Hey everyone, I had a question regarding part of the Apostles Creed.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

What does it truly mean that 'He', Jesus, descended into Hell? Until the third day when he rose again. I have never heard of him desceding into hell before.

Thanks for answering my newbie question.

Somebody had to go to rescue these people who lived 4000 years before he come :)

People in OT could not go to heaven because price was not paid yet on cross. They went to Abraham bossom , you can read about it in parable of Rich man and Lazarus. Wicked were burning , while good people were comforted .

After Jesus died he went to hell and was preaching for 3 days his victory over death , then he took people who lived by faith in comming Messiah , proclaiming to them that he is the one who they were waiting for . So Jesus took them after 3 days from Abraham bosom to heaven while he was risen himself from the death . He completed 3 feasts this way , he was the Passover Lamb , then he was Unleavened Bread ( his body did not see corruptiong for 3 days ) , then he rose from dead fullfilling feast of First Fruits ( it's plural , he was first fruit + OT saints ) . Then hell become large by collapsing Abraham bosom so it can have more space for these atheists that we find nowdays .

It's a much debated loose interpretation of scripture.

There is also a story told by one who was there in the Gospel of Nakdimon (Nicodemus). Yeshua entered Sheol and freed the captives. This is part of our Pascha services. The Icon of The Resurrection depicts Yeshua freeing Adam and Eve as well as old Testament Saints.

Hell is where Jesus went and snatched the keys of death and of hell from the hands of Satan. He entered there as a punished sinner (for us) and emerged the victor over death and hell.
