I personally find comfort in Calvary. Jesus didn't just choose to forgive us -- He endured every temptation know to man so that I might have this forgiveness. What love! It's impossible to explain the love of Christ without the cross.

Here's some food for thought from Corrie ten Boom.

Can you forgive?
No.
But He can.

From what I figure, Jesus' capacity to withstand suffering should be limitless due to being divine and all that. This obviously isn't the case for us.

I think that alone makes human suffering incomparable to Jesus' experiences.
Jesus, and ergo, God just can't experience suffering like we do, as that would detract from His omnipotence.
That's not to say He can't understand and aid people who are suffering mind you.

Sounds like an answer from a fully-fledged Christian, Genersis :)

In all of history I have no doubt that there are many millions of people who suffered more than Jesus did on earth. I have heard that doubting Thomas, the apostle, who was martyred in India had one of the most atrocious martyrdoms imaginable.

I recently saw the Martin Scorcese movie "Silence" and the depictions of crucifixions were so terribly brutal I could barely watch (the crosses were on the sand near the ocean, and when the tide came in it the water would go up further and further on their bodies until they drowned.

And certainly, depending on what your view of hell is like, there are people who will suffer more than him for eternity.

My view of hell, however, is that God is everywhere, including hell, continually radiating warmth and love and sunlight to everyone. Purgatory residents gradually thaw as they feel the sun and the warmth and the love. People in hell, if there are any, just don't thaw...even God is no match for their icy hearts. But that's an aside.
