Thank you for bringing up this thread. That parable is set in the 1st century at the time Jesus was preaching.
Which gate could Jesus be referring to in that story? Both Jerusalem and the Temple were still standing at the time and I still view the Rich Man as a type of Jewish High Priest.
Those who come to Jesus, both Jew and Gentile, become kings and priests

Rev 1:6
and did make us kings and priests to his God and Father, to him is the glory and the power to the ages of the ages! Amen.

I found this site interesting and it is actually helpful in studying that parable:

The Beautiful Gate of the Temple in Jerusalem | Ritmeyer Archaeological Design

One of the questions I am frequently asked is where the Beautiful Gate of the Temple was located. This gate is mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 3.2,10) as the place where the lame man was begging. After he was healed by Peter and John “he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God” (Acts 3.8).

The Nicanor Gate stood in front of Herod's Temple. It gave access from the Court of the Women to the Temple Courts. In front of this gate were fifteen semi-circular steps on which Levites sang the fifteen "Psalms of the Steps" (Psalms 120-134 of Degrees or Ascents). © Leen Ritmeyer
Entering the kingdom of heaven/God; even though I'm really, really ridiculously really, really good looking, I COUND'T GO THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL GATE!

God forced me through the narrow gate as naked as a camel! :)

Lately I've been thinking about hell as like... a vacuum of nothingness. If God can be likened to a rock, then what is evil can be likened to wind/ether which has the unmistakable quality of impermanence. Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away" (Luke 21:33)

If we sow the wind, we reap the whirlwind. Hosea 8:7 If we are not baptized by the Holy Spirit then our souls will not reside under the immovable, Almighty God. Sowing into impermanence (things of this world) we reap hell.

Matthew 7:24-27 The parable of the wise builder, instructs the faithful to build on the solid foundation that is Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:1-3
1 And you [did he make alive,] when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins, 2 wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience; 3 among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:--

I like everything you said except the, "vacuum of nothingness." part ... I feel like chains, angels, human spirits, fire, teeth, the ability to weep, lakes are all things

Hades was essentially the old Greek religion's equivalent of Hell, or the underworld, or whatever you might call it. The King James Version tends to render any reference to such places as "Hell", and that's certainly the most straightforward interpretation, but it unfortunately means that there's been little deliberation on whether these different words are truly referencing different things or not.

I believe the verse could just be a turn of phrase meaning "No force, no matter how terrible, can overcome the church", or something to that effect.
The Councils and Strategies of evil shall not prevail against the Body of Christ.

HADES in Greek literally means "UNSEEN"

The unseen realm of the dead - both good guys and bad guys

It was also the name of the god of the underworld

Hades is the main word for hell in the New Testament, also Gehenna and Tartarus are used, but less frequently

Hebrew SHEOL meant "the grave" more so than Greek Hades

Sheol Hebrew literally means: pit and NOT grave, and refers to a here and now life in the pits. gehenna literally, and figuratively, means your here and now life is a burning trash heap; literally, south and outside the city of Jerusalem. OT reference, the valley of Ben-Hinnom. The alternative is the Kingdom of Heaven(s)/God right here, right now. Sheep only! Goats suck!

Afterlife is Hades(for goats only) vs. Paradise(for sheep only). End time, "goats, 'lake of fire"': 2nd death. "Sheep, 'You follow Me"', as usual! :) Lambs book of Life--sheep only--Life, Who is Jesus, required!

"He will in no ways cast out"

What is hades?

Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

The underworld, or place of the dead. Hades is the Greek translation of the Hebrew/Jewish concept of She'ol, the abode of the dead. In Greek mythology Hades is the underworld where the dead are, it's not identical but is very similar to She'ol in concept, and so Greek speaking Jews and Christians found it easy to simply borrow the term to refer to She'ol.

In the traditional Jewish view of the time, which Jesus uses throughout the Gospels, She'ol was split into two parts, the realm of the righteous dead known as Gan-Eden ("Garden of Eden") translated into Greek as Paradeisos ("Paradise") and the realm of the wicked dead known as Ge-Hinnom ("Valley of Hinnom") not translated but transliterated into Greek as Gehenna.

Hades here speaks of the place of death. The reference to gates refers to ancient walled cities in which the gates of the city were the access point, they were also the weakest part of the city and the strength of a city is measured in the strength of its gates--if the gates fall then the city falls. Thus its speaking of the strength of Hades, the power of death itself. Christ is saying that not even the gates of Hades will be able to stand against and overcome His Church, not even the strength and power of death, Christ's people have victory over death, and nothing--not even death and Hades--can prevail against His people.

