Always, always do what you think is right.
Never do what others think is right for you
if you disagree.

Bible Search: what is right
The verse you quoted was said by Elihu, who was one of Job's friends that God rebuked:

Job 42:7
After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.

Jeremiah 19:7
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Proverbs 21:2
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Proverbs 12:15
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

Proverbs 16:2
All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the LORD weighs the motives.

Judges 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

How do, or can we "obey"...?

What is the best most effective way to obey?, and obey what exactly...?

Do we do so by knowing all the time knowing what "not to" do, or not...?

If not, then how does that work or operate...?

Comments...?

God Bless!
I didn't learn how to be obedient until I learned to let go of my desire to do it myself and allowed Holy Spirit to change me from within.
I stopped worrying about the 10 Commandments and started focusing on my relationship with Jesus Christ. As I did this, I began noticing that the old desires were fading away. Things that captivated me before started to become abhorrent It was no longer about me obeying a list of do's and don'ts but instead about allowing God to live within me.

God Bless

He does talk about people who heed his words...

Yeah. I don't really know the question proposed.

I can say this, Christ said to "seek" and to "knock". He brought us truth. He is truth. He wants us to seek spiritual understanding of the truth which he spoke.

Truth is knowledge.

1 John:
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

We know through knowledge.

I think I understand the sense of the word you are thinking of, and His actual wording He said for you isn't using that paraphrase 'obey', but instead uses different words, just above, the words "keep" and "remain" -- potent words. Please please see the quote I just added just above in red.

I see what you're saying. Here's my take.

Words can deceive. What we really seek is "understanding". And even more, "spiritual understanding" Knowing the will of God. Our Father is spirit. Jesus taught spirit.

John:
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Life comes by spirit not flesh.

The same faith you displayed in salvation is the same faith you use every single day you walk with the Lord. Jesus not only died for your sins but he died that you may be able to live for him for the rest of your life not being controlled by your sinful passions or by the sin nature. Start off everyday surrendering to the Lord laying down every problem every struggle every bondage and every evil passion at the cross for there is where Jesus Christ gained your victory. You asked what to obey exactly, Obey the gospel of God by simply placing your faith in what Jesus Christ did for you and believing.

How do, or can we "obey"...?

Without the help of the Holy Spirit we cannot obey at all. Even with his help our obedience will always be imperfect. This does not mean that we are not called to obey. Just recognizing the reality of our fallen condition.

What is the best most effective way to obey?, and obey what exactly...?

As to what we obey, it is the Law of God summarized in the two great commandments to love God and neighbor. As to the method, we must be empowered by the Holy Spirit by means of apprehending the grace and love of the Father in the revelation that is in Jesus Christ. The more we "get" the cross, the more we want to obey.

Do we do so by knowing all the time knowing what "not to" do, or not...?

An accurate knowledge of God's law is essential for proper obedience.

to "obey" implies a cold and distant relationship.

I couldn't think of a better way to capture the problem of American Christianity than with the above quote. The fact that we believe the above in any degree is a huge problem.

In the Bible, there is nothing cold and distant about obedience.

What a terrible principle.

Judges 21:25 - In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 - The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

Obedince means to hear and do. The first step to living in obedience is learning to listen and discern the Spirit. This takes practice and patience its not something that is rushed, Gods not on our schedule, we are on his. Studying the word is vital in discerning spirits, spend time with Jesus because he is the express image of the Father, all of scripture is understood through revelation of him by the Holy Spirit.

When you pray listen, and wait, take note of any impressions you may have. Any verses that might pop up in your head randomly, any weird sensations on the body, just try to be aware of any changes, are you picturing something in your imagination, write it down. When Christ reveals what you need you'll have understanding, and he will teach you what to do. Treat your walk as a journey, just enjoy the walk, feel free to rest in him if need be. Take time to "shut the doors of your prayer closet". Focus on blotting out any distraction, go to a remote or quiet place if it helps.

Everything regarding our walk, or the Kingdom of Heaven comes out of our relationship with Jesus, from that source all the rest will come. If you walk in Christ you are living in obedience to him. His commandment is to love one another as he loves us. Its hard to obey "love one another" if you have not spent time receiving his love for you.

What are his commandments to us, is it the same for everyone...?

God Bless!
1 John 3, 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
John 1, 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1, 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
Matt. 1, 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matt.16,16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
John 1, 12-13 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 1 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
John 16, 7-9 I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me.
Matt.9, 12-13 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The New covernant in the blood of Jesus:
Hebrews 10,16-17 This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he adds:“Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.
By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word; The lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, seen by the apostles and more than 500 people, taken to heaven and will come again.

That is wrong. From Jesus own mouth the Greatest commandment is "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength". It is not to be perfect.

And to answer the OP, God said he would write his law on our hearts. By being sensitive to our hearts and the leading of the Holy Spirit we will be obeying God. We need ot be wary of the flesh though which wants what is contrary to the Spirit.
In what way is it wrong? Where does Jesus say that this command has been superseded.
Do you not realise if we could keep this command there would be no need for the 10 commandments or for Jesus's death and resurrection.

(when born again, right?)

The Pharisees were not very merciful... Neither are the ones today...

on the whole, it is causation/infliction of evil to/on the neighbor/cohabitant that is not to be done, but, first of all, there is spiritual unrighteousness/wickedness, which is the original sin, the sin of the sins, the evil of evils, the cause of the causes, the iniquity of iniquities, vanity of vanities, etc.

Blessings

They say that, if you look at the oncoming headlights you don't want to contact, you will be drawn to them like a moth to a flame and you will end up hitting them head on.

The way to keep on the straight path is to ignore the place you wish to avoid and concentrate on the path you want to be on.

Likewise - if you concentrate on what you don't want to do you will end up being drawn to it. If you want to stay on the straight path you must concentrate on what you want to do and not on what you want to avoid.

In other words - we want to renew our minds to what living in the Kingdom of God is all about and put the old ways behind us.

For example - if I want to be a generous man and not greedy - I give and give until I find joy in giving and am repulsed by greed.

If I want to be a faithful husband - I concentrate on giving to and pleasing my wife rather than thinking about those things I want to avoid.

The new man is built up and the old man is made less. I renew my mind. I don't suppress my mind.

"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things." Philippians 4:8.

Some translations render it thus, no idea which version is correct:

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
