friends. God sees our hearts, and God will Bless us greatly. Love is very catching, ask for love and then thank God and start sharing love all around you. Matt 7-7-10: God wants loving men and women and Love is stronger then anything else. God Loves us and God wants loving sons and daughters. Try this dear jenniferdiana. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

How do I find myself? Do I seek within myself? I'm so confused..its like I don't know who I am
It's actually the other way Jennifer. Seek Him and we'll find ourselves. Self-seeking will only lead to disillusionment and discontent. "For whoever wants to save his life wil lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it " (Matthew 16:25). I struggled with identity crisis and unfulfilled ambitions from 1991-97. It's only when I fully surrendered to Him that I found myself in Him and was sanctified. Even better I have begun to prosper spiritually and otherwise. I know that it's the exact opposite of what the world teaches (seeking within yourself, self-enlightenment, etc.). But with the Lord, the first are last, and the last will be first. Hope that helps. God bless child :).

I don't know..i just want to with all my being..deep down inside of me, be the person God created me to be...but when I look at all my mistakes and failures I see a worthless nobody..i don't know I guess I'll help myself grow and grow each day one day at a time and just be....

Hi @Jenniferdiana,

You have had a lot of responses, and perhaps this one is just one too many, however, I just want to give you a hug across the miles, and let you know that you are not alone.

Don't look inward, sweet-heart, look up to where Christ sits, at God's right hand, and know that you are precious in His sight. He has done all that is needful for your salvation, and is waiting, as we are, for that glorious day when we will be with Him for ever more.

Just live, looking, for His appearing, and praise God in all things. Feed on His Word and live in thankfulness and praise. For you are His Workmanship, and He is working in you, to will and to do of His good pleasure.

With love in Christ Jesus
Our risen and glorified
Saviour, Lord and Head.
Chris

If you are not sure who you are, ask your best friend; ask those who love you. DON'T ask those who don't love you, only those who do.

They will tell you.

Even the Lord did this; he asked his friends; 'Who do you say I am?'

If it is good enough for him, then it is good enough for us.

That is all perfectly natural, but rest assured, that is now how the Lord sees you. He does not see any mistakes or failures; just paths to growth and maturity.

Seek ye first the kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. If you are a child of the kingdom, then you are a GOD-GEM, plucked out of this world because this world is not your home, Heaven is. Therefore, seek HIS kingdom, and HIS righteousness, and you will only discover, you are much more than what you thought you could ever be.

I would suggest that you stop looking for yourself. Look for the Lord. And perhaps this is the best clue I can give you: Pray constantly (1 Thess 5:17).

How do I find myself? Do I seek within myself? I'm so confused..its like I don't know who I am

As a youth I was a compliant child and went along with everyone because I had no clear opinion of my own. When I graduated high school I left home completely so I could determine what I really liked and disliked. That time made a huge impact on my life. I followed the advise of Robert Frost, whose poem, The Road not Taken, concludes with his taking the path few walked upon.

People say find your self in God, but I think that is useless advise. I understand their meaning but it does not help you. God is good. So good that he makes what he designed us for to be our greatest pleasure and joy. What we are most passionate about is what He created us to do.

In my case, I was a high school gymnast. When I left home I stopped doing gymnastics for 3 years. But I noticed my body became sore from not training. So I found a college gym where I was allowed to work out and began coaching for revenue. However, my logic said, If I am going to train, I should get paid to perform. So I joined a circus and began performing on stage - all this as a non-Christian. I discovered that my sport gymnastics was impractical on stage so I studied partner gymnastics and found a Russian coach to train me. As it turned out, he was a messianic Jew who led me to Christ when I was 32.

As a new born again believer, I asked the Lord what he wanted me to do. A prophet said the Lord wanted me to teach the Bible. I thought, Great, but how do I make my living? One night coming home from coaching, I lay in bed with my eyes closed. I had a mental image of Jesus in a long white robe running down a tumbling platform performing a round off, back handspring, back layout. I thought the sight was hilarious. Then I saw an image of Jesus smiling at me and he spoke to my heart, Teach gymnastics, it is good for children.

The irony of the story is that I thought I had to become a professional minister, so I went to Bible school to become ordained. While there I read Watchman Nee's "Spiritual Man" and realized that anything I did that was not led by the Spirit was a work of the flesh and caused more harm than good, so I graduated, became ordained and walked away from professional ministry and resumed coaching which was His will for me all along. It is what I loved doing.

Don't listen to the religious people who don't actually walk with the Lord discourage you and say that the heart is desperately wicked, therefore don't listen to your heart. What hogwash. If you are born again, the Lord dwells in your heart. Is the Lord desperately wicked? No! Also, the plan of your life is written in your heart. As a youth I followed my heart and it was the will of God, and I did not know the Lord at the time.

