Training and experience are done overtime and there is no substitute for either. But when things go bad, you may not have a Dr, Nurse or any other help. There are many YouTube videos that show wound care and closure you should down load some and then buy yourself a simple suturing kit and I find a piece of ...yes uncooked chicken great for suturing practice and then practice.

When you feel comfortable then get a better suturing kit for your FAK, remember not all wounds need to be sutured and so other closures need to be purchased like steri-stips and  wound glue (like super glue but medical grade, and even get a wound staple gun!

Again buy books and read them there is no substitute for a good library and  then hands on experience!

I have found some helps but there is plenty on the net while we can get it!

Staying healthy before, during, and after things go bad
March 13, 2012 By M.D. Creekmore

Being a prepper guarantees many things: you will always have a generous supply of rice and beans, you will never have an “empty” spare closet, and every bakery within a twenty-mile radius will be on “bucket alert” just for you. While most Americans are busy watching the newest reality TV circus – preppers are gearing up for what will soon be an actual reality. Economic collapse and social unrest are just a few of the possibilities.

Most preppers will have enough food, water, and defenses to get them through the rough patches of a disaster. A lot will even have a few antibiotics, bandages, and maybe even a suture kit “just in case”. However, there is one thing that no amount of money, food, or ammo can get you. It is something that I believe a lot of preppers might accidentally overlook. This one valuable, priceless thing is health. Without it, even the most highly trained survivalist will falter.

During a SHTF situation health will be even more important. Disease will be rampant, and doctors will be hard to come by. There are a few things you can add to your stockpile that will keep you healthy throughout any situation. One of the most important health preps everyone should implement into their everyday life is cod liver oil. Fermented cod liver oil is even better. It is said that the great Roman army was so strong and undefeatable because they regularly ate fermented fish sauce.

Fermented fish, especially cod liver oil, is chock full of vitamin A and D. These essential vitamins help repair and build strong bones, teeth, and skin. Vitamin D in particular has been proven to prevent many types of cancer. I was able to heal a long-standing cavity simply by adding cod liver oil to my daily routine (I know, I didn’t believe it either, but it works). Cod liver oil is also full of omega 3’s which are missing from most Americans diet, and will be in scarce supply during a SHTF situation.

There are some cod liver oils that come pre- mixed with high vitamin butter oil (which helps the body absorb the cod liver oil better). The advantages of this type of supplement are two-fold : they provide vitamins, and also the necessary fat that may be missing from ones diet during a disaster. Cod liver oil can be stored for at least two years, and does not need refrigeration. There are some interesting stories of cod liver oil healing every type of disease known to man. If you research Dr. Weston Price you can see all the studies on cod liver oil he performed, and understand why he believed cod liver oil to be the most important food for health. It should definitely be a staple in every preppers inventory.

While cod liver oil can help prevent and even reverse some diseases, there is always the possibility of an acute infection. An acute infection happens quickly, and needs rapid treatment. Many preppers stock antibiotics, and this could prove to be dangerous. Antibiotics suppress the immune system, and also kill off some of the good bacteria, thus lowering your resistance to future infections (which could turn into antibiotic resistant strains). Antibiotics surely have their place in life and death situations. However, in most cases antibiotics are much too strong, and unnecessary for most infections.

Before antibiotics, doctors commonly prescribed colloidal silver and other natural anti-bacterial/fungal remedies. These methods tend to work better, because they kill the infection while boosting the immune system. The best natural antibiotic, and the one doctors commonly prescribed before pharmaceutical antibiotics is colloidal silver. Colloidal silver has been proven to kill over 600 different types of bacteria and fungi. Colloidal silver can be purchased relatively cheap, or one can even invest in a simple colloidal silver maker. Two other great natural antibiotics are oregano oil and goldenseal. They can also be purchased cheaply and make a great stockpile antibiotic.

Another extremely important supplement to stockpile is vitamin C. Vitamin C neutralizes all types of toxins and boosts the immune system. This is especially important if your preps include a lot of canned items. It is well-known that the amount of toxic BPA in canned items has increased rapidly over the years. Vitamin C actually clears out BPA toxins which can build up after eating a lot of canned food. A person cannot overdose on vitamin C, and high doses seem to produce greater benefits. More importantly, vitamin C is necessary to prevent scurvy, which could become more common after a disaster.

