By dismissing it the very moment it appears, not dwelling on it, not giving it a chance to grow. If it has something to do with unforgiveness, forgive that person. Pray to God for forgiveness and ask God to take those sinful thoughts away.

2 Corinthians 10 : 5
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Imaginations in this scripture are Thoughts.

You can not stop thoughts from coming but we are responsible to give them life or not.

You give thoughts life by Speaking Them and Acting on them......HOWEVER. ... if they go uncasted down then you will begin to think about them and once you begin to think about them then you will begin to believe them and once you believe them then you will give life to them by speaking or acting on them.
This is how your enemy the devil works.

Ephesians 6 : 11
Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.
1 Timothy 6 : 12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Galatians 5:16 and Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

Romans 12:2 ....
And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God

(Get His word in you each and every day and speak His word each and every day)

4... For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to pulling down strong holds

(Begin to practice the words you speak and thoughts you think for our thoughts and words to control how we act or react and believe. Our own words do more do influence our thinking then most of everything else)

Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh

(The more you do the first two the more you will begin to walk in the Spirit and you will be amazed to say the least)

Seek God and read the Word. It won't make them disappear, but it will give you the power to flee from them.

Remember what God told us to do and rebuke the evil thoughts in the name of Jesus and saying God's commandment which forbids it.

Yes, prayer and the Scriptures are the wholesome daily elements in which the believer can live.
