God continued to work to lead up to Messiah... and He made a promise to Abraham... which He extended to Isaac as an oath... and then to Jacob as a law... and then to Israel as "an EVERLASTING covenant." (
Psalms 105:8-10) If the covenant is everlasting, then the word "new" can't be correct when it speak of the new covenant. That would make sense, right? Guess what?
Jeremiah 31:31 .... the word for "new" is chadashah, it is the word chadash (to renew, make fresh) being used as an adjective. And in
Hebrews 8:8 ..... we see the word for "new" as kainos. That word means "new in regards to FRESHNESS" and there is another word, nehos... which is "new in regards to age." It is kainos that appears in the
Hebrews 8 passage that quotes
Jeremiah 31. So it is a renewed covenant... the everlasting covenant renewed through Yeshua's blood. This is why the law moves from stone to the heart.... but it is the same law. The 10 words are the covenant (Deut. 4:13) and God commanded they be kept on the heart (Deut. 6:6) and they couldn't on their own... so God is doing this for us.... first promised in Deut. 30:1-6 and then many times in the OT. Paul speaks of circumcision of the heart... he is quoting and referencing Deut. 30.