Vitamin C is fairly cheap to obtain, but you must be careful about which type you choose. The typical grocery store brands tend to have additives. The best type of vitamin C is sodium ascorbate, which is a neutral form of vitamin C. The sodium neutralizes the acidity in vitamin C, so it is much gentler on the digestive system. Of course vitamin C works best as a preventative, but prevention is what we should all be aiming for. A good starting point is 1000 mg, and then increase the dose as one might feel necessary. If you would like to read a good book detailing all the studies on vitamin C, “Curing the Incurables” is a great start. The entire book focuses on the different diseases vitamin C can cure, with studies to back up the claims.

This next set of remedies is for the ladies, but guys feel free to read on. Women inherently have a lot more health issues to worry about, and a SHTF situation can turn these issues into hardships. There are several ways you can prepare for these hardships. First of all, I think every woman should have a set of at-home urine strips. A set of 100 of these strips can be purchased for under $10.00. These strips will tell you if you have a bladder infection, and they are just as accurate as the ones in the doctor’s office.

If you are prone to UTI’s two great remedies you can stockpile are D-Mannose and Uva -Ursi, both of which are natural remedies. Uva-Ursi is still commonly prescribed for UTI’s in Europe, and is very effective. D-Mannose is a derivative of cranberry, and flushes out most bladder infections. D -mannose works on 90% of UTI’s which is why I suggest Uva Ursi as well, just in case. Again, the problem with antibiotics is they kill good bacteria, making it harder for the body to fight infection. This is why women who have one UTI, tend to get into a never-ending cycle of antibiotics and more UTI’s. The body never gets the chance to build up the good bacteria.

Two more common ailments that women suffer from are yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Both can be cured with boric acid inside vegetable capsules. This was actually the standard treatment before modern medicine, and it had a higher success rate compared to antibiotics. You can buy a bottle of boric acid for a few dollars (it’s perfectly safe) and fill a size “00” vegetable capsule with the boric acid. Insert it vaginally and it will dissolve inside. You should do this for ten to fourteen days straight. This usually clears up both BV and yeast.

Another inconvenient problem women have to deal with is menstrual cramps. An extremely effective and simple remedy for this is blackstrap molasses. As simple as it sounds, one tablespoon of this liquid can cure even the most stubborn cramps. It is a well-known cure in the alternative medicine arena. Blackstrap molasses can store for several years, and the price beats over- the- counter medications.

A few other great remedies to stockpile for health are apple cider vinegar and baking soda. Baking soda is an excellent remedy for heartburn, indigestion, and gas. Just take a tablespoon in water and it usually clears up. Apple cider vinegar is another well-known natural remedy, and has been used successfully for arthritis pain, candida, overall aches, indigestion, etc. Apple cider vinegar is also used by many to increase energy levels, assist in fighting colds and flu, and to help with allergies. Both of these remedies are easy to store, and under ideal conditions can last several years .Apple cider vinegar is also an excellent hair wash and conditioner. Baking soda can be used to brush your teeth, wash your hair, and clean just about anything. So even if you don’t use these two remedies for health, they can still be highly beneficial during a SHTF occurrence.

To survive in any situation you have to be able to think clearly and move fast. You can only do this if your body is healthy and strong. All the food in the world won’t matter if your body cannot utilize it. Most of the health preps mentioned here are affordable, and can/should be used every day to boost your immune system. The better shape you are in – the better your chance of survival. Even if dung doesn’t hit the roof, you will still be better off than most Americans. Your body is a temple, and a healthy temple can withstand anything.

:::::::::::::::::::::::MEDICAL WARNING::::::::::::::::::::::::

Because it causes such intense vomiting, ipecac abusers suffer greater dehydration and electrolyte imbalances and a greater risk of kidney, liver and heart disease.

The effects of the drug are frightening enough, but the syrup itself is arguably worse. Ipecac is toxic, meant only for one-time use in real emergencies. With regular use, the toxins in ipecac build in the muscles of the body, leading to muscle wasting. The heart, most dangerously, suffers this muscle wasting greatly, and in addition to worsened symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath (common to most bulimics) ipecac users also run a greatly increased risk of complete heart failure - Ipecac abuse is deadly.

Ipecac is used in the emergency treatment of certain kinds of poisoning. It is used to cause vomiting of the poison. Only the syrup form of ipecac should be used. A bottle of ipecac labeled as being Ipecac Fluidextract or Ipecac Tincture should not be used.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

How to Make Yourself Throw Up:

Though most people can’t stand the thought of vomiting, sometimes it is necessary to purge your body of things that could be harmful. That is often why we sometimes feel sick and vomit; our bodies have something inside them that they know are bad, and the instinct is to get it out. Learning how to make yourself throw up is something that can help you during those times when you need relief from a bad meal, too much alcohol or many other problems.

