Has Rome ever dogmatically defined the books of the canon of scripture? Keyword: dogmatically.
Yes twice, once at the council of Florence in the 15th century AD and again at the council of Trent in the 16th century AD. The ancient local councils at Rome, Hippo, and Carthage also gave the same list in the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

"What would you do if you discovered that the canonical scriptures really do contain 73 books?"

If I believed, as you do, tha all 73 books in the Catholic Bible are divinely inspired, I would treat women as my moral inferior. Why? Because 1 of those 73 books reveals this about women:

Sirach 42:14: "Better is the wickedness of a man than a woman who does good, and it is a woman who brings shame and disgrace."

But since I don't believe Sirach should be canonical, I must embrace the heresy that all people are created equal. Sigh!
Sure, and excluding those books from the OT we should still put disobedient children to death and stone unmarried non-virgin women. God created evil and commands the Israelites to rape and slaughter women and children.

Well God does not change Malachi 3:6

And he is consuming fire.. Hebrews 12:29

And some people were drunk while doing sacrifice and God devour them with fire that one time Leviticus 10:1-10

But now we have Jesus Christ as our high priest so nothing can go wrong :) Hebrews 4:14-16

You could be wrong about all that applying to "me". Right?

No.
All that does apply to me because I am a sinner and Jesus died for sinners. All that applies to me because Jesus says "whoever comes" and "whoever believes".

It is not my doing, my cleverness/worthiness that makes it apply to me; it is all from God. He created me, saved me, fills me with his Spirit and didn't, and doesn't, give up on me.

Ok, so your good with the of stoning disobedient children and non-virgin unmarried women? And you consider every word-all 30,000 or so verses- of the non Apocryphal OT and the NT to be perfectly clear and obviously consistent in all ways?

Psalms 12:6

The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Maybe you don't have comforter , need help with that ?

Check out free gift of comforter in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 , then you are sealed with him as seen in Ephesians 1:13-14 :)

fhansen: "God created evil and commands the Israelites to rape and slaughter women...."

"Are you a typical example of stellar Catholic knowledge of Scripture? You can provide no biblical text in which God commands rape.
Ok, slaughter; rape was a side-"benefit".

No, I'm fine. I just don't claim to be comforted by the Spirit who gives differing interpretations to others who claim to be likewise comforted. :)

He did not fail me once so far , i fail him many times tho , you can grief him and make him sad , you can only grief somebody who loves you. Ephesians 4:30

Well no offense "GingerBeer, but.. this is just speculation/hypothetical. For me.. this would be coming from someone that does not know Yeshua. Well.. His real.. Anyone can just pray seek.. ask Him. SO many dont. They by pass Him.. to pray to seek and this can take a min to days to weeks and months..and DUH who wants to WAIT on GOD to hear the TRUTH? Am I right? HELLO! Hehe..

Yet thats true. We can as ONE wait on the lord ask HIM..or by pass Him doubt talk about anything speculate like crazy and then make anything sound like truth. Buts..its not truth we seek here.

And..have to disagree..its not some say but Jesus about who comes to God No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

What if Catholicism got it wrong? What if catholicism is wrong?
The 'what ifs' can apply equally to any church, or any individual. We just believe that, while Scripture is easily and plausibly debatable from many perspectives, the church has a living legacy stretching back to the beginnings of Christianity. That church, which God established, should be identified by us. It should be identifiable-by a unity of practices and professed beliefs, 'one Lord, one faith, one baptism'.

What would you do if you discovered that the canonical scriptures really do contain 73 books?
What would you do if Apostolic tradition really is revelation from God?
What would you do if Sola Fide and Sola scriptura were wrong?
What would you do if Bishops and Elders (priests) and deacons really are the church officers ordained by God?
What would you do if the five Patriarchs really were called by God to govern the church of God?
What would you do if the Patriarch of Rome really were the first among equals and also the final authority to whom disputed matters were to be referred?
What would you do if church councils really did have God given authority to decide and declare the doctrines of the Christian faith whenever the councils were ratified by the Patriarch of Rome?

What would you do if they all literally (being the greatest among you) actually washed your feet?

I think its unwise to follow a church simply because they claim to be old. What advantage do you have as a cathiolic, that i as a protestant dont? Please open your eyes and see the truth.
