Why was a second lamb added to the Passover lamb of the Passover supper, but not made part of the first Passover meal?
The second lamb was added later to take away the sins of the people so they could eat the Passover supper which consisted of the memorial lamb (II Chronicles 35:3, 15, 17). The second lamb was not eaten. It was used as a sacrifice for a sin offering.
II Chronicles 35:3, 15, 17
3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the Lord, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the Lord your God, and his people Israel,
15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
17 And the children of Israel that were present kept the passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days.
The second lamb that was used to take away sins, was called a Passover too. This was the lamb that Mashiyach (Christ) replaced (I Corinthians 5:7) when He died on Calvary, not the Passover lamb used during the feast (Luke 22:7-8).
I Corinthians 5:7-8
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Luke 22:7-8
7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
5. Explain the difference and purpose of the lambs in II Chronicles 30:15-21?
The first lamb was used to take away sins so one could eat the Passover lamb, which is the second lamb. The second lamb served as a memorial and celebration of the Passover feast.
However, Mashiyach died to take away our sins (John 1:29, 36) in order that we may be qualified to eat the Passover lamb during Passover (I Corinthians 5:7). This is how we know that Mashiyach is our Passover for sin not the Passover feast.
II Chronicles 30:15-21
15 Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the Lord.
16 And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.
17 For there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to sanctify them unto the Lord.
18 For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim, and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, The good Lord pardon every one
19 That prepareth his heart to seek God, the Lord God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.
20 And the Lord hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people.
21 And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the Lord.
I Corinthians 5:7
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
John 1:29, 36
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
If Mashiyach (Christ) is our passover, why must we keep the feast?
Contrary to popular belief, Yasha` (Christ) did not take the place of the passover lamb; he took the place of the sin sacrifice. It has been stated previously that the word passover has many usages; most biblical students are unaware of this fact, for this reason, they assume that Yasha` took the place of the passover lamb.
Exodus 12:12, 13, 23, 27 clearly shows that Yasha` (who is the human form of EL (God), Philippians 2:6-10; Acts 2:36; Isaiah 9:6) was our passover in Exodus. Even though he was the passover then, they continued to keep the feast. Yasha` is not a day; therefore, He cannot take the place of the feast day.
Exodus 12:12-13, 23, 27
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
23 For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
Philippians 2:6-10
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Isaiah 9:6
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
When people quote I Corinthians 5:7, they are saying that Yasha` (Jesus) is our passover, we are exempt from observing the feast. This may be convenient for them to think they can avoid keeping the Passover holy according to Yahhs (Lords) way. Nonetheless, Yasha` was their passover in the Old Testament and they kept the feast. In the New Testament after Mashiyachs (Christs) death, Yisrael continued to keep the Passover feast. Therefore, in todays time, we must keep the feast as well.
I Corinthians 5:7
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Exodus 12:14, 17, 24 tells us that the passover feast is to be observed for ever; no matter how many definitions there are for the word passover, they cannot be substituted for one another. Furthermore, the very Scripture which biblical students use to abolish the feast, it actually encourages us to keep the feast (I Corinthians 5:1-8).
Exodus 12:14, 17, 24
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.
I Corinthians 5:1-8
1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
