the problem is not everyone has the ability to realize when they're wrong.
I'd suggest what is needed is an attitude to realize one can be wrong. And then to admit it, first to oneself, then to others.
Our thinking and reasoning is based on underlying assumptions. Most of us have not really examined our assumptions, and many of us don't really know what they all are. If we are going to be serious about our growth in the truth, then we need to hold our assumptions lightly, knowing what they are. Realize that others hold assumptions that are probably (as a set) different from ours, and that this can be at the heart of differences of opinion. If I am willing to listen well to others, and willing to test what they say against my assumptions, I can also learn to adjust my assumption to take on ideas and insights that will bring me to a better grasp of truth.
There are things I don't know I don't know.
There are things I know I don't know
There are things I know I know
There are things I don't know I know.
The trick is to know what is what.
