Some research doen here in the UK states that (here) in any one year 1 in 4 people will be affected by mental health issues, either by having a problem themselves or because one fo their friends or family will have a problem.

I was interested to see how that figure extended over a more international group of people.

The point of this research is looking at the stigma attached to mental health problems, so if you have any stories relating to that then share those too.

As many of you know I have many experiences of metal helath problems as I suffer from severe depression with all sorts of associated problems, so I will get back later.

My girlfriend through high school had mental health problems but mostly it was in the decision making area. She was abused by her dad and ended up on drugs. She bacame a Christian our Sr year.

A couple of my girlfriends have issues with depression. My SIL just came off Prozac... I think it's epedemic and finding the Lord is step one back to health. (mental health as well as physical) I was slightly depressed the winter we were in AK. No sun has a bad effect on me!!! Next time I move there I'll be more conscious of sunlight hours and use them as much as I can!

I have a sis in law who has bi polar and she is a mess. She thinks that drugs (not prescribed) are the answer. She is not a Christian and doesn't want to hear about God.

I also went to school with a girl who's father had mental health problems and he let a neighbor come over and do bad things to his daughter.

I also worked with many people with mental health issues when I worked for the county health department. We were not allowed to talk about Jesus with them. Some of them ended up in mental hospitals, two committed sucicide,  and some left the program so I don't know what happened to them.

My sister has bi-polar disorder and is kind of a mess right now too, she doesn't think she needs the medication, but doesn't realize what she's doing when she's in her manic state, she doesn't think about the consequences, when she does its too late, and that's when the depression comes on. She tried to commit suicide a few months ago, and I thought things would get better, but they don't seem to be. I can't make her see what she's doing to herself, she doesn't know any other way :( I just pray ever day that she will keep taking her medication and get her act together. Send out a prayer for her if you get a chance!

Many people who are mentally ill have an undiagnosed physical illness. I had depression and anxiety for years that turned out to have a total physical basis. Also I had years of anxiety attacks end when I went on Magnesium pills. people with some mental disorders should make sure they get total medical checkups. Good ones too.

My mom is bi-polar. I had an uncle who basically drank himself to death. I believe he was self medicating through alcohol. I also had a cousin commit suicide.
I'm clinically depressed and I also have PTSD.
Medication has changed my life. I wish I had straightened this out years ago.

I'm clinically depressed, slightly bi-polar, and slightly obsessive compulsive (not so much to cause any real problems though, with the OCD). My dad is clinically depressed, and my sister is bi-polar and clinically depressed. More bi-polar than me. It really runs on my dad's side of the family.

My husband is bipolar (yay and PTL for lithium) and I am taking medication for social anxiety disorder. I know of family members from each generation who have suffered from diagnosed mental disorders an others who probably would be if they sought help.

It's sad that there is still such a stigma attached to having any kind of mental trouble. At least that is how it is in the US. It's perfectly OK to tell someone you have enlarged adenoids but it is still scandalous to find out a person has a mental disorder.

I work with people that have various mental illnesses. They are mostly older people and their illnesses are quite severe. My job is mainly to pass out the medication. Several of them were born that way and the rest took so many drugs when they were younger the gave the illness to themselves. I have so many stories about our residents....
We are not allowed to talk about religion or our personal lives at work.

I aiso know a few people outside of work who either are ill or will be pretty soon.

my sister is a recovering agoaphobic. for 11 years she did not leave the house. once she signed herself in to a phch ward and got on the correct meds--that took some time--she has made dramatic improvement. she would do better still if my parents wouln t be so protective. she still has panic attacks but not anything like the way she used to. she is ashamed to let people know about her problems although she will tell some

I have clinical depression and "severe" social anxiety disorder. Also, I think I might have some anger control problems...

My mother is bi-polar.

My father is an alcoholic so I'm sure there's something messed up there.

My brother is a recovering alcoholic... he tried to commit suicide once.

My uncle Chris killed himself... at least that's what everyone says. And I think he was on drugs.

I have a friend who is bi-polar. She's on medication and functions normally. I've had some problems with depression (pretty bad at times), but have chosen to seek healing through prayer and the company of good Christian friends. The delight of godly fellowship should not be underestimated.  :D

Clinical Depression and PTSD. Mom is bi-polar and an alcoholic. Uncle drank himself to death over the years. Had a cousin commit suicide. She was all messed up.
FOr me, the doc said if it wasn't for my "belief system" I would have attempted suicide. Go God! Heh..."belief system."
I'm on meds and am better. I should have done this 15 years ago. But I never knew I was depressed. Now that I know, I realize that this is what I have been fighting for all these years and I could have done something about it.

Anyone who isn't saved as far as I'm concerned is nuts. :D :D

I agree that God can work wonders but I don't think we should forget that healing can be done through doctors, God gave them the skills to heal us.

I certainly agree with that.  He gave us smart doctors and the ability to make medicines from natural and synthetic sources.

I know of depression simply because I have bouts with it from time to time but it's not serious.

I remember hearing or reading somewhere a Preachers sermon that said something to the effect that "our mental institutions wouldn't be so full if there was more love and forgiveness in the world".  I think this statement carries alot of weight!!

I hope no one got the wrong impression from my previous post. I wasn't denigrating doctors or the use of medication to treat mental illness. It's just that in my case my depression (a very persistent sense of hopelessness and despair) grew out of spiritual problems and not a chemical imbalance. I felt that the best way to fight this was to draw closer to God and His people, and it has worked. The Lord can meet our needs in many different ways.