Sorry. I don't really know how to explain how I feel ..its difficult in some way

first and foremost, before you can find yourself, know this...God loves you no matter what stage in your life you are in right now...then from realizing His love for you, you can begin the journey of finding who you are...and you will know who you are because you are uniquely you, certain things will make you happy or sad, passionate or discouraged...take a deep breathe and know that you are here for a purpose, not an accident, and look around you, the people in your life, the ones who break you and the ones who build you up, your experiences in the past, lessons learned and regrets, they shape you and yet God gives you the freedom to follow the unique leadings he has placed in your heart, it's an adventure...❤

I'm gathering from reading through the responses that you're a believer.

Are you asking about finding your purpose - why you're here and what you're supposed to do?

Or, do you mean who you are as a Christian?

Do you mind me asking how long you've been a Christian? Do you go to church? What kind of fellowship do you have?

I think I understand where you're coming from, but I don't want to just throw generalities or some kind of Hallmark card answer at you.

JEnnifer:

You have two parts: There is your personality, which is mostly something you don't choose (although you can develop it), and then there is your character which you get to decide on.

For your personality/temperament, I suggest you google the MBTI test, find out your profile, and then spend some time learning about it. You might even go to the Personality Cafe website and find others that have the same profile to chat with. It's not really the same thing as like astrology. Astrology is based on a random star sign. This is based on questions that you yourself have answered.

As far as character goes, you are what you choose to be. For example, maybe I have multiple desires, some bad, some good. Maybe I even have multiple reasons why I do something, some reasons noble, other reasons selfish. I am what I choose to be. I can change who I am. So maybe last week I chose to be a selfish jerk. This week I can choose to be a child of God, forgiven and walking by grace.

You can do it! I will pray for you! I would recommended surrounding yourself with positive Christians who want the best for you! Just know that it isn't abnormal to feel this way, you are just in a low season, you will get out of this stronger than before! God bless you!

I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time, and I will definitely be praying for you.

There are three things you need to consider: Who God says you are, how you were made, and why you are here.

You'll know who you are by knowing Whose you are.
God has said a number of things in the Bible about who we are as believers. Here are some lists which include the Bible verses. Who Does God Say That I Am?
Here's Who You Are

There's a very real God and a very real Devil. The enemy wants you to believe that you are what you do/have done or what has happened to you. If we buy into this lie then we start believing that we are the sin we do or the sin that has been done to us. Every time you sin in the same way or a different way he's right there to remind you that you sinned because of who you are. We spend time trying to change what we do to try and change how we see ourselves, but changing what we do doesn't change who we are.

God says you are His child, you are loved by Him before you ever did anything, and that nothing you do will change how He feels about you. Once you start seeing yourself as God sees you then what you do truly comes from who you are. The enemy's main strategy for derailing you is blunted. Please take some time to read through and pray through the verses in those lists. If we can believe that the Bible is true, then we have to believe that those things are true - regardless of what anybody says about you. It only really matters what God has said about you.

How you were made.
Your personality is definitely part of who you are. The encouragement that someone gave to take a personality test is a good one because it'll help you understand why you like, do, and feel certain ways. I also encourage you to check out the book Sacred Pathways. The author of Sacred Pathways details a list of different ways that people encounter God and that might help you feel more like God made you. I know I feel Him the most when I'm outside in nature, while others might feel Him the most when they are in church.

God designed everything about you for a purpose - only you can do what He's got planned for you. Only you can reach certain people because of who you are. Your experiences - positive and negative - will be used in the lives of others to bring them to a saving knowledge of Him when you accept how you were made and trust that everything that has happened up until today and beyond can be used for His glory.

Why you are here.
If you haven't already read Purpose Driven Life then I encourage you to get it and read it soon. It is an excellent book for understanding why God created each one of us. The first thing to understand is that this life isn't about us. Life isn't truly about what will make us happy, but about pleasing God. We were all designed with a purpose, and we will find true fulfillment when we are actively pursuing that purpose. We were all designed for Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry, and Evangelism.

I think when you start to see yourself as God sees you (and His opinion is the only one that counts), accept the way God made you, and start to understand and pursue your purposes you will really find out who you are.

How do you lose yourself? Because I feel like I lost apart of myself already. I know we shouldn't let others define us but I feel like that's what I do.
Unlike some here ,I think we all need to get in touch with the concrete parts of our history first ,which will include our family history ,and early relatoinships . To do that we might need a councelor, or psychologist ,but if you have an older member of your family who knew you , as as a child growing up ,and whom you can talk to , try to do so .
Meanwhile pray to God asking Him to send into your life some good people, who will 'hear' you with their hearts and not throw some bible lines at you , indiscriminately .
In other words they listen sympathetically .

I completely agree. Simply saying "trust God" doesn't do much for someone in emotional turmoil. Definitely seek out a Christian counselor to talk to. You could even google "Christian Counseling" to find Bible believing counselors in your area.

Emma, you have quoted well .
"How can we love God , whom we cannot see , if we cannot love our 'neighbour' ? Too many on here ,need to repeat this daily .

God works through people who love Him and reach out to others . That is how God works ,through people .It seems non christians will need to be recruited as too many 'christians' are ignoring His
instructions .
