I find this a fascinating subject; what has inspired me today is this: What Is the Abomination of Desolation?

I do not agree with every thing said in this video but it is a starting point for a conversation.

There are two parts, the abomination and the desolation

Using the info provided by UCG, the Greek king orders the Jews to stop keeping the Law and to do things the Law forbids; this was repeated during the inquisitions when people were forbidden from keeping the Sabbath; I expect the Law of God to be forbidden again. But is God concerned with what the Pagans do, or is the abomination to do with the Jews abandoning God.

In the example of the Jews rebuilding the Temple and practicing the Law in the superseded manner that denies the coming and presence of the Messiah; this would be an abomination.

Antiochus Epiphanes IV, outlawed many Jewish religious customs, forced them to renounce their religion, sold them into slavery, and desecrated the temple by sacrificing a pig on the alter. This caused the Macabeans to revolt.
In Matthew 24:15 ,Jesus is referring to a future event, because there was no covenant with Israel for 7 years, also Daniel 9:27, was not all fulfilled by Antiochus.
I believe this refers to the antichrist in the end times that will do something similar in the temple in Jerusalem, after a 7 year covenant with Israel.

OP:Q:"What Is the "Abomination of Desolation"?

The answer is clear: THE person of the anti-christ...a man 666...The "man of lawlessness"... the "beast"

"Abomination of Desolation"

Daniel 11:31...His PROPHECY of the "End Times"
Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the "regular sacrifice".
(spiritual / worship practices of Nation Israel)
And they will set up the "abomination of desolation".

Daniel 12:11
From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished
and the "abomination of desolation" is set up,
there will be 1,290 days.(of days)

Matthew 24.."Perilous Times: Jesus'prophecy of the "End Times"
15 “Therefore when you see the "abomination of desolation" which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet (above!),
standing in the holy place (Jerusalem temple? Rock of the Dome?) (let the reader understand),
16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.
22 Unless those days (of tribulation) had been cut short, no life would have been saved (from death or worse!);
but for the sake of the "elect" (= "elektos" = saved believers) those days will be cut short.
27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Glorious Return...The Second Coming!

29 “But immediately after the ( GREAT) tribulation of those days
the sun will be darkened, and
the moon will not give its light, and
the stars (meteors?) will fall from the sky, and
the powers of the heavens (atmosphere?) will be shaken.
30 And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and
then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and
they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.( SEE 1 THESS.4 !!)
31 And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and
they will gather together His "elect" (= "elektos" = saved believers) from the four winds,
from one end of the sky (earth's atmosphere??) to the other.

2 Thessalonians 2:1,3 [ "Man of Lawlessness" = THE anti-christ ]
Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the (SECOND!) coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
and our gathering together to Him, (SEE: 1 Thess. 4 !!)...
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it (SECOND Coming!) will not come unless the "apostasy" (falling away) comes first, and the "man of lawlessness" is REVEALED, the "son of destruction",

"THE beast" = THE anti-christ = MAN (666)

Revelation 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the "number of the beast',
for the number is that of a MAN; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.(666)

Revelation 20:10...[Doom of the unholy "trinity"]
And the devil(aka satan/dragon/serpent/Lucifer/etc) who deceived them was thrown into the "lake of fire" and brimstone,
where the beast (anti-christ) and the false prophet (anti-spir are also;
and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (NO ANHILILATION!)

Revelation 19:20 [ Doom of the Beast{anti-christ} and False Prophet {anti-spirit} ]
And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence,
by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast (666?) and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the "lake of fire" which burns with brimstone.

Revelation 17:8
“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction.
And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the "book of life" from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was... and is not ...and will come.

Revelation 20:12, 15...The Great White Throne SENTENCING
And I saw the (unsaved) dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne,
and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the (LAMB'S)"book of life";
and the (UN-believing) dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds...
>>And if anyone’s name was not found written in the (LAMB's) "book of life", he was thrown into the "lake of fire".<<< = UN-believers

Revelation 21:27...NEW Heaven + NEW Earth + NEW Jerusalem
and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it,
but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s "book of life".

Psalm 69:28
May they be blotted out of the "book of (eternal spiritual)life"
And may they not be recorded with the righteous.

The abomination causing desolation involving Jesus' prophetic fulfillment was referring to the Roman armies with their idolatrous standards which desolated Jerusalem and desecrated the temple.

