Mathew 6:3 "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing"

Is giving with the left hand a bad thing?
If a person knows that he is going to give and then gives with the left hand is it bad? What is the meaning of this saying? It can't be literal, how about the left-handed? Or if a person by chance gives with the left hand? And also, planning and going out to give something, money or otherwise to the poor is a bad thing? Is this a bad thing? I don't want to seem to be a great giver but does planning on giving a bad thing?

It means do not make a big public deal out of your giving. It is to be done in private. Note the previous 2 verses:

1 Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
2 So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

I understand that. But a person cannot give in private in a public street filled with people how see us reaching for the wallet. It might mean to give and go our way.

Go to the residence of a family who constantly goes hungry, place the bag of food or groceries on their doorstep, knock on their door and run away as fast as you can

The Lord is contrasting true righteousness with hypocrisy - or even, fleshly righteousness.

True righteousness consists of keeping things between you and God, inasmuch as you can, and as far as it is good to, whilst fleeing from requiring or wanting the praise of men.

What He is doing here is saying, "When you do a good deed, don't even let your left hand know what your right is doing." as a way of emphasising His point that your good deeds should be done in secret, between you and God.

It's not meant literally in every situation.

You can't stop people seeing you giving but you can refrain from making a photo or video of you giving and putting it on your facebook or instagram for 'likes'.

The focus is don't make a show of generosity. Give without seeking attention, praise, or glory to feed your pride and ego.

It doesn't mean you can't use your left hand to give. It also doesn't mean that if someone sees you give, that it's a bad thing--it means don't seek glory through your good works.

The point is not to be "secret Santa."

Notice that everyone was quite aware of who was giving what in Acts 4.

The point is whether the intention of giving is to be congratulated and celebrated by men. If the celebration of men is the intention, then when you've gotten that, there is no further reward in Heaven.

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. -- Matthew 6
