There are some 'Christians' that think it is wrong to forcibly stop someone from doing evil things to other people, no matter how horrible those things are. Loving God and our neighbors are the two highest laws that all other laws hang upon. Would it be unloving to stand by and not defend someone else? Even if one called the police or someone else, they'd be encouraging them to come to physical aid.

I found it interesting that Orthodox chaplains in the US military won't carry a weapon...my respect...

no American military chaplains are allowed to carry a weapon (not just Orthodox even if their faith says they can). they have always been noncombatants since their start during the Civil War

Are chaplains not allowed to defend themselves at all? I remember an AFR podcast about this where EO chaplains were different than others on this..

Oh, I misread this!

I read

No. American military chaplains are allowed to carry a weapon.

That was a bad leap on the part of my brain, I guess caused by the lowercase n in no. No wonder I wasn't understanding what you were saying. :D

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

It is not possible to live in accordance with this verse while being a total pacifist.

no, you can. we have plenty of monastic saints who have. you can defend the oppressed while being a pacifist. take a look at St Mary of Paris.