Before you decide to induce vomiting, keep in mind that this can be a serious issue, and can cause injury if not done properly. If you have swallowed something you shouldn’t have or you are feeling very sick from a bad meal or too much alcohol, start by calling your poison control center. They will be able to tell you whether you can deal with the problem at home or if you need to see a doctor first.

You will also need to identify the substance that is making you sick. Do you know it was bad seafood, or too many medications, or something else that has upset your body? If you know what the cause is, poison control can help you even more. In some cases, inducing vomiting can actually make you worse.

If you are instructed to induce vomiting, you can do it in a few simple steps. However, you should only do this when it is absolutely necessary to remove something harmful from your body.
Here are the best ways to do this:

1. Try Emetics

Emetics are medicines that are designed to induce vomiting. Syrup of ipecac is one of the most common emetics. When you mix it with water and swallow it in one long gulp, or take an emetic tablet, the emetic will cause some discomfort, then make you nauseous, and then cause your stomach to contract, making you throw up.

In most cases, using emetics is a very mild way to make your body get rid of anything in the stomach. But there are some warnings to keep in mind:

Warnings: Taking syrup of ipecac can cause several side effects, including a feeling of dizziness or lightheadedness, low blood pressure, shortness of breath and a fast heartbeat. It should never be taken by children under the age of one. It should also never be used on a long-term basis, as this can lead to serious problems. Never use emetics when you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and never give them to an unconscious person.

2. Make Use of Your Finger

It might sound gross, but sometimes using your finger to active your gag reflex is the fastest way to empty your stomach. Simply push your finger to the back of your throat unti you feel the need to gag. Then push further, and you will feel an intense sensation of nausea. Remove your finger quickly, as you will likely throw up immediately. Remember to wash your hands afterward!

3. Try Mustard Solution

If you don’t have any emetics on hand, consider the mustard mixture. This can be created by mixing a tablespoon of mustard spread into a cup of warm water. The fact that it is so unappetizing means it will make you want to vomit it up. Remember to drink it very quickly. It might take 20-30 minutes for it to work.

Keep in mind that this home remedy works for some, but not for everyone. Still, it’s worth a shot if you need to get something out of your stomach fast.

4. Drink Warm Salt Water

Mix three teaspoons of salt into a 16-ounce glass of warm water, stir it vigorously, then drink it very quickly. This mixture works in the same way the mustard solution does, and might take 20-30 minutes for good effect. If it doesn’t work on its own, you can always induce your gag reflex with your fingers, which can help.

5. Try Bloodroot Herb

Bloodroot is an herb often used by Native American cultures. It is highly toxic in large doses, so remember to use only small amounts. Mix the powder with water and drink it quickly to induce nausea and vomiting.

Keep in mind that bloodroot herb is not a simple solution: It is a toxic herb and can lead to serious problems, such as tunnel vision or foot pain. High doses can prove fatal, so it is best to contact a doctor before trying this method.

6. Drink Coca Cola

Sometimes the bubbles in Coca-Cola can help remedy an upset stomach. On the other hand, drinking flat Cola – without the bubbles – can make you feel sick and want to throw up. Drink a glass of this every hour, followed by water, to help induce vomiting. This can be especially effective in cases of food poisoning.

7. Watch Someone Else Throw Up

Seeing someone else throw up can often trigger the same response in your body. Though watching someone else throw up can be disgusting, that’s the point – you need to trigger that feeling in order to do it yourself. You can find videos of people throwing up online and use this if necessary. It might not work, but if it does, it will work very quickly.

8. Use a Toothbrush

Using a toothbrush to induce vomiting uses the same principle as using your finger; you are trying to trigger the gag reflex to make yourself vomit. Wet the bristles and rub the toothbrush against the back of your tongue, right where it makes you gag. You can use this several times if necessary. Be sure to clean the toothbrush thoroughly when you’re done, or simply replace it with a new one.
What Should You Do after Making Yourself Throw Up?

After you throw up, your body will likely feel very tired. The act of vomiting dehydrates you, so you need to rehydrate in order to feel better. Drinking lots of water can help your body regain its equilibrium. Drink clear fluids that do not contain caffeine or alcohol. A few good options are sports drinks, ginger ale and clear broths. Avoid acidic drinks, like orange juice – they can upset your stomach.

