I haven't put it to the test yet but I resolved in myself not to watch anymore horror films or films filled with violence. I used to love horror movies. I also try not to watch any overly sexual movies. I feel like most kids movies and documentaries are a safe zone for me even though kids movies can have a lot of hidden sexual innuendos. There's actually this one movie I loved called Antz that I didn't realize had so many background mature themes until I watched it over as an adult

I should also add that I also don't watch movies with crude humor like "pineapple express"

BUT I really want to see Alien Covenant so badly which I know could be bad but I'm sorting it out. I'll see how other review it

I'm assuming this is the essence of your criteria - finding a safe zone. I think that is admirable ... as long as it doesn't become some kind of self-flagellation.

Thanks and I'm unsure as to what "self-flagellation" means? nvm Google

Well, Idk, what do you think? I think that I would not want my children watching some or most these things so that's a good place to start for me. How about you? What are your criteria?

Just out of genuine curiosity, what is it about horror films in general that you're looking to avoid? Is it just the violence? I'm a pretty big fan of the Alien franchise, I'm not sure it has many controversial under or overtones (except maybe the general violence in it.)

I have limits based on moral content as you do. I wanted to see if that's how people would frame their reply - in moral terms. There are other ways to do it.

FYI, I distinguish between "thriller" and "horror". I like the first and dislike the second. By my definition a thriller creates fear through expectations and horror through graphic display. So, for example, there is a horribly gruesome crime in Rear Window, but the viewer never sees a single drop of blood, nor really any violence either. That film displays masterful creativity. In contrast, with a film like Friday the 13th, you might as well pluck a chicken at your kitchen table as watch that movie.

Yeah I know I LOVE the Alien franchise as do my sis and dad who I've very close to so giving it up would be hard. Horror films glorify evil things I would say ... even though nearly everything does. Honestly I don't get scared watching horror movies except for very view. For example Drag Me To Hell and The Human Centipede REALLY scared me. So those kinds of movies are a definite no. Violence is a no for me 100%. I couldn't even watch Logan it was way to violent and too much cursing for no reason. I usually love Marvel movies. Same reason I don't like Deadpool. As a general thumb if the movie is rated R I would probably go to christian movie review website to see if I should watch it

I agree! I really was a movie fanatic before I really started reading the Bible. I really appreciate good movies. I do enjoy thrillers. For me Unbreakable and Split were amazing movies! and I'm really good at working out the plots. I also love the movie The Shining, Signs, you know originals? I will check out rear window

So yes I would use moral discretion. If you've seen the movie Signs (must see) apparently crop circles are created by strong witchcraft spells. So that kinda thing freaks me out and makes me more reserved in a way

Do you have a criteria that determines what films you will watch? e.g.
* I won't watch films that have ___ because ___
* I only watch films directed by ___ because ___
* I only watch films about ___ because ___

I usually have an interest in movies that either make me think :smarty:or have flashy action sequences :zoro:; hopefully both criteria are synthesized together in one movie for my amusement . :lost:

I do have criteria -- must be free from inappropriate contentographic elements, free from leftist ideas, and free from coarse language preferred.
I don't watch much movies, as I think movies are short and expensive. Are they not short - only 1.5 hrs on average? 1.5 hrs is just too short for a good story to develop.

I usually watch dramas + stories Tv series , mostly from UK and Asia. Not documentaries or news commentary as they usually have leftist bias (esp BBC).

I like movies that uphold the good. They don't necessarily need to be Christian, but good story telling with compelling characters that don't rely on special effects to hold your interest are my favorites. I don't like the current trend of making the heroes such bad people. I get that heroes aren't perfect (and they're pretty one-dimensional when they have no flaws), but movies seem to be glorifying the "edgy" side of their heroes rather than having flaws that just make them more human. I stay away from gratuitious sex and violence, but don't necessarily refuse to see a movie based on a specific set of criteria. I would really like to see Christian film makers improve in their craft. There are a few good ones . . . but for the most part, they seem a little cheesy.

I agree.

I also agree with this, and it's become a hobby of mine. I've spent some time trying to understand why faith movies often end up being "cheesy".
