“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

2 Chr. 7:14 has become a favorite verse to quote, especially during this last political season. I wonder how many people would continue to quote this verse if they took the time to understand both this verse and the context in which it was spoken. The following article does describes what this verse really means.

A favorite verse —- misunderstood?

"Taking the time"
won't help people understand Scripture - some go all their lives reading and studying and hoping that "they find life in Scripture",
but even when the Savior Messiah King JESUS was right in front of them, they denied HIM and sought to put HIM to death !!!!!

This and all other Scripture remains a mystery due to the mystery of lawlessness rampant throughout all society (all politics) with few (if any ) exceptions by YHWH'S GRACE.

I've heard a song to these words.

When it comes to the subject of humility, it should be a way of life, and in imitation of the Lord Jesus as described in Philippians 2: He 'humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross'.

Can one read God's word and not understand it? Absolutely!

Can one have a relationship with God and not spend time studying and meditating on his word? Probably not! What you have presented is a half truth that is very dangerous. Additionally, it has very little to do with the topic that was originally posted and demonstrates that you didn't look at the article.

not understand
So then, is the purpose to discover/ seek YHWH'S understanding and wisdom, to do as He Says,
or
to discuss why men of the world/ mankind/ always fail at doing that until they turn to Him, and then by His Grace May Be Granted Understanding ?

The article seems good.

So, how is this verse being misunderstood or misapplied? Got any popular examples?

Solomon prayed that God would bring a plague against his people so that they would be humbled and return to their God, and God's responses was an acknowledgement that he would do this.

When this verse is cited (especially during the last political season), people ignore the first half of the prayer and the first half of God's response. They aren't praying that God would humble his people so that they will return to him, they are citing this verse in support of the idea that if we humble ourselves God will bless us. This was especially true during the last political season when many were telling us that "our voting choice" was the act of humbling ourselves God required.

How many today would pray Solomon's prayer, or expect God's answer to his prayer?

If American Christians and churches are repenting and humbling themselves, then it seems that the basic promise is still correctly understood. If God's people repent and humble themselves, then God should stop the curses and restore the blessings. This should work on a national-political level today just as it did from Judges to Soloman's time.

However, if they are just seeking cheap grace, then yeah, there is a misunderstanding.
