No one here may be able to tell you what lack you have. But do what you do because you love GOD. Maybe sharing with others is a good thing. The Bible says - The one who gives water will also be watered.

I feel like I'm putting water in a basket full of holes with this thread.

I very rarely hear his still small voice, and so my conversations with him are rather one sided. and so I give up talking to him. just being honest

Quite an issue here. He speaks to you in His word. And the conversation is likely not one-sided. I know that He said that He will not turn aside those who come to Him. Maybe you ought to become acquainted with His ways. We do not all have the drama in our experiences as Paul or the Ethiopian eunuch had. Some of us simply go on faith in the word and works of GOD

How is this done? I accept that God loves me intellectually, but I have not recieved it into my heart. the word says the love of God is poured into our hearts by the holy spirit.

but I have asked God to pour out his love for me, but I was not suddenly overwhelmed by love.

So what practical steps can I take to recieve it?
It's a proces. You will experience the love of God as you journey through life. He protects us from evil.
Psalm 91King James Version (KJV)
91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
He loves us and care for us. You will experience His love more when you are in a low situation and only He can save you. He answer our prayers. You surely going to feel His love as you seek Him, prayer, read your Bible everyday, and have fellowship especially with born-again christians

Prayer and ask God that you be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Today I was having Bible study with my husband. Suddenly a hymns came to my mind. That's is the Spirit of God. The song was
  1. Take my life and let it be
    Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
*Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.
  2. Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
    Swift and beautiful for Thee.
  3. Take my voice and let me sing,
    Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
    Filled with messages from Thee.
  4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
    Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.
  5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
  6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
    Ever, only, all for Thee.
After singing this song we prayed. You will feel the Spirit of God if you seek, pray, sing songs of praise, read the psalms, read the Bible, have fellowship with other Christians.
Are you a born-again Christian?

his love is unconditional allegedly. therefore, if I have to "do" anything, in order to experience his love, then its conditional

My wife loves me.

Yet, to "feel" her love, ... I must interact with her, in a way that's appropriate between a husband and wife.

To feel God's love (the way you're wanting to) ... requires your interaction with Him.

Something that has worked for me in down periods ... is to get involved with genuine demonstrations of God's love to others (i.e. ministering) ... and you will feel, and be amazed by, God's love.

Note: You won't FEEL like doing this. The flesh will try and convince you that there's nothing you can gain from such a thing. But do it anyway. Put yourself into situations where the love of God is demonstrated to others ...

No, not really. Just because you have to be in the right state to experience God's love, does not mean you have to "earn" it or anything like that, it just means you are a limited and fallen creature. If you experience's God's full presence without proper preparation, it would be agony, it's described as hellfire.

:) Hi Ben.. God has already poured out his love on you... aka: his blood shed!
;) That still small voice of "God once reminded me not to trust in my emotions- rather to trust in his spirit"
It took me about fourteen days to workout what God was saying to me?
The answer:- Our emotions change according to circumstance.. God however does not change!
Have learnt that the Christian walk is not about feelings rather faith.
I hope I have helped ;)
.. be blessed ~ Paul ;-)

It's very clear to me that the OP is actually seeking God. I would be very careful what you accuse him to be. From what I have read those posts are very accusing and not of God. We, the body of Christ, are to uplift one another, especially those coming to Him! :D It's a joyful occassion!

@Ben Collyer
Don't let those sour your seeking. You have been given many good Biblical references and I don't have much more to add except to keep seeking God.
Truth be told, the seeking never stops. I'm still seeking His face after getting to know His Kingdom. I've faced many obsticles along the way, so please. Don't let anything or anyone get in your way to Him and His heart. :yellowheart:

I would study the bible, that's the only way I knew anything, I've studied it now 35 years but before that I thought God hated me.
There's nothing greater you can do with your life than study.

Here's some verses that talk about it.

Matthew chapter 4 verse 4
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
Romans chapter 1 verse 28
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

John chapter 8 verse 31,32
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, " If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
2 John
9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
Job chapter 23 verse 12
I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.

Matthew 11
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Luke chapter 21
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Romans chapter 10
17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Mark chapter 13
31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
James chapter 1
25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
James chapter 4
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Isaiah chapter 45 verse 19
I have not spoken in secret, from somewhere in a land of darkness; I have not said to Jacob's descendants, 'Seek me in vain.' I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right.
Jeremiah chapter 9
24 but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
Jeremiah chapter 5 verse 1
5 “Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem,
look around and consider,
search through her squares.
If you can find but one person
who deals honestly and seeks the truth,
I will forgive this city.

Why express all these doubts and reservations if you are truly speaking about the Great Creator GOD who can do all things good for His children? Do you think by doubting and insulting Him that He will give you the desires of your heart? JESUS said "According to your faith be it unto you".

Ben, just ACCEPT that He loves you. But it has to come from the heart, and the soul! You can't just say, "I accept Jesus." and let your life go on as it has.

The way to do this, though, is to love God!, and then begin living that love out by loving, first of all yourself, and then your neighbor as yourself. Even though almost ALL of the Protestants on these fora will disagree with me, there IS work you have to do. You have to trust God, and be obedient to His command to love Him and your neighbor as yourself.

If you think you are doing these things, then ask God to let your emotions catch up to your decision.
