It says with the Holy spirit we can achieve a sound mind but I have a hard time making decisions and I have a pretty unstable mindset due to anxiety and depression how do I allow the Holy Spirit to guide me? How can I discern the Holy spirit?
Every born-again person is given a sound mind by the Holy Spirit (
2 Timothy 1:7) Are you born-again? If so, all that remains is for you to begin to stand on the truth of the sound mind you possess as a result of having the Holy Spirit within you. In God's economy of things you must first believe what God has said and then you will begin to experience it in your life. Christians are to "walk by faith, not by sight" and this means putting your full weight on what God says is true of you even when it seems it is not true.
James 1:8
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
The more single-minded a Christian is in pursuing God's will and way in their life, the less unstable they are in their thinking. The more a Christian trusts in God and lives in full surrender to Him, the more stable they are within. But if a Christian wants to live with a foot on the "broad way that leads to destruction" and the other on the "narrow way that leads to life" he will be like a "wave driven by the wind and tossed."
The Holy Spirit guides you according to God's word. The Holy Spirit leads you into all truth and that truth is found in the pages of your Bible. So, if you want to be led of the Spirit, get reading Scripture!
You don't need to "discern the Spirit." You need to obey God. And this is done by doing what He has told you to do in Scripture. So, again, get into the Bible. Study it, memorize it, and live in accord with it. This will do you far more good than straining to feel, or hear, or experience the Holy Spirit. If you're walking rightly with God, the Spirit will be working to convict you, to illuminate your understanding to God's truth, to comfort you, and strengthen you, and give you confidence in your salvation. He will cause the "peacable fruit of righteousness," the Fruit of the Spirit (
Ga. 5:22, 23), to develop within you. When this is your experience, you won't need to be chasing after strange sensations, and hyper-emotional moments, and weird manifestations of the supernatural as so many who want to "feel the Spirit" do. You will know the Holy Spirit is there within you because you are loving, joyful, peaceable, patient, gentle and so on.