That's why Christians are told to flee Jerusalem when they see it which they did during the time that the Roman siege was temporarily lifted.

So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

— Matthew 24:15-16 (ESV)

But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

— Mark 13:14 (ESV)

Luke's version identifies the abomination as armies from which those when see them must flee clearly indicating that is what Jesus meant.

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the town depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it

— Luke 21:20-21 (ESV)

John Wesley (1754) also rejects the rabbinical view and wrote, "When ye shall see the abomination of desolation - Daniel's term is, 'The abomination that maketh desolate' (xi. 31); that is, the standards of the desolating legions, on which they bear the abominable images of their idols. Standing in the holy place - Not only the temple, and the mountain on which it stood, but the whole city of Jerusalem, and several furlongs of land round about it, were accounted holy; particularly the mountain on which our Lord now sat, and on which the Romans afterward planted their ensigns." [19]

During its final fulfilment during the Lord's Day as described by the Apostle John, the abomination refers to something else.

I reject futurism out of hand; the throwing of the seventieth week down to the end of time, comes from the Jesuit Priest Ribera whose purpose was to place the antichrist outside the time frame of the Papacy such that the Pope could not be the beast; besides throwing the seventieth week down to the end of time is irrational.

I have to admit Daniel 9:27 confuses me; I read verse 27 before verse 26 then it makes more sense; but the daily sacrifice was ended twice; first when Jesus replaced it on the cross and physically in 70 AD.

Post #6 = stretches big time! Horse Feathers!
I simply mentioned what you omitted. Nothing more. If indeed you consider what I wrote inaccurate or flawed, then the Christian and decent thing to do would be to specifically point out the flaw instead of making vague rude remarks.

the current abomination of desolation - that displaces the legitimate site of Solomon's Temple,
the House of God.

"the day of the Lord" EVENT has NOTHING to do with the "abomination of desolation" described by Daniel and Jesus. IT IS FUTURE!

"THE DAY of the LORD" - Ryrie p 1392 SEE: isaiah+jeremiah+ezekial+zephaniah+joel ==>

2 Peter 3: 9-10
The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. (salvation)
But "the day of the Lord" will (is sure to) come like a thief,
and then the heavens (atmosphere) will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire,
and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

TRIBULATION - Isaiah 2: 12-19
SECOND COMING - Joel 2:28-32
MILLENIUM - Isaiah 4:2,12; 19:23-25; Jeremiah 30:7-9

futurism:
Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century.

Futurism - Wikipedia

Preterism:

Preterism Refuted

According to Preterists…
• The Tribulation
• The Antichrist
• The Abomination of Desolation
• Jesus’ Second Coming (Matthew 24; Revelation 19)
…are all things of the PAST.
Many preterists believe that these things were fulfilled in the turmoil and political upheaval that ensued when Jerusalem was sacked by Rome and most of its inhabitants were slaughtered in A.D. 70.

The Apostle John tells us clearly in his introduction to the Revelation that his vision was taking place in the Day of the Lord.

Rev 1
9 I, John,AA)' data-cr="#cen-NIV-30707AA"> your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit,
Revelation 6:17
16And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. 17For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?” [/quote]

There are many other scriptures in Revelation which corroborate that the things mentioned in Revelations are describing what Jesus mentioned in Math 24.

Post #8: "throwing the seventieth week (of weeks = 7 years) down to the "end of time" is irrational..."

Nope. When Nation Israel denied their Divine Messiah, God stopped their "clock" with 7 years left FOR:
SEE: Matthew 24= Jesus' prophecy on the "End Times".
1. Tribulation (3.5 years)
2. GREAT Tribulation (3.5 years)
3. The Second Coming of Jesus the Divine Messiah

Matthew 23:37 [ Jesus' Lament over Nation Israel / Jerusalem ]
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!
How often I wanted to gather your children together,
the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.(to accept Messiah!)

Matthew 3:10
The ax is already at the root of the trees (Nation Israel), and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 21:43
“Therefore I tell you that the "kingdom of God" will be taken away from you (Nation Israel) and
given to a people who will produce its fruit.(Age of Gentiles)

John 15:2...Jesus the TRUE VINE, his TRUE Followers the "Branches"
He (God the Vinedresser) cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,
while every branch that does bear fruit he PRUNES so that it will be even more fruitful.

It stands to reason that you cannot flee what you cannot see ...

What became the abomination in the first garden, and how it became this is a consistent narrative throughout scripture.
