What are the important things to learn as a Christian?
I have very little knowledge of my own religion, which is a shame... So I want to know, what should I learn and what should I study?
For example, which Bible verses should I learn? What is the history of Christianity? What are the most important teachings of Christ?
You have a lifetime of study ahead of you, you know that don't you????
1. Learn down to your own toes that you can't do it on your own. You will always succumb to sin,and need God's forgiveness, and his grace to fight temptation, one day at a time.
2. Learn that this grace is free and undeserved. There is no reason for you to feel proud.
3. Learn that God made you in his image and loves you so much he died for you, thus you have dignity. There is no reason for shame either.
4. Learn what the basic gospel message is: that Christ has died for your sins, has risen, and will come again. If you repent and are baptized, and respond to God's grace with a working faith, you will have everlasting life and God will transform you into the mind of Christ over the course of your life. The Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed do a good job condensing the gospel into a few words. Learn why "redemption" and "atonement" are used as metaphors for the gospel.
5. Learn that being saved is more than a single moment in time with a before and after, but rather that moment is the beginning of a journey with Christ. Study how the Bible teaches we have been saved (past tense), how we are being saved (present tense), and have hope of being saved (future tense.)
6. Learn what Sanctification is and why it is so important.
7. Study Church history, beginning with the Early Church Fathers. Try to go into it with an open mind, not biased towards Protestant or Catholic POV.
8. Concentrate on learning the teachings of the Ecumenical Councils, such as Trinitarianism at the Council of Nicea and orthodox Christology at the Council of Chalcedon. After all, you don't want to end up in the old heresies that non-Christian churches still teach.
9. Learn HOW to study the Bible. There are different levels of understanding it. Simply reading it has value, but it is the lowest level of understanding. If you go slower it is better. Pause with each phrase and ask yourself what it means. Stop with each point, and ask yourself what this means FOR YOU, what is God trying to tell you? The deepest level is to study it together with a book that goes into depth about the Hebrew or Greek (you can even use a lexicon) and explores the history and culture of the time, and comments on various scholar's views and theologies. But you still pray afterwards asking God to reveal what you are to learn from your study, how it applies to your life.
10. Get your foundation: Start by studying the four gospels until you know them backwards and forwards. A lot of Christians study the epistles and neglect the gospels, and end up with a skewed theology. What JESUS said gives the context for the epistles. It is Jesus that teaches the New Covenant.
11. Find the origin of the New Covenant--Judaism and the Old Covenant: Read the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) and learn it's stories and laws well. If it weren't for the Jews, Christianity wouldn't exist. Jesus said,"Salvation is from the Jews."
12. You have your whole life to study the rest of the Bible. My favorite portions are 1 John 1, Romans 11, the parable of the sheep and the goats, and the story of Joseph in Genesis.
13. Learn how to pray. There are different kinds of prayer -- familiarize yourself with them all. There is the sudden prayer that pops up during the day, "God,help me not to lose my temper!" There is the reflective temper over coffee or in bed at night that gives thanks, shares your day with the Lord and goes over major events, repents for the sins of the day, asks the Lord what he wants to teach you, and prays for others. And there are inspirational prayers that others have written that you can adopt as your own. In many churches, Christians pray together responsorially -- it's lovely. PRAY OFTEN. And listen for God's reply.
14. Live your faith. Feed the hungry. Visit the sick and in prison. Clothe the naked. Look for those who need your help. Sometimes they are the person around the world. Sometimes they are the single mother next door. Sometimes you get personally involved. Other times you pay tithes or taxes with joy and the money goes towards their benefit. St Francis of Assisi said, "Preach constantly, use words when necessary." Faith without works is dead. James 2:26.