After 12 hours of vomiting, you can eat solid foods such as white rice, dry toast, crackers, or bananas. You should only eat bland foods and avoid anything fatty and spicy; also if you experience diarrhea, avoid raw vegetables and fruits completely.

If you feel very sick or dehydrated, see a doctor. If the poison control center has suggested that you get to the doctor after inducing vomiting, head for the emergency room immediately afterward.

NOTE:
Find out what poison has been ingested. NEVER induce vomiting if the victim has swallowed a corrosive poison. A corrosive poison is a strong acid or alkali (base) such as dinoseb (DN Compounds). The victim will complain of severe pain and have signs of severe mouth and throat burns. A corrosive poison will burn the throat and mouth as severely coming up as it did going down.

FA Treatment for corrosive poisons: Water or milk to dilute it, if you have any and activated charcoal to help neutralize the corrosive poison !!!!!

If possible ring Poison Information:phone:13 11 26 and get to Hospital ASAP...

For the FAK:
Ipecac Syrup
Activated Charcoal powder or tablets
Airway
Detergent (to wash of poisons like pesticides etc)
Clean Water (2lt)

There is a lot of information for different poisons, but this will help! Study and down load info from the Web.

Too old attention span to read long post but imo, having snake bite kit and allergy reaction remedy is a must too. Epipen or liquid Benedryle for insect stings or bites.
And something to sew it up open wounds. I set and put back in joint 2 toes a couple years ago husband and dogs ran from the screams. But when foot turned black and went to er doctor x-rayed and said I did a perfect job setting bones and putting toes back in right direction. I just smacked the toes pointing sideways real hard and grabbed toes and pulled them really hard back straight. The foot turned black because of inside bleeding of course and was ok once color came back.

They are coming up with some great products. Just remember that some wounds will need to be sutured as the glue will not work on all wounds, and some wounds may not be able to suture or glue, but let heal naturally.

Downloading won't help if there's an EMP... all electronics will die. Get a book or print it off, better yet take some courses too!

Don't rely upon a nurse or doctor for Emergency First Aid. I found in my courses they may do fine with equipped ER rooms but without additional training they don't have a clue in the field in general.

If you're in a real emergency situation, bandaids won't mean a thing! Scratches and cuts are minor to life saving strategies... use some listerine or vinegar to cleanse them... worry about having to escape with broken bones or having major bleeding to stop... I mean, you are talking about survival here, right?

Some pretty good advice here in thread. :)

Covered too much for me though...I like things more organized (my brain trauma).

Don't rely upon medical doctors or nurses in the "wild" for first aid. Most haven't a clue unless they have gone through the same classes you have. They do fine with pull out of the wall devices and hospital room supplies, but not real 1st AID.

Buy books for what you don't know. First Aid, edible plants and their medicine, how-to of survival.

If an EMP takes out the grid, they expect 1/3 of the people to die within the first year. Do you have that much prepping ready?

Can you "make" potable water. (Remember, there is no shortage of elements from the mountains... we do not get our safe drinking water from the skies!) It needs to come from the ground up. Check out "solar still". Make sure you know how to purify your water. Can you really stock up a year's worth of filters for that canister?
(I'm allergic to iodine and bleach...but you might not be. That's what you can use if you have it...)

May I say 'cheese cloth'? It's important and you can use it for many medical reasons.

Bismol (the pink stuff) is great for any toxin ingested. It will coat the stomach walls and intestines to limit the body's uptake of it. Use it after an inducement.

Hydrogen Peroxide will induce vomitting. (The stuff in the brown bottle that fizzes upon contact with germs.) It's safe for pets also, such as if they get into a buffo frog. Just pour it down without drowning them. Barfing ensues. (Then give a little bismol).

Vinegar. Listerine. Both disinfect.
Apple Cidar vinegar works good for washing / disinfecting fruits and vegetables. (I use it all the time with store bought foods!) It removes much of the pesticides too, and helps with the poison wax with which they coat apples.

Garlic is good for headaches and other pains too!
For toothaches, dissolve an aspirin on the tooth OR place a wetted tea bag on it. Both help limit the pain.

A personal note:
I have reincorporated a non-profit [educational development inc.] On the list of videos I will make is included one on real first aid. Pray that I can accomplish all the making of these videos this year. They will be available without charge, of course! God has me heading towards a ministry for the "mobile house-less" and many have no clue how to live "off the grid" "in the wild" etc.