The Church will endure, the Church will stand, in Christ she is more than a conqueror, and greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. The sure and certain foundation of the Church is Jesus Christ, He is the chief cornerstone, and nothing can withstand against that which is built on the most surest foundation.

Dear W2L. You ask Gates of what? The answer is Gates of hell, with no light or love, being without God for evermore. Jesus told us in Matthew 22: 35-40: " The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour as thyself." On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters.
The Bible tells us: Give up all thy selfish and unloving wishes and wants, Love God with all thy mind, and treat thy neighbour as you would like to be treated. Love is very catching, and God wants loving men and women. In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told: " Ask and you shall receive." We ask for Love and Joy, and Compassion, then we thank God and share all love and joy, and compassion with our neighbour: all we know and all we meet. God sees our love and care, and God will Bless us greatly. We keep asking and receiving, and then love and care. Soon we will change into the sons and daughters which God wants. Why not give it a try, W2L? God will always help and Bless us. I say this with love, and send greetings. From Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Hades means the forces of evil and sin. Jesus was simply saying that evil and sin will not overcome the "rock" of Gods established kingdom.

Hello @W2L,

The term, 'the gates of Hell', found in Matthew 16:18, refers to 'the power of the grave', to retain, as in Isaiah 38:10; Job 38:17; Psa.9:13 & Psa.107:18.

As you will already know, the word hell is used to translate the Hebrew words, 'Sheol', 'Hades', 'Gehenna', and 'Tartaroo'. A look at the way each one is translated alternately, and a reading of each reference given, within it's context, will show you, without doubt how each one is used by the Holy Spirit.

The word has been abused and misused to the point where it's original meaning has been obliterated. Hell, was, in it's original form, a perfect translation for Sheol and Hades, for it meant, 'to hide away', and each of these words refer to, 'the place of the dead', or, 'the grave'. Gehenna, only, refers to judgement, and to fire, because it related to the judgements at the end of the age. Tartaroo is used only once and refers to the place where the, 'spirits', or fallen angels are kept, awaiting judgement.

I hope this is a help.
In Christ Jesus
Chris

Hades is from Greek mythology, a place where the dead are separated from the living by the river Styx. In this context "the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it" might as well be "death shall not prevail against it."

I guess what i want to know is, does hades refer to the grave, or to eternal hellfire?
Hell i believe is a prison for the spirits of people who are reserved for the final judgement.. While in most churches Hell is looked upon as being the same as the Lake of Fire.. I believe that People shall only enter into the Lake of Fire after the final judgement.. The Book of Revelation shows the final judgement in Chapter 20... It says about Hell..

Revelation 20: KJV
10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. {11} And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. {12} And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. {13} And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. {14} And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. {15} And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."

So hell is going to be cast into theLake of Fire.. Therefore Hell cannot be the Lake of Fire..

Gates of Hell from me I am sorry to say is my response W2L

And I wish Hell did not exist yet in my heart I know it does with satan and His evil spirits not just the ego many say is evil symbolically

If one receives Jesus Holy Spirit God in hearts with Holy Spirit in Holy Discernment then a heart will surely be enlightened that hell hades satan and His evil spirits exist and that aitch was not intended to be capitalised btw

Jesus in His Holy Word spoke in one Holy Parable for example in several Holy Ways Holy Meanings given in His Sermons in His Teachings on everything with God enlightening hearts in different ways in Him

We all receive Jesus God Holy Spirit and myself my Blessed Virgin Mother with and in Jesus God my Heavenly Divine Majesty and Holy Spirit in Gods Holy Will and Holy Ways hence every heart soul will not be enlightened on Hades Hell in the ways others have

For instance God my Heavenly Father Gifts me bit by bit enlightening my heart soul mind while reading His Holy Word in sort of three Holy Dimensions 3 Holy Meanings of His One Holy Passage leaving my heart soul mind reeling with astonishment a Holy Good astonishment yet in other Holy Passages Jesus God Holy Spirit and with Holy Mother Mary I receive one or two Holy Enlightenments and on Hades I have been shown some things that differ to others of whom have seen glimpses of Heaven Holy Purgatory and Hell/Hades generally in between deep Prayer with Jesus keeping my heart mind soul away from the dark side as greatly in His Holy Will one reason I feel in my heart is that Jesus knows I have had too much of an inquisitive detective nature from young and with the dark side of this life it is healthier for my soul Now and eternally to now avoid those things and focus entirely on Jesus His Life His Sufferings His Bitter Passion sharing in Him with Him His Sorrows Sufferings and Agonies going deeper in my Love Comfort Gratitude for Jesus God Holy Spirit and my Blessed Holy Mother and Holy Mother of Sorrows
Thanks for the response.
