What do Wesleyans believe about speaking in tongues?

I don't think all of them "ignore" the gifts. Every church varies. For instance, I know of some Baptists that are borderline Bapticostal, while other Baptists are strongly cessastionist. It just depends on the pastor/congregation I guess.

We may need you to give us a list of the official nicknames of denomination members who believe in the gifts ;)

That's cute. :D:) Actually, there are some churches in my area that claim their faith is Bapticostal, so I can't take credit for that one. Methocostal, on the other hand, I don't know if I've ever heard before. Not too sure on that one.

I shall officially adopt Methocostal as a new word

Again one thing I like about the Methodist church is they aren't so restrictive that one has to agree with every little thing officially as a defining factor on if you can be considered in the denomination.
Yeah - they are almost Jewish in that regard.

You know - 4 Jews in a room and there being 5 opinions?

I believe I know what you're saying here, but do you care to elaborate?

Its an old joke. More opinions than there are people.

======================================

Related to that - we have all seen short video clips of old Jewish men at the Temple mount with the black hats and long beards yelling at each other; so close their beards are touching. But what those clips do NOT show is later on the 2 walking away together to sit down and have coffee or a meal together. They are good friends and probably have been for decades. They do not let their different opinions stand in the way of their solidarity as friends and orthodox Jews.

And it has been that way since at least the first century BC.

"The gift of tongues is a communication gift that allows people to speak foreign languages and convey concepts they never formally studied. People with this gift “pick up” the ability to communicate across barriers of language, culture, age, or physical limitation (some people with the gift of tongues work with the deaf or blind). The identification of the gift of tongues as a “secret” prayer language is often misunderstood. An individual manifesting the gift in this way must always be paired with someone who has the gift of interpretation of tongues. These gifts are given for the upbuilding of the body of Christ."

Taken from the official UMC website. This would be the official stance.

My pastor's cousin or brother (or maybe it was a friend?) was Spirit baptized during a praying meeting in a Methodist church and began speaking in tongues. The pastor there seemed accepting enough, but to keep from ruffling other feathers I'm assuming, this person wasn't allowed to pray/speak in tongues during this particular church's average services. There was a "tarry room" made separate for him and other congregates that wished to seek these experiences. Personally, I couldn't go to a church that differed to that extent from my own personal beliefs.

That's similar to our church, except for no tarry room. We have members who speak, or at least pray, in tongues but they are not allowed by the pastor to do so openly. (Our particular church started as a non-denominational community church; they affiliated with the "Methodist Church" before it became the UMC as a condition for getting a building. Among the early members were relatives of an Apostolic minister; these relatives had gotten away from some of the Apostolic teachings, but later received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.)

I personally don't seek the gift of tongues, and am uneasy around people that pray in tongues, for some unknown reason.
I guess different people have their own opinion(s) and experience(s) with being around someone praying and/or speaking in other tongues. Even when I wasn't self-proclaimed Pentecostal, my family would occasionally drift into Pentecostal-like churches where some of the people would occasionally speak in tongues, and it never bothered me. Now as Apostolic Pentecostal, tongues is a mainstay of our services.

Hadn't heard of a tarry room before.
I knew there were some Wesleyan congregations that held some of the Pentecostal doctrines, although they prefer the term Charismatic. Most Methodist and Nazarene churches in my area I would say are predominantly cessationist, or at least "hesitant" to the gifts operating in the modern-day Church.
I've seen responses all over the place regarding cessationism, especially depending on what the outside influence was [ie. Baptist, Pentecostal or something else]. And traditionally, the official stance towards having a prayer language or glossolia has been that it is a not a part of our spiritual tradition. I'm being kind when I put it that way... some Nazarenes get very upset if they hear that someone prays in tongues, etc. Personally, I don't care one way or another.

The Nazarene churches I know of are certainly hesitant to the gifts.

I have seen them in old Assy of God buildings, back from the 1950s.
"Tarry Rooms" are more common within the Pentecostal arena. I know Aimee McPherson had one off the side of her Angelus Temple in the 1920s and 1930s, where parishioners could seek Spirit baptism in an area separate from the main sanctuary. However, I've occasionally came across non-Pentecostal churches that have self-proclaimed "Tarry Rooms" for their more Charismatic curious members that wish to explore or received Spirit baptism.
