I also don't see what is so awful about kneeling. That seems less disrespectful that remaining seated or standing and turning their backs.

Patriotism should never be unthinking obedience and enforced ritual. That turns it into merely worship of the State. And that NEVER ends well.

Is forced patriotism really worth anything? What's the point of forcing someone to stand for the flag or national anthem if they don't in their hearts actually respect or appreciate the country or flag?

Oh, it should!

I just devised a plan for a perfect bank robbery. I simply go in, grab the money and leave. When I run into the police, I will drop a stars and striped patterned recording device transmitting the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance at maximum volume. Any patriotic police officer will have to immidately stand still with his hand over the heart.

And if they don't, and I get caught... well, I will at least have the satisfaction of seeing the President of the United States demand that these officers will be fired for disrespecting the flag, anthem, pledge or whatever other stupid nationalistic ritual you Americans can come up with.
