I know a woman through Facebook, she lost her husband six months ago. I lost mine three years ago. So we are in contact and I very much want to help her as she is deeply grieving. I do not know if she is a Christian, too early to ask really yet.

In her postings I know her way of relaxing is reading horror books and watching horror movies. Like a lot of people she probably thinks this is harmless. My firm belief is that it is in fact very unwholesome and dangerous. I believe it opens doors in your mind through which the evil one can enter and influence. She is bereaved, very vulnerable. I wish I could warn her to stop this, but I don't feel can say anything, since I am not a proper close friend yet.

I also hope she does not go to a medium, as I believe that too is bad news and a way of opening yourself up to dark dangerous forces.

Do you agree with my view on horror films? I genuinely want to know what Christian believers on here think. I just think all of us should steer clear of all such things. The Bible does support this.

I dislike horror films very much. I feel there should be no horror films. I will pray that God help this woman find other ways of feeling comfort.

I think there are horror films that are not profitable, but often I think they are misrepresented. As a fan of horror films, there is a constant theme of good versus evil, and often, a reliance on faith (not always) to repel the evil one. I often find there is less violence in horror movies than in many action movies to which Christians give a pass, and the violence in those films is often even more gratuitous and the films' messages are often less moral. I know there are many who disagree, but that's my two cents.

However, an unhealthy attachment to anything, including horror, can be damaging.

Well, it could be she simply has a penchant for that type of genre. I am a strong believer and I have walked with the Lord for many years, and yet there have been (and may indeed be again) several times when I will go on a horror film binge for a while. The kind I watch are all of the supernatural variety, i.e. on the subjects of demonic possession, haunting, and exorcism. Stuff like The Conjuring, The Possession, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Rite, things like that. As a believer, I'm not intimidated by spirits in reading deliverance accounts, nor would I be in person, so it naturally follows suit that I don't find watching such films all that disturbing really. I just watch them as a way of reminding myself that while the rest of the world goes on with their secular lives, we as believers are in a spiritual battle, good against evil.

Would I recommend watching them for everyone? Certainly not. I'm simply saying there are certain types of people for whom those types of films might be mildly beneficial in a way.

I agree that horror films are not something God would want us watching.

I'm the same. I watch horror films sometimes. It's just another genre of movies. I find the plotlines of some horror, thrillers, dark dramas interesting, just as I do comedies and other movies.

I wouldn't judge the friend - if she's doing it, she obviously is not having an issue with it.

Eh. If we start picking apart what "Jesus would watch" then the only real answer is never watch tv, never watch movies, never play games, never read books, never talk to people.... just live in a cave and we will be safe.

With that said I can agree that out of all genres of film, horror and slasher movies are perhaps the most pointless and gruesome genre. If Jesus had to pick the worst one, that genre would be it.

Ok. That's rational and fair enough. I cannot and must not tell anyone else what to do.
It's just I feel it is a terrible influence on anyone's mind, I never watch horror. There is enough real evil in this world! I even dislike watching the news, so many negative things happening and they dwell on them.

Hi,
I take your point. But as a Christian I am very discerning about what I allow into my mind. I personally do not want evil images and wanton graphic killing dominating my thought processes.
I just fear that this woman is already traumatized by loss and horror films will lower her moods further. Still, she is a free adult and free to choose.

I agree with all you said. The problem is, if she doesn't ask your advice, it may be wise not to give it. But no doubt you have prayed for guidance.

Oh quite right. I cannot give advice or say anything unless she asks me. I just think what a pity a grieving person is exposing herself to such awful horrible stuff. I trully believe it is bad news. Ah well, I cannot affect it.

Horror films are just works of fiction, though there are many that are . . . unedifying to say the least. I would say that a medium is much more dangerous spiritually.

In the case of this grieving person, I wouldn't jump down her throat about watching horror movies. If you have a concern about that, just pray for her. If she shares with you that she saw a medium or is thinking of seeing a medium, definitely pray about that and how to respond to her. You might ask, "why did you see the medium?" in a non-accusatory way to open it up and find out what she tells you.

As someone who watches and enjoys horror movies, I have to say there is nothing wrong with a Christian enjoying this genre. Jesus told us it is not what goes into a person that makes them unclean but what comes out of them that makes them unclean. Paul told us in 1 Corinthians chapter 10 that eating meat offered to idols is acceptable, but if it causes your brother to stumble do not do it in their presence but your conscience is clean. If your friend likes a particular genre and you don’t, they shouldn’t view it in their presence, but their conscience is clean.

Grief can cause people to make wrong choices, regardless of how they spend their time. It is that you really need to watch for. Make sure your friend doesn’t turn to unhealthy and destructive behavior and be there for her if she does, but remember it wasn’t what she watched that was the cause, it was her grief.

And anyone who watches horror movies knows that seeing a medium or using a Ouija board is never a good thing.

Hi,
it's ok everyone has their personal opinion.
Mine is that any things that appear innocent and harmless are actually not. Everything we expose ourselves to influences us.very often it is through watching horror or violence in films that has caused some people to commit acts of violence even murder. Remember the James Bulger case? The two young murderers, just children themselves, had watched horrific films that gave them the idea. They had deprived backgrounds and no proper guidelines in their lives.
So my main point is how such unwholesome films make the viewer feel . Most people are ok but it does nobody any real good. We are each free to make choices of course.
I will not say anything to my friend as it is not my place.

Saying all Horror films are evil or wrong is like saying popcorn is bad to eat just because one time you choked on it. Not only do I watch Horror films, I write Horror--and I am a Believer who is in constant prayer and constant communion with Jesus. Not all Horror is good. Some of it is evil and should be avoided. Some, though, is truly great and needed for those who are inclined to do intense spiritual warfare with the Enemy. That's how I've used it, and have used it for the past 45 years and counting.

Hi,
that's a good point. I am interested in reading about spiritual warfare. I never thought about that aspect! I expect very few people would be strongminded and prepared to take on the devil and his demons directly. Not advisable. I just ask for Jesus's protection and stay away from negative influence and people.
