This is totally weird and I'm 90% sure it's my scrupulosity kicking up. But I'm due to see a band tonight, this awesome bluegrass band (not Christian, a secular band) called Holy Ghost Tent Revival, and I'm worried that the name is blasphemous, and that b/c it is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, going to the show will constitute committing the unpardonable sin.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure why they chose that name - (it's rather strange for a secular group imho), but I don't believe you will be committing the unforgivable sin by attending.

I don't think it commits the unpardonable sin. They probably don't know why they chose that name.

Band name? Not at all.

Your confusion on that arises from the fact the general church world has NOT accurately taught what constitutes that sin.

The context for our Lord giving that warning was Him casting out demons, and a group of Pharisees telling the crowd that He was doing that by Beelesebub, (meaning lord of the flies) the prince of demons - iow the devil himself. And they were clearly doing it to prevent those people from paying attention to the Gospel.

Are you calling any of God's TRUE miracles demonic/devilish in origin?
Are you trying to prevent people from hearing and responding to the gospel?

If not, then you are NOT committing that sin.

If your conscience bothers you about it, don't go. Simple.

A lot of secular unbelievers are using Gods name now to justify sin????
A prominent ceo unbeliever made this statement..

Homosexuality is the best gift that god has given me!!!
I pray for his soul cause he is ignorant....
But that is calling God a liar!!!!
Since God sid homosexuality is an abomination.....

Weird stuff going on in ameica right now....

I just got back from china and they arrested a group of weird christian cult.....
I believe they are called Church of Jesus Christ in God
The founder claims that Jesus came back to China in the body of a woman...apparently she is the woman....

They beat to death a woman in a maceonalds who woudnt convert to their cult

By the way she left china years ago and now lives in america

Even though people are ignorant i would be careful around anyone who mixes the name of God with the world

Heavens no, gospel is a big influence on Blue Grass, it's just reminiscent of the old tent revivals. The Methodists couldn't expect people during pioneer days to come to them, so they sent out circuit preachers. They put a lot of emphasis on the Holy Spirit and the meetings were famous for being spontaneous, very emotional and a lot of great music. The band probably grew up playing in Church, my guess is they are just trying to honor a musical tradition that had a strong influence on their particular style. They are honoring their gospel music roots, I'm pretty sure their intention is the opposite of blasphemy.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a sin committed by the children of perdition. People were trying to discredit Jesus by saying he cast out demons by Beelzebub, which was a demon or an unclean spirit. The Holy Spirit is how salvation happens, that's how you are born again, you are born of the Spirit. They were rejecting the only basis for salvation so Jesus is telling them, you will die in your sins, because they had rejected the only basis.

You cannot commit that sin by accident, it's motivated by a permanent hardness against the things of God. If it bothers you that you might have committed or might commit that sin, that's a pretty good indication that you haven't.

Grace and peace,
Mark

Its not blasphemy just mixing the world with Christian name....unless they sing gospel music???

Example
Elvis pressley starting singing with gospel music.....
Then the worlds music and influence crept in.....
Ended up loosing his inglunce for Christ

Also i have seen many Christian singers going into secular music and messing up their life!!!!

Dont believe God called these christian singers to sing christian music and then told them to change and sing secular music

I've heard that before and I understand your sensibilities here. I remember there was a scene in Ray where people got indignant at one of his performances, they said that's the Lord's music. Soul had a strong influence from the gospel music of that day, Motown took that style and gave it basically, a secular lyrics. Elvis said in his TV special, I don't care what anyone says, it's got to be rhythm and blues or gospel to be Rock and Roll to me. He was from Memphis, which sits on the Mississippi. When you have a commercial center where people from all over come to do business you have a lot of cultural influences. There was Country, Blue Grass, a lot of gospel, Jazz grew up in the culture along the Mississippi where classical and popular music was blended.

I see it as a cultural legacy, calling a Blue Grass band Holy Ghost Tent Revival isn't blasphemous, it's an identification with the Christian influence on music. What's wrong with that?

A preacher said one time its not the music.....

Its the words that are sung in the music????

Cut out the words....write them down......
Read what they say....
You will know real soon whether it is from God or not!!!

Weird name but I think anyone that has some kind of religious term pertaining to God or otherwise should be encouraged. They aren't necessarily saying they are the Holy Spirit, they actually are saying they are trying to be a revival for the Holy Spirit

It's possible, or might eventually lead to it.
