Why are there so many Christian denominations?

I thought you were going back on topic! BTW, the body of Christ, i.e., the church, goes back before Peter -- all the way to Jesus.

I'm begging you: stop the propaganda.

Propaganda? Just defending the true church my dear friend!

It does go back all the way to Jesus. You are correct. And Jesus made Peter the Rock on which His church would stand!

Now, back on topic my old buddy. God bless you

Galilee63 is going on and on and on and on with his Catholic doctrine, trying to force the rest of us to read it. The topic of this thread, which he entirely ignores, is "Why are there so many Christian denominations?"

He may be our brother in Christ, but Paul wrote extensively about false teachers.

Yes I agree and Jesus warned us of false prophets who are really vicious wolves disguised as sheep. He said you can identify them by their actions. I think 724 years of torturing and executing nonbelievers is pretty relevant to this verse. I think the doctrine of purgatory which was formulated during that time is also relevant to this verse. Both the lack of scripural evidence and the actions of the men who formed it. Not to mention the attempts to prove its existence based on scriptures taken out of context. in the catechism it says 1 Peter 1:7 is evidence of purgatory. its not even close to being evidence and catholics know this. That's why nobody tries to use it as evidence anymore.

Jesus was right! Even through those years of war and murder and terror, Satan did not win! He may have won some battles but he could never win the war! Jesus is and always will be right!

The gates of hell WILL NOT PREVAIL!

I guess it just depends on who you ask. If you asked the victims of the inquisitions I'm sure they would disagree with you.

Or one of the victims of the witchcraft trials or the Anabaptist burnings...

Don't forget the people who translated the bible to common languages and distributed them. Burned at the stake.

May 26, 1782, American Colonel William Crawford marches his army towards the Ohio River, where General George Washington has charged him with attacking local Indians who had sided with the British in the American Revolution.

Colonel Crawford, a close friend of General Washington and a veteran of British military encounters with Native Americans in the French and Indian War, Pontiac’s Rebellion and Lord Dunmore’s War, had agreed to come out of retirement in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, to assist his fellow Virginian in the fight for American independence.

The expedition ended in a slow, harrowing death for Crawford. On June 6, his supply chain disintegrated and Wyandot Indians surrounded Crawford and his men. The Indians of the Ohio region were enraged by the recent slaughter of pacifist Christian Indians at the Moravian mission in Gnadenhutten, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately for Crawford, some of the perpetrators of the Gnadenhutten Massacre were among his men.

Patriots had shot the women and children of the Gnadenhutten mission from behind as they knelt in prayer on March 8, 1782. The Wyandots, under Chief Konieschguanokee (Captain Pipe), took their revenge by torturing the members of Crawford’s party. Crawford and his son-in-law William Harrison were scalped and burned at the stake; Crawford finally died after two hours of torment. At least 250 members of Crawford’s party were killed in the disastrous encounter.

So many people rely on the church to tell them the word of God instead of going to the source. I think people should study their bible then decide for themselves which church is the right one.

There is none that's right. All have gone astray, very very far away from the true Jesus

I'm not convinced that is true. Jesus said the gates of hell would never prevail against His church. So I believe that his church does still exist. It may not be a place here on earth. Perhaps a place in our heart. Just a thought.

And you, of course, are the only one who knows the true Jesus? You don't have a problem self-righteously condemning other Christians?

Because all of the folks that claim they're "listening to Jesus" aren't really hearing Jesus, and those that claim they are being "guided by the spirit" are really being guided by their human will/desires, and those that claim they're "going by what the bible says" are only going by their own interpretation of "what the bible says".

I'm just curious, where have I gone astray in my beliefs?

So many people will say that there are a plethora of denominations because people have strayed from the Word of God, yet somehow they always see their denomination's interpretation as being absolutely correct. I remember having a discussion with a Baptist friend one time who was lamenting the multiplicity of denominations, but then proceeded to tell me how wrong my denomination was because we practice infant baptism and sprinkling, have female pastors and use wine in communion. I guess he saw his interpretation as the only possible interpretation.

Baptism is a symbol of the spiritual baptism we receive from Jesus. It's not necessary for salvation. If a man alone in the desert accepts Jesus as his savior and confesses his sins and ask for forgiveness he will be saved regardless of whether he's been baptized with water. So the method of water baptism is irrelevant.

I agree - the church is all true believers. What I said was in the context of the OP, not about the Biblical church. Modern denominations are a mockery of it.

I agree with you, although the point I was really trying to make wasn't about baptism but was, rather, that people say that denominations have strayed from the Word of God except for their particular denomination.
